I don't want to be 'reigned over' anymore

While I totally respect the Queen and how she served the country, I think it's now a good time to end the monarchy as I think modern society has outgrown it.

Just the idea that someone inherits the job of head of state through birthright and reigns over us peasants is crazy in this modern age. Then all the ceremonies, titles, line of succession are remnants of a completely different era and tbh remind me of episodes of The Tudors or Game of Thrones, it's just so archaic and out of place.

I think having to bow and curtsey to people just because they were born or married into a special family also seems ridiculous. Why should I have to curtsey to any of them? Not saying I'd be rude or disrespectful but having to bend my knee to a set of people as if they were deities, it's just insane! I think I'd actually feel humiliated.

I also don't get the fawning and crying outside the palace - by all means be respectful and recognise her contribution but crying about someone you've never met? To me it's OTT

Back in medieval times when there was little education and religion was used to manipulate the masses, I can understand why all the peasants went mad for their sovereign and saw them as annointed by God etc etc but we're much more enlightened now (most of us!) so we need to make way for a new way of doing things.

Even a new national anthem - why is it all about the king or queen and god saving them? Why not about the people, the nation as a whole?

That said, I also hate the idea of someone like Boris Johnson being head of state and I bet that's a role he'd go for if we were a Republic. Swings and Roundabouts!

YABU - God save the king, monarchy forever
YANBU - time to end the monarchy

It's going to be quite a fall from grace. Giving notice to his Clarence House employees during a church service for his Mother is one of those WTAF moments. The mask is already slipping and he would have surely have known and approved, of that I am certain. Seems like respect goes only one way.

Cameleongirl · 13/09/2022 20:39

@vera99 The other article doesn’t say he’s given notice to them!

I reckon Charles is going to move to Buckingham Palace pretty quickly , don’t you, probably well before Christmas? So they had to inform his staff of the transition plans ASAP.

Tbh, if I were a staff member, I’d much rather know what’s happening right away, than be left wondering.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 20:40

Iain Dale on LBC just talking about this and finding it shameful and an absolute disgrace and saying it beggars belief.

greenhousegal · 13/09/2022 20:55

Does Charles know anything about image and getting things right? I suppose his own superficial image is ok if he has a pair of valets dressing him up. But as for basic common sense, well it really is bad.

The damage has been done now, no explanations about misinterpretations can cover the cracks in this one. Do it once, do it right.

Is the media becoming more willing to publish negative things like this now? It would appear so. There was another "pen and ink" issue in Hillsborough Castle today too.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 20:56

He's an extremely rich billionaire with extremely loyal and talented staff many with decades-long service. But whatever the financial and logistical logic of the decision. Why now? Why not wait until your mother is buried ? No doubt like "Backstairs Billy" did , they feel like family themselves and are mourning the Queen who they knew probably more than we will ever know.

Then you give them notice of uncertainty at the point they are working flat out to support that process. Could it not wait till next week? How absolutely ruthless the wealthy can be.

As the new spiritual head of the Church of England, he may wish to reflect on that.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”…

greenhousegal · 13/09/2022 21:00

@vera99

I agree about delivering this news in the mourning period. Ill judged, no matter how necessary the changeover is.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/09/2022 21:04

@FrippEnos the RF is one of the wealthiest families in the world. They can pay their staff no problem at all. Whether they choose to retain them is another matter.

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:08

@FrippEnos what a bizarre comment! Yes I do want to abolish the monarchy and staff would have to be redeployed of course, but that is not comparable with the spaniel sacking his staff while he’s at mums funeral! How can you not see that????????

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:10

Charles is an odious man - the scraping bowing and forelock tugging is nauseating. People have bloody short memories 🤬.

FrippEnos · 13/09/2022 21:11

And they will probably keep as much of the staff as they can by redeployment, as per one of the articles. But however much money you have no-one would be keeping two people to do the job of one person.

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:14

@FrippEnos and you see nothing wrong with this bastard of a man giving them notice during a church service for his mum?! Fuck me. He can do what he likes can’t help? There are just no standards as long as we know our place. Jesus fucking Christ.

Again the article says redeployment with possible redundancies. But you and others seem to want to say sacked or fired.
I haven't said that I am ok with it or how it has been done.

But have fun.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/09/2022 21:15

Yep. Some people lose all critical faculties when it comes to the RF.

Do you think he's had time this week to be working out redundancy notices? I doubt it, someone is planning the move and letting staff know how things stand. I'm sure his staff aren't stupid and will have thought the boss is moving to BP so what happens to us. Now they know that some will go with him, some will get jobs in other royal departments and some will get enhanced redundancy.

Cameleongirl · 13/09/2022 21:16

I really doubt that Charles personally decided the timing of this letter, he's been far too busy since the Queen died, whoever runs his offices authorized it.

It seems ruthless and I can see the PR aspect, but I honestly think he's going to be in Buckingham Palace within a month. His staff had to be told the plan right away, otherwise they wouldn't have been given proper notice.

I wouldn't be surprised if he moves by early October.

You are definitely projecting your issues there.

So I will step away from the thread and leave you and others to it.

Be well.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 21:19

It's like the Trump comment “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” . Die-hard monarchists going to do my king right or wrong whatever they do. No point in arguing the toss with them tbh. Iain Dale now taking calls on that issue now.

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:19

@ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp dont they just 🙄. These are the people who, if they’d lived in Herod’s times would have been saying “I don’t know what they’re moaning about, they have lots of other kids”. 🙄🤬

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:21

@FrippEnos projecting my issues??? 😂😂

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:21

@vera99 yes I’m reminded of that Trump quote too

Given that they are saying some staff have been there for a long time and they will offer enhanced redundancy pay if staff can't be redeployed it will be alot cheaper to find them other jobs if they can.

Some staff will probably be able to walk into a well paid job with a nice lump sum in the bank.

Now come on and get real, the King knew this was going to happen, his Private Secretary or his nearest functionary would have had a timeline for this. The only person who had any power over its timing is the King, based on his timetable for moving to Buck House.

He knew. Unless the Private Secretary or whoever released this notice is sacked him or herself for jumping the gun, then I will stick to what I think about Charles.

Novella4 · 13/09/2022 21:22

Sure they will
