For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

Well I want to watch the funeral. I have swapped day off for work. My DS lives in London and him and his friends are going to funeral Once in a lifetime event for most off us. I think each to thier own. If you are not interested have a day not watching the television.

Yes, that's sort of the point - but some people here seem to think they can inflict compulsory TV watching on people.

I've recently had a family bereavement, and I don't think I can cope with watching the funeral so I will be going out for a long walk I think.

I understand it's history etc but it's not something I want to watch right now so will be doing something else.

Me too . Lost Dd (19) so totally understand. A funeral is too raw for me . Sending you hugs x

constantsky · 13/09/2022 19:59

No, you have to sit them in front of the telly with their eyes wide open Clockwork Orange style and force them to watch an old lady they never met be interred

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:53

Because OPs hatred for the Queen is much stronger than allowing her children to learn. Allowing them to take such a good opportunity like this to watch history take place in real time.

Wind your neck in troll

@Pebblebeach15 I am so terribly sorry for your loss.

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

Raising a toast to Oliver Cromwell, is what I shall be doing.

I don’t understand all this enforced mourning 🤷‍♀️. If you want to watch it that’s fine but everyone is entitled to their own choices so those who don’t want to shouldn’t be made to feel guilty about not watching it !!
We do still live in a democracy don’t we !!

The part about the democracy is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Day at the beach take some food and a flask of tea sit and enjoy the peace and quiet what I'm planning to do anyway.

By the sounds of it you'd better get there early to get a good spot - it may be just as packed as the streets of London 😄

neverbeenskiing · 13/09/2022 20:09

This thread is completely and utterly insane.

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

Doesn't the fact that so many posters thought you were joking tell you something? Thanks for the recommendation, but no. I'm not a Royalist. I have no interest in spending the day watching the funeral of a complete stranger. We'll probably go for a long walk in the morning, then we've got friends and their DC coming over for lunch and then if the weather is nice the kids can play in the garden, if not we'll play board games or something.

’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’

Have you ever actually met a child?

"Oh Grandmama, do tell us again about the time you spent 6 hours watching a televised church service, please!"

I have bought myself a new pair of black pyjamas

You win the thread.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 13/09/2022 20:10

I was thinking the usual bank holiday things would be open. Looks like a picnic and walk it is.

And no, even, if a lockdown were imposed there's no way I'd be choosing to watch a stranger's funeral on telly. Willing to bet those demanding respect alla DailyFail will actually just spend the day gossiping about wore what

onlythreenow · 13/09/2022 20:13

So you expect other people to work so you and your family can enjoy a "bonus day off" Hmm

constantsky · 13/09/2022 19:59

And who cares if they find it boring and complain constantly?

Pebblebeach15 · 13/09/2022 20:17

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Thank you x

GreenClock · 13/09/2022 20:18

I’m so sorry for all those on this thread who’ve lost someone this year.

A few independent businesses near me are opening, cafes and pubs etc. The supermarkets all jumped like lemmings when Aldi announced it was closing.

neverbeenskiing · 13/09/2022 19:46

it is a day of significant cultural significance

Did anyone else read this in Pam from Gavin and Stacey's voice?

And if my little prince wants to watch the funeral here in Billericay, you will say nothing Michael, alright?😂

tigger1001 · 13/09/2022 20:20

"Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’"

My grandmother was born in 1912. There has been 4 monarchs in her lifetime. Two died (my grandmother passed in 2006) and one abdicated. She never talked about the funerals or the coronations just the abdication.

I used to work bank holidays out of choice because I got double time and saved a day's holiday for another time

Thenightwemet16 · 13/09/2022 20:24

NovaDeltas · 13/09/2022 15:41

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

This! 🤣 at the thought of my 4 and 6 year olds being interested for more than two minutes.

User1435 · 13/09/2022 20:25

He would have hated that! You should probably plough a field or something in his honour! ;)

antelopevalley · 13/09/2022 20:25

To be honest what is there to say about a funeral you watch on TV to people in the distant future?
There was a large procession and lots of people. A nice service. Unless something shocking happens, then there really is nothing to say.

Exactly. And let's be honest it will be replayed so often that those of us working will be unlikely to completely avoid it and will see bits of it on the news etc for weeks.

FourChimneys · 13/09/2022 20:28

My DC are adults and no doubt have interesting plans for the day. I doubt if the funeral will cross their minds, or that of their partners.

As part of bringing them up, we talked about the RF, how wrong it is to be head of state by accident of birth, the tax dodging, the lack of FOI, etc. More recently how the queen has been supporting a sex offender in her family. The disdain shown by Charles for ordinary people, the racism of Philip. We never taught them to revere and tug their forelocks.

Thenightwemet16 · 13/09/2022 20:24

This! 🤣 at the thought of my 4 and 6 year olds being interested for more than two minutes.

I should add before I get piled on for not showing respect, I would love to watch it and would love nothing more than my two DC being interested, but them sitting watching adults in dreary clothes sitting for two hours is not going to happen. Despite me having already explained what a massive event in history it is. 🤷‍♀️

pompomdaisy · 13/09/2022 20:30

This bloke will probably keep things open!

What is open on Monday 19th Sept?
