For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

Not a chance will I be watching a stranger's funeral especially when the only reason it seen as special is because she happened to be born into a certain family.

I find it really weird that they are broadcasting it on big screens in city centres, like they would a football match.

As someone else said, I didn't ask for a day off but I'm not squandering it in front of a TV watching something I have no interest in and don't understand.

Teenprobs · 13/09/2022 18:35

I'm planning on watching it when my 18 month old has gone to bed. I'm questioning whether local parks will be open.

This isn't a bank holiday. It's not a 'day off' and for some it isn't an extra day off they are just being forced to work on their normal day off.

The majority of the country will want to pay their respects. But I think people should choose how and when.

Oh I don't know. She did a lot of "good" work getting certain suspected criminals off the hook.

I agree. But unless the Royal Family decides it has to follow the law and there is a major cultural change, then this will be unremarkable. Just business as usual. .

Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. The Tony Soprano of Buck House.

I'll be spending the morning at our local oncology unit. My appt hasn't been cancelled. Thanks you, brilliant NHS 😊

My local midwives have cancelled their appointments.

RaininSummer · 13/09/2022 18:37

It's the first day of my annual leave. A whole 5 days off so I am not spending a day of it in front of the TV watching a funeral.

Dguu6u · 13/09/2022 18:37

I was supposed to go to the dentist that day, that would have been more fun than being forced to watch the funeral...

I'm afraid it'll be parks, playgrounds or the beach. Don't forget to buy food for a picnic the day before because apparently all the supermarkets will be closed too.

Elderemo · 13/09/2022 18:38

I'll be working, all Stonegate pubs are opening early to maximise profits... I mean to make sure the community can come together and watch 🙄

stillherenow · 13/09/2022 18:38

I'm using the occasion to teach my child the travesty of living in a monarchy, discuss philosophical questions of equality, democracy, freedoms, issues of nationalism and class.

Also the horrific and shocking hypocrisy of closing the country for someone's death while parents whose child dies are allowed two days off work (according to government guidelines) and people are required to accept a diagnosis of a mental illness in order to be allowed benefits to survive after bereavements if they don't have an inheritance to live on.

I had hoped to fit a seaside holiday in but it looks like the trains might be difficult.

I'm very proud of my dd and her absolute outrage at all of this ! Questioning the status quo - exactly what I hoped she would do

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:32

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

You are ridiculous. Do you know what I should be doing on Monday? Going to an oncologist appointment which will now be rearranged. My husband who is a cancer surgeon has his operating list cancelled as they cannot staff the theatre.
Why is the country coming to a standstill at the detriment of so many. I feel for her family, its tough when anyone dies. But I am not mourning someone I've never met and to be blunt, has not impacted my life. If I die at 96 in one of my many mansions, most of those years incredibly healthy I'll be thrilled. This should not be a time for mourning.
So on Monday I'll be doing anything but watch

Oh I don't know. She did a lot of "good" work getting certain suspected criminals off the hook.

Don't forget the bit where Johnson illegally prorogued Parliament and there was chuff all shecould do about it. That's got to be worth a chapter.

Lovemusic33 · 13/09/2022 18:41

Plenty of places you can go with kids that don’t require payment, take them to a park, to the woods or local nature reserve, the beach or for a picnic. It will be similar to Christmas Day/Easter Sunday where most things will be closed.

I will probably go out and watch the highlights in the news later, no doubt it will played over and over again in tv for the next month.

Who was it who was saying the RF treat their staff well?www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/13/king-charles-staff-given-redundancy-notice-during-church-service-for-queen

Mm tasty tasty boots.

By the way, plenty of people don't give two hoots about the imaginary friends in the newspapers.

😂

kagerou · 13/09/2022 18:46

My little one is just 1 year old so hopefully some softplay will be open as that'd our standard BH go to!

If not we are lucky enough to be by the beach or plenty of nice parks

typingcake · 13/09/2022 18:49

My sons nursery is open! And he is going in!!
my husbands workplace is closed as Charles is patron!! I don’t work on Mondays anyway. So me and my husband have the day off together CHILD FREE for the first time in about 18 months!

SeagullSausage · 13/09/2022 18:49

I am absolutely dreading Monday.

I'm not into the RF and have all sorts of issues with the institution. I am, of course, sad for her family, and respectful of the historic significance of her death. But I can show the children the excerpts in a newsrooms episode or something. We do not need to stay home all day watching endless footage of not v much.

Having recently experienced the agonising, painful and traumatic death from cancer of a parent, I am not coping well with the insistence that I dwell on death and bereavement without any relief.

DH is working on Monday, so I will be lone parenting and I have absolutely no intention of making any harder than it needs to be

We will head out with bikes and dog and a picnic and duck food and try to make the absolute best of an enforced day of shut down.

Those who think this is somehow scandalous or disrespectful need to relook at their definitions and the general state of the world. Have a bit of generosity for those who will be sad and lonely and find the day hard.

Fizbosshoes · 13/09/2022 18:50

I will probably watch, I don't anticipate my DC (12 and 16) will be especially interested.
3 out of 4 of their own grandparents have died and that has had a greater impact on their day to day life than The Queen dying. They attended 2 of the funerals for their own grandparents and behaved in an appropriate and respectful way. If I suggest they watch and they say no thanks, I won't consider it disrespectful.
I imagine there will be a report about it on the news and, if they later changed their mind and wanted to see the whole thing, it will probably be available on iplayer.

crosbystillsandmash · 13/09/2022 18:51

@stillherenow
Here here!!

My teenage dc are raging as much as me about this whole ridiculous debacle!!
We must keep sane/good company because the vast majority of my family/friends/colleagues feel the same.

mrsDracoMalfoy · 13/09/2022 18:52

I'm under 40, I'd like to watch it, so would my 16 year old.
However the company I work for (retail) will no doubt still be open. The only shop in town. 😒

Eeksteek · 13/09/2022 18:54

I’m thinking of it like any other BH where the weather is likely to be questionable and we don’t go out because everywhere is ludicrously busy. Lazy morning, long dog walk, roast dinner, proper pudding, new board game by the fire for DD, maybe a movie if she can find something we both like (v. Unlikely) a hot bath and a G and T if I can find it in the budget this week. I’d have the funeral on, but a) the coverage is going to go on like Ariston, and b) I don’t have a TV licence, so I’m not allowed to watch live. I would, probably, but I’m not going to buy one for one day. I fear the radio will not do it justice. (I have no intention of breaching the licensing laws, but have been vaguely wondering if they will let people off because it’s The Queen’s funeral, or consider it a prime hunting ground for cheaters!)

If DD is at all interested, or the weather is awesome, we’ll go to mum’s and pick some apples, then watch it at hers and have campfire and some outside games, But I doubt she’s remotely bothered. Anyway, she has a tic toc attention span. I might get her into it by pretending to be queens for the day and baking the queen’s favourite dessert, making tiaras and having afternoon tea etc. I can usually sneak some facts in, then, but it depends if I have the energy to be a primary school teacher for the day.

Royalbloo · 13/09/2022 18:55

We are going on a massive long walk. I'm not making my 5yr old watch it.

DontKeepTheFaith · 13/09/2022 18:55

I will probably be watching the funeral as will DH, my teenage sons are less like to do so.

Im only off as of today now work have clarified we will be given an additional annual leave day, otherwise I would have worked.

I do have respect for the loss but am also going to make the most of the long weekend and will be going away for 2 nights coming back Sunday. Because I’m not working Monday we can make the most of our Sunday and return later in the day.

Nothing much will be open Monday.

Kissingfrogs25 · 13/09/2022 18:56

Ocado cancelled all deliveries. Loads of things you would expect to keep going are not. I think it is going to feel like Christmas Day in fact. All the shops are closing here.
