For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

nachoavocado · 13/09/2022 15:33

Do your kids not want to watch? Hmm..the beach?

Mindymomo · 13/09/2022 15:33

Our nearest National Trust is closed as is a local paying gardens with lake. We’ve decided to go for a meal Sunday evening and have a roast dinner on Monday. We will go for a long walk Monday, although we will watch some of the funeral.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 13/09/2022 15:35

We are going to B&Q in the weekend and DIY on Monday. Nothing is open. I don’t fancy going for walks because I would like to stop for a cake and coffee and lunch and I don’t even know if any pubs or cafes will be open.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 13/09/2022 15:36

I have already looked at national trust! I don’t support the royals so no way I will be spending my day watching the funeral.

Ohahjustalittlebit · 13/09/2022 15:38

Ireland is open.

inmyslippers · 13/09/2022 15:40

Hoping there will be some playcentres open. If not will head to the local park

NovaDeltas · 13/09/2022 15:40

Me and the kids are going hiking up some decent hills. If all the royal fans are at home, I'll have no trouble finding parking.

I can't work out if you're being sarcastic or not.

We're fortunate enough to live close to the river and local cycle path, so if all else fails and everything is shut, we will be out on the bikes.

It's bad enough everywhere is being guilt tripped into closing. I'm not being locked in my own house because of it as well!

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

And who made you the arbiter of how people spend their free time?

I'll be volunteering in a local charity kitchen as I do every Monday. Hungry people don't get less hungry because it's a Bank Holiday and I can't imagine the Queen would object in the slightest to charitable work continuing as usual.

Mm tasty tasty boots.

By the way, plenty of people don't give two hoots about the imaginary friends in the newspapers.

PushkaMcgee · 13/09/2022 15:42

Go on a cruise!! I'm working all day Monday checking in cruise passengers.

The head of state is dead ffs! Sorry if it’s an inconvenience to you but can’t you have a bit of respect for the occasion. Everything is shut for a reason. Nothing to do with “guilt” but respect, something that is clearly lacking here.

RobertaTheRobot · 13/09/2022 15:44

We will be going for a walk in the local Forrest, then I'll probably cook a roast dinner. I've looked up other things to do locally but like you I'm drawing a blank as everything is shut.

I'm anti monarchy so I won't be watching the funeral.

This must be a parody of royalist pomposity, right?

I work for myself from home so will be working all day as usual, but I'm meant to have a meeting in the pub that night. Are most pubs still opening (in the spirit of a wake at least) or having to close up, do we know?

Well what you are doing is a necessity. Spending leisure time with your kids isn’t.

Pixiedust1234 · 13/09/2022 15:46

Hopefully nothing is open except emergency health care. If you are off why can't others be off?. Go make a picnic or something.

AuntieMarys · 13/09/2022 15:47

I've got an hour with my PT at 10 and then I will be walking in the countryside. Dh has to work.

MissMaple82 · 13/09/2022 15:47

Why would you not want to involve your kids in this moment of history???? I find that odd, all schools will be talking about it, watch it with your children !

Tell that to the food banks that are closing for the day. Madness.

DappledThings · 13/09/2022 15:48

EH and NT are all closed. Looking at local country park, one with a massive playground but I suspect will be closed as well and they just haven't updated their website.

We were planning to find somewhere a bit out of our normal weekend days out but I think we are screwed.

Mind you DH doesn't have it confirmed yet if his workplace are treating as a normal BH. So kids can't go to school and I might end up having to just have another day solo entertaining at home. So yay.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 13/09/2022 15:49

I live in Shropshire so I'm going to drag my teenagers out on a walk around some local hills which they will hate!!

Your poor kids. The eyes of the World on the UK and you decide to…take them to a play park.

Like it or not the Queen was our Head of State and her death and funeral are historic events. Why would you not want your DC to learn about the country they live in?
