For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

Get a grip! There’s no way I’ll be watching it or expecting my child to. It’s just weird and unnecessary!

Shortkiwi · 13/09/2022 18:58

Loads of people will choose not to watch the funeral and don’t support paying for a family to live a very privileged life. Most people didn’t know the Queen personally. The TV and radio coverage has been total overkill. I can’t understand people revelling in the drama and jumping on the bandwagon of grief. Lots of my friends feel the same. She was 96. I do acknowledge that she had no choice in in terms of being born into the Royal family and she certainly fulfilled her duties. My parents are in their nineties and I’ll have appropriate grief when they die as I’ve known and loved them intimately for all my life.

Heresme33 · 13/09/2022 18:58

Day at the beach take some food and a flask of tea sit and enjoy the peace and quiet what I'm planning to do anyway.

Chipsahoy · 13/09/2022 18:59

We don’t have live tv because I’m not paying the BBC any money. So we won’t be watching live. Or at all. I’m not anti royal. But I’m not pro it either. We will probably have a day at the beach if the weather is good. 😊

MissMaple82 · 13/09/2022 15:47

Why would you not want to involve your kids in this moment of history???? I find that odd, all schools will be talking about it, watch it with your children !

Because it’s a funeral and who would want a child to have to watch that? A funeral for a stranger which is even worse!

Kissingfrogs25 · 13/09/2022 19:00

I have no idea who these republicans are - Corbyn supporters I suppose. I know absolutely no one that feels like the people here on MN. So spiteful with it. Everyone we know range from sad to devastated she has died, and everyone thought she was a marvellous lady and Queen.
I feel sad for the people that can't appreciate her work or her life, but it is their choice.

Ever heard of the phrase 'birds of a feather flock together'

So I can quite believe the only people you know IRL also have reacted the same way you have re the death of the queen

As you tend to associate with peers that share the same values

Also age will be a factor (no offence)

Superbabe64 · 13/09/2022 19:02

@mourningafter
Take them to Bushy Park to see the deer and the all the wildlife. I love that park. Take a picnic if the weather's dry. I will be passing through on my bike on the way to Richmond 😉

It’s coming across as very extremist to me too. I don’t understand the bitterness in them.

How ridiculous (and I have nothing against the Royal Family). Why should everyone and their children be compelled to watch the funeral on TV? I don't even have a TV, so I'll not be watching it.

Kids don't give a crap about royals and they won't give a crap in 30 years. Honestly, it's not 1920 anymore. And it'll be even more common to hate the royals by then.

Dear oh dear. It’s not about love or hate. Really missing the point.

BaileySharp · 13/09/2022 19:06

My 3 year old won't want to watch so hoping we figure out something to do to keep her entertained

In other words…I want to spend my extra day off however I choose but at the same I expect things to be open (which requires other people to go to work and lose their day off) for my benefit.

How nice of you.

TwoCoffeesPlease · 13/09/2022 19:08

Some friends have invited us round for a BBQ so we will be doing that and getting day drunk as bank holidays are for!

exactly.
The words ‘bonus day off’ is awful.
Making me feel even more depressed.
I detest people sometimes.

crosbystillsandmash · 13/09/2022 19:12

@LetMeSpeak

I'm not at all bitter. Just very angry at the huge amount of money that is being wasted.

I visited a family today ( 2 working parents, just to silence the truly ignorant ) who can barely afford to keep a roof over their head. They are utterly terrified about the coming winter.

So yes, I'm desperate to see the end of the monarchy and have zero interest in the death of a stranger who hunted animals for fun and covered up for her sex offender son.

SeagullSausage · 13/09/2022 19:12

Well, you either see it as a curse rather than a blessing (as I would really as kids can't go to school bit DH still has to go to work so I'm left parenting 3 kids without usual support or distractions)

Or you see it as a blessing and make the best of it - surprise extra time off to spend with the kids outdoors.

What's your issue? How should people who don't share your world view term it acceptably for you?

ConfusedDottComm · 13/09/2022 19:14

Legolands closed. Looked earlier

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/09/2022 19:15

It's absolutely unbelievable to me the way some people on this thread are frothing at the mouth because others don't want to watch a Royal event on the telly. We have choice and free will in this country, thank god.

A lot of young people haven't really got a clue who the various members of the royal family are, and what they are for, they cannot relate to them at all, they have kept themselves at such a distance from the plebs. The Palace machine has completely failed in this respect over the last 40 years, all their PR has been about keeping nasty stories out of the papers, keeping the status quo and preserving senior members of the royal family almost as mythical creatures and far too important to have to justify their positions. Times have changed since the class system of the 50s when the queen came to the throne, the idea of deference is outmoded. The palace should have spent recent years actively convincing people that a modern royal family is still needed in the modern age and SHOWING the public more of what they actually DO. In most people's minds they are for turning up to places, shaking hands, cutting a ribbon and making a speech, with a bit of waving from balconies, signing documents and hosting dinners. It simply isn't enough to justify their existence, young people need convincing as to why we NEED them, and fast. I think William and Harry could have been the ones to do that, it was the right time to really show the positive things a monarchy brings, but it all went tits up.

Personally I think that if the queen had thought the job was that important she stood have stepped down at the point she could no longer carry out all the activities expected of the role. But let's face it she LIKED being queen, apparently she has more or less said to herself. And what we have left is someone approaching their 80s, so now we won't even have a generation growing up with the same monarch for many years, which has largely prompted the support for the queen from the older generation. We will have a king who is at an age where his physical health is no doubt already declining - how long will HE be able to function properly in the role and be a visible and active presence in society? What exactly will he be doing to "serve" us?

Many many people think along these lines. Even those who have an interest in history rather than being a royalist as such, I'm not sure why it would be essential for them to watch a funeral rather than a coronation in order for them to witness the transition from one monarch to another.

Have you tried socialising outside the WI and the local Con club?

Am corpsing at the idea that anyone who doesn't want to kowtow to a bunch of inbred parasitcal dimwits must be a Corbyn supporter. That guy really does live rent-free in your tiny Tory heads. Grin

Which parts would you like me to celebrate?
The obscene wealth? The hunting?
The hideous cover up of the sex offender son?

Your post sounds odd. You almost sound brain washed by the daily mail 😳

Well, the great thing about living in a democracy is that you can do what you want.

OP, no one cares what you do next Monday. Why seek out attention by posting such a comment on Mumsnet?

Is that right? Not much of a democracy if funerals are being cancelled next Monday that were already planned before the Queen died. Poor show.
