For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

It's getting a bit much now. I don't know anyone personally who's this upset about the queen dying or remotely interested in the royal family. It's sad she's died but it's becoming morbid now. OP I'll be using the day to probably make a full English and letting the kids have a messy play day as it's due to be raining. If it wasn't I'd of taken them down to the ball pit or out for lunch.
I'm sorry to people who are interested in all of this but I'm not and I'm not going to force it on my kids either. They haven't asked about the queen and I certainly don't think they'd choose to watch someone's funeral.
🤦🏽‍♀️

I’ll be spending the day with my family out and about. No interest in the funeral.

Yes I’m a Republican.

Its interesting that when a republic is mentioned we get shot down with examples of dictatorships and yet, royalists seem to revel in the idea of compulsory mourning.

Just like in N Korea you’ll all keep mourning because everyone is too afraid to be the first one to stop.

The psychology behind the mass pressure to conform is utterly fascinating.

RaininSummer · 13/09/2022 19:27

I find it extremist to be devestated to be honest. I don't know anyone like that. I have no real idea how my friends and colleagues might vote but I am definitely not a Corbyn supporter.

nokitchen · 13/09/2022 19:27

@WhenISnappedAndFarted Me too. I'm avoiding all of the tv coverage. Death is a bit too recent in our family.

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

I'm almost 70 and I won't be watching, DH is 75 and he's frothing at the mouth about how much it has been on. I'm not sure if I'm more fed up with the coverage or his moaning.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/09/2022 19:29

Jesus. There are some proper spinning-eyed loonies on here!

I will be at home, alone. DP will be at work. I don't know how to switch the TV on, and have precisely no interest in watching the funeral. I'm going to buy a new book over the weekend and some nice lunch/cake and just have a relaxing day.

You don’t know how to ..turn the TV on? What?

It's true. Wouldn't have one in the house if it was up to me, so I've never bothered learning how to use it.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/09/2022 19:38

My 24yo DD lives in London (we are Scottish). She and her friends plan to go into the centre on Monday to be part of what is happening and to watch the funeral on a screen somewhere. I think more young people than you might imagine are interested in the funeral.

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 19:38

I'm glad we chose this time to do the decorating.

Many people have no interest in the TV and prefer a Radio or a newspaper or neither... yet again you seek to tell others what to do.

I agree with this. She will in the history books be - The Queen, the longest reigning monarch who ascended to the throne after the abdication of George. During her reign, x number of ex-colonies removed her as the Head of State.

That is literally it.

Well to be accurate she ascended the throne after her father died. It wasn't George who abdicated it was Edward.

She did oversee the growth of the Commonwealth, it was only 8 members when she became queen, I think it is 50 something now. She served int he ATS in WWII. So I think she did somethings.

Elfen · 13/09/2022 19:44

I was wondering who these people might be who are interested or bothered about things that happen in the royal family (other than the friends and family if the deceased, of course). I don't know anyone who's been watching or reading the news about it other than the initial headlines.
It would be interesting to see research/statistics into what kind of people do believe in monarchy as a system or do follow the royal soap dramas. Wonder whether class and/or education levels are a factor.

That aside, we live near royal parks so can't really pop out to parks for the day and hope to avoid it. :(

I hate the radio too. I don't know how to turn that on either! Grin

Dagnabit · 13/09/2022 19:45

Some people are way over invested in this event! I’ll enjoy a lie and probably not do much on the day - none of us are particularly interested in watching it but I’ll see the highlights on the news. Very little open so won’t bother going out but think dd is meeting up with some friends.

CaptainSamCarter · 13/09/2022 19:46

Haha some of these comments are hilarious. Fancy being that caught up in the royal family that you believe everyone should be glued to their TVs on Monday without exception. Bonkers! It's sad that she's died and she served the country well, but no, I won't be forcing my kids to sit through hours of TV they have no interest in.

We're planning a walk but we live in the Lake District so have lots of options for interesting hikes. We'll take a picnic and the kids can paddle in the water. They would much prefer that than sit around all day watching a bunch of politicians pretend to be sad.

Plus, judging by the amount of swivel eyed nutters on here, it should be quiet and we won't have any issue with parking!

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 13/09/2022 19:46

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:32

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

Why on earth do you get to dictate what people should be doing? Get lost

neverbeenskiing · 13/09/2022 19:46

it is a day of significant cultural significance

Did anyone else read this in Pam from Gavin and Stacey's voice?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 13/09/2022 19:47

I will be having a nice breakfast with my friend and have a catch up, Hate the RF anyway

Agadoodoododont · 13/09/2022 19:49

I’ve not spoken to one person irl who wants to watch the funeral of a person they’ve never met, attended by people they’ll never meet. It’s a bit like just gatecrashing a random funeral.
To her family it’s a sad loss—- but it’s theirs, not mine. The Queen gets replaced by another, slightly odder, person who’ll wear a crown and clothes that seem to come from a bottomless dressing up box.
Im thinking of gardening or a bit of diy. One DD is taking children to the beach, not sure what other is doing.

Hastingsontheup · 13/09/2022 19:50

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 17:00

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

Well my DM (aged 73) watched the coronation aged 3 or 4. All she could tell me was a memory of being very bored, glad I got to share that then. Be realistic no child younger than 7 or 8 will have the patience to sit through it nor any interest in it.

GeorgeorRuth · 13/09/2022 19:53

We will be on a caravan site. So a day of TV in the van and dog walks. I'll stock up on Gin over the weekend. I'm sure her majesty would approve of me sinking a few in her honour.

teenagetantrums · 13/09/2022 19:54

Well I want to watch the funeral. I have swapped day off for work. My DS lives in London and him and his friends are going to funeral Once in a lifetime event for most off us. I think each to thier own. If you are not interested have a day not watching the television.

Everyone I know who is interested in this is middle class and degree educated if that helps with your stats.
