It's time for an Australian republic

It's hard to defend it rationally, really, but Queen Elizabeth always seemed better than some elected person, but King Charles doesn't. What do you think?

They don’t seem to massively want to be a republic from what I’ve seen. Few republicans as anywhere, but no big push for it. Forgive me if I’m wrong.

OldStager · 12/09/2022 23:45

There's a discussion on an Australian forum here you might be interested in: www.everybump.com.au/community/topic/7938-the-republic-question

Off with your head! 🤴

HeddaGarbled · 13/09/2022 00:11

I’ve seen more republican threads on here in the last 2 days than you can shake a stick at. It’s not wrong to have the discussions but do we really need to have one every fucking 5 minutes so fucking soon? Could you not have waited a week? You know that some people are upset. It’s so unkind.

CoolerThanIceCream · 13/09/2022 00:13

I couldn’t really care less.

Why single out Australia, out of interest?

Why not Canada, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Kenya, etc?

I’m from one of those countries, and so don’t have any real interest in what Australian citizens decide is best for them, in terms of their head of state.

They're probably Australian.

I'm not fussed personally. Neither staunchly for or against

Rapidtango · 13/09/2022 00:22

Do you have an Australian version of Mumsnet to which you could post your republican requirements? I'm not sure it will gain much traction on a predominantly UK site.

sausage767 · 13/09/2022 00:23

I’m happy to give Charles a go. Like many I know I’d rather time, energy and money be focused towards other issues.

RootinandTootin · 13/09/2022 00:25

what would you gain from being republican? I don’t really understand so genuine question. I don’t really mind the royals. Nothing they do really effects my life. Be weird seeing the money change and singing “god save the king” other than that nothing changes.

miked99 · 13/09/2022 00:25

I'm Australian and no one I know is particularly bothered one way or the other despite what shock-jocks on the radio try to stir up.
I'm sure that there are some people who care deeply about it being a symbol of oppression and others honouring heritage etc. But to my mind it's on a par with football teams having an official snack partner. It has a vanishingly small relevance to me.

RootinandTootin · 13/09/2022 00:25

Republic sorry

Keyansier · 13/09/2022 00:27

I can't stand the Australian accent. How they say "nice" as "noice" for example - it sounds so common to British ears - even when spoken from what is considered the posh Australians. There are so many hot guys out there but open their mouths and an Australian accent falls out and it's an instant turn off!

Hopeforall · 13/09/2022 00:28

Op presumably there’s nothing to stop you campaigning for a republic. Would there be a referendum or would the Australian government vote for it?

CuteCillian · 13/09/2022 00:33

You don't speak for my British ears, thank you. I love the Australian accent.

Well, that's good for you? Have another shrimp on the barbie in congratulations for disagreeing with what I said?

Ummm.. ok? And what is this got to do with anything at all? Hmm

Sparklybutold · 13/09/2022 00:45

I think Charlie boy is a pompous entitled twit. I'd abolish the lot of them tomorrow if I could and redistribute their wealth back into the country with a serious look at appropriate remuneration wherever possible.

??? Hmm Just saying I don't like the sound of the Australian accent, it's a valid, if maybe not a popular opinion, to have.

Keyansier · 13/09/2022 00:47

It's like ringing in my ears to me

Muststopeating · 13/09/2022 00:51

Let's keep the monarchy and abolish the government instead.

I'm damn sure the former give far more fucks about the state of the country thsn the latter.

And Cockney is sooo suave and sexy.

Back to the topic - I'm an Australian and a republican, always have been, but I don't think this is the appropriate time for a significant public debate about it. Happy for the government to stick to climate change, anti-corruption and cost f living crisis for now without being distracted. I'd like something done before the next King though.

At this time of day, MN isn't necessarily a predominantly U.K. site though.

You're right, people don't care much, but referendums are compulsory so ticking yes or no take the same amount of effort. I think that before it was I can't be bothered changing it. Now, it's changed anyway, and people will be more like, I can't be bothered having a king. But we'll see.

Here they've shut down parliament for 2 weeks. It seems unreasonable to me. Our lives have been disrupted so much with lockdown. Things are just getting back on track. I'm sorry the Queen has died, but lots of people have died. I don't want to hurt people's feelings though.

Also, an australian Republic has a different significance than a UK Republic. Less. I mean, Australia could hardly keep on with the monarchy if the UK doesn't, but the reverse would be OK.

Singapore, Kenya and India are already republics. So I'm guessing you're from Canada or New Zealand. Yes, you're in the same position I suppose.
