Center Parcs closing for funeral

Had the email to say Monday arrival delayed until Tuesday, can't get in until 4pm. 30% refund offered. From social media, it looks like people on a 7 night break are actually expected to leave at 10am on the Monday and not come back until Tuesday! People on a weekend break aren't being compensated for having to leave by 10am on the Monday.

AIBU to think wtf?!?!

This has the potential to backfire on them spectacularly.

Not among their staff.

Well, probably not some of their staff. But they probably also have staff who can't afford to miss the pay.

PolkaDotMankini · 13/09/2022 13:11

Expecting people to bugger off for a night and then come back is ridiculous.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

I imagine that not all their staff are actually going to get the whole day off. Cleaning staff for instance will be expected to be in to clean up after the guests who are being thrown out at 10:00.

I’d be interested to see just how many staff actually get the full day off, and whether they’re being paid for it, given that bank holidays will be written into all their contracts.

Well maybe they should think on how a luxury brand weathers a recession with bad press, piss poor customer service and lack of dependability?

Absolutely. What are they supposed to do if they've travelled miles in the middle of a week's holiday?

Remainiac · 13/09/2022 13:17

It’s because Monday is changeover day and they have 350 cleaners across the sites who won’t be at work.

PersonaNonGarter · 13/09/2022 13:18

Again, staff are harder to find than guests.

‘luxury brand’ Hmm

Summersdreaming · 13/09/2022 13:18

They are expecting people to leave the park mid holiday for 24 hours, am I understanding that right??

CenterParcs is not a luxury brand.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 13/09/2022 13:18

And for the people who are being asked to leave at 10 and who have activities booked for the day no compensation is being offered.

And ironically someone has copied in the tweet from butlins saying that they are reviewing their schedules to ensure anyone wanting to watch the funeral will be able to do so but that no-one’s holidays will be disrupted.

Maverickess · 13/09/2022 13:18

YABU.

Centre Parcs have staff. Staff that are difficult to recruit and retain. This time they have prioritised their staff over their guests. They are also being respectful.

Although I 100% agree with the need for respecting hospitality staff and that unfortunately, this is sadly lacking and getting worse, they really don't need to be closing completely and making people leave.
Skeleton staff and an area the staff can watch the funeral with refreshments laid on. Nothing onsite open, check out brought forward an hour and check in delayed possibly even until the next day (with appropriate refund) so only onsite guests remain and they are informed that nothing will be open, nothing will be done by the staff, baring absolute emergency, during the hours of the funeral, no room servicing, no just getting this or that.
That's what's happening where I work, guests have been informed, and yes there's been some arsey bastards about it but there's going to be arsey bastards whatever you do because some people just like to complain for the sake of it and to feel superior.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 13:19

Right, that's got me actively boycotting a business I'll never use and will continue that boycott indefinitely.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 13/09/2022 13:20

Again, staff are harder to find than guests. oh give over. Do you really think there would be a glut of resignations from businesses who haven’t closed for the queen’s funeral?

pinok · 13/09/2022 13:20

Even if they close facilities etc why can’t people already there stay in their lodges??

surely they can’t need many members of staff if everything else is closed

How do people who have travelled far manage with leaving midway through for a night?

ridiculous

fyn · 13/09/2022 13:21

I would assume it has a lot to do with their workers not being able to get childcare at short notice and therefore not being able to staff the resort safely.

Unforgettablefire · 13/09/2022 13:21

justaladyLOL · 13/09/2022 12:59

So one if the most historic events for years and you think people should miss out so you can play??
Really??
You many not want to watch but the vast majority do

"But yes, wtf indeed. Surely grown ups can make their own decisions about observing state funerals or not?"
Not if they are forced to work so your kids can play on a historic day

This.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 13/09/2022 13:21

I wonder if they could just have a skeleton staff in and keep everything shut but let people stay on site and bike ride, walk, self cater. If they paid double or triple time maybe I’m sure there’s a few staff who would manage to struggle through their grief to earn some extra pennies 🤨 a friend works for a security firm and there are shifts going for double time and people are clamouring for them, funny that isn’t it !

pinok · 13/09/2022 13:23

Lots of other places eg McDonald’s seem to be open as normal

Sensible response would be to just close all facilities for the day

Have a minimal number of staff on double time pay

A lot of people would happily come out of ‘mourning’ if double pay was involved

Freedomfighters · 13/09/2022 13:24

PersonaNonGarter · 13/09/2022 13:00

‘Centre Parcs’ are actually people you know. ‘They’ are made up of staff.
‘They’ will be in mourning/watching the state funeral.

So get over it. They totally made the right call. Finding staff is harder than finding guests.

They won't need staff without guests.

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 13:24

What are people meant to do though on their 7 day break? Where is a family meant to stay and sleep on Monday night?
I can understanding cancelling activities and resturants etc but people should be allowed in their lodges.

AntiHop · 13/09/2022 13:25

This is ridiculous

EndTheMonacyNow · 13/09/2022 13:25

That's ridiculous. I can understand limiting services but actually closing is crazy

35965a · 13/09/2022 13:25

That is batshit

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/09/2022 13:26

Making people leave for one night on Monday is ridiculous. If it was me, I'd just refuse to leave. What can they do??
