For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

I'm not mourning the Queen at all. It's sad she has died for her family but I'm not grieving.
I'm not being disrespectful but I'm not going to take part in any part of the national mourning.

It's funny how some posters who think not taking part in the mourning think that coming on Mumsnet and telling other people off (often being snarky and pompous with it) don't think that that's disrespectful.

ShatParp · 13/09/2022 17:01

Well I for one appreciate your thread OP! Following for ideas. Young kids don't want to sit through hours of coverage, nor will they remember it, so mine will watch the Newsround coverage so it's age appropriate, and we will take them out in some beautiful countryside and feel grateful for life in general!
(Our local soft play centre is open and I don't judge them one bit. Each to their own!)

Becknutmeg · 13/09/2022 17:01

@LetMeSpeak bit odd that you are so shocked and offended that some people won’t be watching the funeral. Why on earth would I want to watch this? Head of state by “divine right” isn’t really somthing I want my children to aspire to (not like they could anyway 😂)

We’re hoping to take DD for a lovely cycle! Looking forward to it!

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

Because this is a real conversation that will actually happen 😆

DogInATent · 13/09/2022 16:58

It’s not just any Monarch is it? It’s the longest reigning monarch and will most likely be the last female monarch any of our children will see.
Closed casket. Unless something goes really badly wrong, they won't be seeing her. Probably not a bad thing. After a week and a half it's going to be a bit 'fresh'.

Are you being deliberately thick? Please tell me you are.

AclowncalledAlice · 13/09/2022 17:02

If your DC are old enough, why not just have a "movie day" with popcorn, hot dogs and anything people usually have when going to the cinema.

I've never once thought about asking what my parents were doing when the queen was crowned, or for her father's funeral. I can't imagine any potential grandchildren giving a single stuff what I did for her funeral.

Soubriquet · 13/09/2022 17:03

It frustrates me that so much is closed. Not that I can go anywhere anyway.

womaninatightspot · 13/09/2022 17:03

Paddle boarding at the loch with a picnic and a flask as Inexpect local cafe to be closed.

Wonnle · 13/09/2022 17:03

I'm getting the feeling that most of you on here believe it's compulsory to watch this ruddy funeral

I for one will have nothing whatsoever to do with it in any shape or form .

1994girl · 13/09/2022 17:03

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:32

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

It's sad news about the Queen but some of us don't have an interest in watching it.

You think it won’t! Wow. It is incredibly disappointing to me how little people care about history and how it shapes the world we live in today. How little parents value sharing our history with their children. We have such a huge wealth of historical places to visit and so much to learn, yet people just arnt bothered. So disappointing.

Are you being a bit preachy and clutching at your Charles and Diana commemorative pearls? You don't need to tell me you are.

I think once they make the decision to close schools everything else has to follow as so many workers have children

1994girl · 13/09/2022 17:05

NovaDeltas · 13/09/2022 15:41

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

Nope

Daydreambeliever1175 · 13/09/2022 17:06

Looks like the parks will be busier than ever. That's assuming the parks are open!

LilacPoppy · 13/09/2022 17:06

@NovaDeltas my dc ages 7-17 are very interested in watching the funeral. Because A for the most part they have respect for others. And B it's history.
I feel for young children who won't get the opportunity to watch. I would be annoyed as an adult if that opportunity was denied me.

DrBlackbird · 13/09/2022 17:06

Depending on your kid’s ages, your local climbing centre is likely to be open. It’s a great mind and body sport.

Soubriquet · 13/09/2022 17:07

My two kids don’t give two figs about the funeral.

So we will probably watch some Pokémon and have snacks

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 17:08

Those country footpaths will be busy, just like Covid times

DrBlackbird · 13/09/2022 17:09

You mentioned London

londonclimbingcentres.co.uk/about-us/

Call and see if one of these walls are open. Kids love to climb! My DD started age 4…

Yes, Covid flashbacks are exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

OP posts:
Xmasbaby11 · 13/09/2022 17:09

My dd are 8 and 10. I think I'll have the funeral on and watch some of it with them if they're interested. Probably a walk and a roast dinner too.

I'm not a royalist but it's part of history so I feel grateful it's a bank hol and our family will all be off. I feel for people whose lives will be affected by the surprise bh or small businesses losing income.

Chaotica · 13/09/2022 17:10

Ohahjustalittlebit · 13/09/2022 15:38

Ireland is open.

Haha. That is where my parents took us when Charles married Diana.

DogInATent · 13/09/2022 17:10

I feel for young children who won't get the opportunity to watch
iPlayer. It will be on iPlayer and they can watch it when they like.

Those that think it's some special live tv moment are probably the same sort of people that watch their kids growing up on the back of a phone screen.
