To think there's bias against single family households?

Keyansier · 11/09/2022 20:30

Does anyone else think this? For example: I cooked beefburgers earlier and needed baps for them but they only sell them in packs of 4. I have no need for 4 right now. It means I have been forced to open the packet only for 2 of them to go stale unless I use them before their staledate. Obviously for a family of 4, then this quantity would be fine without needing to think of this.

Also, things like rent: Does anyone think this is unequal, that 1 person has to pay the same amount of rent that a family of 4 would pay for?

I guess I am biased because I don't have any family like many on here will have, but it's always seemed unequal to me.

Surely you don't need a property the same size as a family of four? Confused

pickledpotato · 11/09/2022 20:32

Bias?

Are you for real?

How silly

SpinningFloppa · 11/09/2022 20:33

I thought you was going to actually have some good examples but these are just silly 🤦🏻

LIZS · 11/09/2022 20:34

Freezer, smaller property?

Rosewaterblossom · 11/09/2022 20:34

You could say that about couples too though. They only need 2 baps but would need to buy 4.

Rent, well you're renting the property based on number of rooms, not family size. A family of 4 could live in a 2 bed, a couple with no kids could live in a 2 bed, a family of 6 could live in a 3 bed.

I don't really see your point 🤷🏼‍♀️

Flumpymc · 11/09/2022 20:34

I'd freeze two 🤷🏻‍♀️

hedgehoglurker · 11/09/2022 20:35

If you only need 2 out of 4 buns and can't use the others before they go stale, freeze them. It's really not a conspiracy against you.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/09/2022 20:35

Hmm I'm a single household, although both my adult dd's are still at home.

Andromachehadabadday · 11/09/2022 20:35

I have been a single parent and certain things are more difficult. But I don’t think life is biased against single parents or single income households.

You don’t rent a house per person. You rent a property, so while there’s more of an impact on a single household income, it’s not biased against single parents. Just like mortgages are based on, the value of the house. mortgages harder to get as a single household.

Breadcakes etc are sold based on the quantity people usually buy. Certain shops will have smaller packs some won’t. I am sure you can’t find use for breadcakes later.

KvotheTheBloodless · 11/09/2022 20:35

It's definitely tougher as a single parent, but not for the reasons you state - the bread rolls is a red herring, there are loads of families of 3 or 5. We use the extra buns for breakfast or sandwiches the next day. And the rent thing is a bit bonkers - 4 people take up a lot more space than 2, you need a bigger home with more bedrooms.

However, there are plenty of genuine reasons why being a single parent is tougher. Managing on one salary, no-one to share the load of drop-offs, pick-ups and annual leave during the holidays or when your child is ill. Never getting a break unless you get someone to babysit.

LadyLothbrook · 11/09/2022 20:35

You can freeze bread you know.

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 20:35

Some things I agree are set up for a family of four, but rent can't really be cheaper. There used to be more support for single wage families and I think there still should be as being a single parent is even tougher than regular parenting due to lower incomes.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 11/09/2022 20:36

What about a family of 5? They have to open a second packet of baps, with 3 going stale 🤣🤣

listsandbudgets · 11/09/2022 20:37

I raise you a bias against a family of five - by your theory they have to buy TWO packs of buns and watch 3 of them go stale. They also almost never quality for family tickets and have to buy an extra full price child ticket. I could go on

listsandbudgets · 11/09/2022 20:38

@CaroleFuckingBaskin sorry cross post

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 11/09/2022 20:38

We're a family of three. Everyone has to fight for the last one.

HangOnToYourself · 11/09/2022 20:38

I get the bunn thing, I was literally thinking yesterday I wish they made packs of 2 lol.

Same here.

SpinningFloppa · 11/09/2022 20:38

That’s me Im a single parent to 4 and have to buy 2 of most things which is annoying but no I’m not being discriminated against 🤣😏

Danikm151 · 11/09/2022 20:39

Your point is a bit misguided but other examples:

council tax- single person discount is 25% so you pay 75% but a couple would only pay 50% each.
holidays- it’s cheaper per person when you book 2 adults

RiderOfTheBlue · 11/09/2022 20:40

Some places sell baps in packs of two anyway, Morrison's for example. I often buy their two pack of wholemeal rolls.

And what is "staledate"? Presume you mean best before date. They're often OK for a day or two after that, as long as you wrap them. They don't magically go stale when the clock ticks past midnight.

WhereshouldIgo · 11/09/2022 20:41

Wise up. Do you need the same size home as a family of 4? Do you need a car big enough for 4 people? Do you pay over the odds because you can only holiday in school hols, and need a bigger place, and have to pay ££ because you have more luggage?
yiu can buy naps in singles in MANY supermarkets, bakeries, shops if that’s really bothering you!

cavia · 11/09/2022 20:41

Having been a single parent I agree with your headline but not with your content. 4 baps means burgers tonight and sandwiches with the other two tomorrow?

AloysiusBear · 11/09/2022 20:41

holidays- it’s cheaper per person when you book 2 adults

That's because you can share a room. A single adult gets the room to themselves.

There are few cases where this is actually bias. Its economies of scale etc.

We are a family of four, my local shop sells buns in a pack of 6.

Lndnmummy · 11/09/2022 20:43

Oh man its so harsh on here sometimes. Its Sunday night, OP might be feeling the strain and have a wobble. Being single is hard OP, and relentless and expensive.
