For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

It's personal choice. People will have their own reasons for watching it, and others will have their own reasons for deciding not to.

Everyone has their own set of personal circumstances and reasons for doing things the way they choose to.

Personally I wouldn't judge anyone. We are all different.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/09/2022 16:43

How dare your children not want to watch hours upon hours of dreary funeral coverage!

Setyoufree · 13/09/2022 16:43

@NovaDeltas where are you off to? Can I come?! I don't recognise this country anymore...

Do your kids not want to watch? Hmm..the beach?

I'm 99.99% sure my teenager isn't going to sit and watch the Queen's funeral.

5128gap · 13/09/2022 16:43

Perhaps someone should issue us with a list of 'necessary' reasons to leave our TV on Monday as oppose to 'disrespectful' ones?
A bit like we used to be told what was 'essential' during covid and what was 'selfish'.
I'm willing to bet its the same people who compile both lists.

DashboardConfessional · 13/09/2022 16:44

Tough isn't it? DS is 3 and won't sit through a Disney film, let alone a funeral. We may go to Shearwater with his bike.

Hoolihan · 13/09/2022 16:45

We are having friends over for a tea party/booze up. My kids are 10 & 14 and couldn't be less interested in watching the funeral.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/09/2022 16:47

Some absolute royalist nutters in this thread.

pinok · 13/09/2022 16:47

McDonald’s is open.

Bratnews · 13/09/2022 16:48

I've just checked my gym is open!! I have booked a class. The whole you must mourn is just weird, plus I really can't stand the whole Long Live the King etc. No one should be elevated just through birth.

YouHaveAnArse · 13/09/2022 16:48

A lot of households don't have broadcast TV now, or TV licenses to watch live coverage. What are they meant to do, just stare at the wall all day because fun is cancelled?

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

I didn't watch her when she was alive, I not such a hypocrite to watch her funeral.

WarmChocolateFudgeCake · 13/09/2022 16:52

I've been looking for things to do too, theme parks etc will be closed which is a shame I was hoping we'd get a nice quiet day in alton towers! I think we will probably drive to somewhere scenic and do a hike, there's some lovely waterfalls less than an hour from us. I don't think much will be open, wherever you go make sure you take a picnic.

Respectfully, you do not get to dictate to people whether or not they watch this funeral. People have had their own parent's funerals cancelled and have lost important medical appointments because of it. Have some empathy.

DogInATent · 13/09/2022 16:55

Go to the beach, build a sandcastle
It's what she'd have wanted.

shrunkenhead · 13/09/2022 16:56

I'll be working as I'm Self- employed - no work = no pay. Dp works in health care so has to work. I might record the funeral and watch the highlights when I get home

LampLighter414 · 13/09/2022 16:57

Doesn’t seem to be many answers to OPs question.

I’ve had a look and my local cinema is shut. I imagine vast majority of pubs and restaurants will be.

I think sadly most businesses know they will social media abuse and indeed even physical violence or criminal damage by the poppy fascist types if they decide to stay open.

Chooksnroses · 13/09/2022 16:57

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:43

The head of state is dead ffs! Sorry if it’s an inconvenience to you but can’t you have a bit of respect for the occasion. Everything is shut for a reason. Nothing to do with “guilt” but respect, something that is clearly lacking here.

I agree with your reply.

Suncreamqueen · 13/09/2022 16:57

We have diy planned & hopefully some de cluttering. I’m fairly interested so would have the funeral on in the background.

my kids do better if we’ve been out somewhere so might find a park open somewhere

NCFT0922 · 13/09/2022 16:58

I’ll be in hospital having an operation so I won’t be watching. I hope that’s not too disrespectful for people.

DogInATent · 13/09/2022 16:58

It’s not just any Monarch is it? It’s the longest reigning monarch and will most likely be the last female monarch any of our children will see.
Closed casket. Unless something goes really badly wrong, they won't be seeing her. Probably not a bad thing. After a week and a half it's going to be a bit 'fresh'.

Are you joking? After going through lockdown…..?

we’re watching and wil be going out after for sure

Because OPs hatred for the Queen is much stronger than allowing her children to learn. Allowing them to take such a good opportunity like this to watch history take place in real time.

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

NewYorkLassie · 13/09/2022 17:00

I think young kids understand a lot more about the queen and the royal family this year because of all the focus on the Platinum Jubilee. My 6 year old will be interested to see what’s going on. They went to the Tower of London last year and they’re pretty interested in history generally at the moment.

I don’t think anyone should feel morally obligated to watch the funeral. But I do think it’s a bit odd to be making a big fun day out of an extra day off due to someone dying. We’ll have a mainly quiet day at home. Probably pop to the local park for a walk at some stage in the afternoon.

MissMaple82 · 13/09/2022 15:47

Why would you not want to involve your kids in this moment of history???? I find that odd, all schools will be talking about it, watch it with your children !
