To think there's bias against single family households?

Does anyone else think this? For example: I cooked beefburgers earlier and needed baps for them but they only sell them in packs of 4. I have no need for 4 right now. It means I have been forced to open the packet only for 2 of them to go stale unless I use them before their staledate. Obviously for a family of 4, then this quantity would be fine without needing to think of this.

Also, things like rent: Does anyone think this is unequal, that 1 person has to pay the same amount of rent that a family of 4 would pay for?

I guess I am biased because I don't have any family like many on here will have, but it's always seemed unequal to me.

I lived alone for a few years. I bought 4-6 packs of chicken breasts/similar items and froze them individually, defrosted as needed. Much more cost effective.

I don’t know what you’re getting at with the rent, it depends on the size of the property. DH and I chose to rent a 3 bed house as a couple pre kids, we could have rented a 1 bed (we did at first) but we wanted the garden, office space etc. As a result we paid more. A single person can make the same choice.

YANBU. See also chicken breasts. I don't want to buy two and be forced to eat chicken two days on a row.

Go vegetarian/vegan. Problem solved.

Having lived by myself, in a couple, now 4-7 of us depending on who is here, this thread seems mad.

Thepeopleversuswork · 11/09/2022 22:22

Life is definitely harder for single parents. But the examples you've given are frankly daft.

I have seen vegan chicken breasts in packs of two. This problem of paying a premium for less does not go away by going veggie/vegan.

Society really is geared up to families or households having two incomes. I live on my own and my two friends live next door. They have far far more money than I do even though we earn about the same amount. I spend all my money on just living and they spend half their money on just living and the other half on holidays and meals out and savings. It's the same cost for Internet, water, electricity more or less, mortgage, repairs, decoration…

Sometimeswinning · 11/09/2022 22:26

XenoBitch · 11/09/2022 22:03

Disgusting. You could send them to work as chimney sweeps.

After this post I've realised how unfair my situation is! As a bigger family I should have more money. I'm seriously considering making the freeloaders do something. I've been far too laid back about my own choices and situation. Someone else should pay for it!

Your examples are odd and you seem to be playing the very sadly increasingly common game of "oh look, I'm a victim / discriminated against because of my .... "insert meaningless reason" / have it harder than most" game but you do realise that if you think the world is genuinely out to get you for being a single parent....

....you could always start a relationship...? Problem solved 🤷‍♂️

What is a "single family household" ?

Agreed! I'm confused! How can OP be single if you live in a family of 2 (used two naps) whilst don't have kids? Surely that makes a couple right?!

MarmadukeSpillageEsquire · 11/09/2022 22:39

The real scandal here is the - frankly - disgusting language some posters are using. "Breadcakes," "Buns." Really?! YABVVU.

TakeTheOffPisteRoute · 11/09/2022 22:39

@Keyansier can you explain to me how a "single person" living alone differs from a "single family"? You seem to imply they're different but I genuinely can't figure out what a "single family" is in your definition - what makes someone living alone a "family"?

A single person can have 2 burgers in 2 baps for dinner!

Confuciusornis · 11/09/2022 22:52

I was single for ages and I couldn’t afford to live alone so I flat shared. Sometimes — shock, horror! — with strangers! I made some wonderful friends that way, and since I dated my flatmates’ friends a couple of times I could quite easily have met a partner that way too. I really don’t see what the problem with it is. Yes, life is in some ways harder for single people, and there are real areas where accommodating those with children indirectly makes things harder for the childless. Eg I used to find it irritating when the parents at my job (higher ed) ducked out of the irritating 8 am/ 6pm teaching slots because of childcare meaning that the childless amongst us ended up covering them all. On the other hand, of course, single people (though not single parents, obvs) can go on holidays in off peak times rather than during the boom weeks of school vacations. (I don’t suppose you think the higher flight and hotel costs during those periods represent ‘bias’ against families, you OP?) And rent, hotel rooms, packs of chicken breasts? Make some friends, get a freezer, stop acting like sharing your space with people you get to vet beforehand is a terrible violation of your human rights.

TakeTheOffPisteRoute · 11/09/2022 22:56

@Sometimeswinning very true... 🤯

Doesn't this really complicate things?!

I mean:
-what if a couple considered of 1 1 bap eater and 1 2 bap eater? They'd need 3 right
-or perhaps a family of 3 (usual definition of family with no hidden negative-extras, not OPs one where family means 1 person) with 2 1 bap eaters and 1 3 bap eater.. that'd be 5 right?

How on Earth would those biased bap packers know how many baps to pack in a pack to best screw over "single families"?!

MangyInseam · 11/09/2022 23:04

I find that with a family of six nothing is sized for us.

It's not bias, it's just that things can't be best ft for everyone, so often they are best fit for the average family.

santorinii · 11/09/2022 23:13

Keyansier · 11/09/2022 20:59

Sorry, I thought the term single family households meant single people, didn't realise it didn't. But yes those that are asking: I'm talking about a single person in the household with no children or partner. I think there's bias against us when it comes to the food and other industries. Don't think it's nasty, or on purpose to hurt us, but just something I pick up on that others may not realise if they are in multi-person households. I see the posters agreeing with me are the ones that are in the same situation and the ones that aren't are from larger families, which is my point.

I do and don’t agree with you. I think single people in general can be discriminated against. But these are not good examples!

MintJulia · 11/09/2022 23:13

I just freeze whatever I don't need immediately and use it later. It would be a horrendous waste of packaging to produce for one.

Most supermarkets sell loose bread rolls and vegetables so you can buy exactly what you need if it really worries you. Butchers sell loose sausages and meat by the gm. And homes are available in all different sizes.

The real unfairness starts when couples earning £100,000 can keep all their child benefit, while a lone parent earning £51,000 cannot.

Keyansier · 11/09/2022 23:16

Sometimeswinning · 11/09/2022 21:57

Totally agree with this. 5 people in our house and only 2 bother to work! The other three spend all their time at school and don't bring home a penny!! I feel our mortgage should reflect this.

I suppose you thought you were being funny when writing this? I don't have children (3, or otherwise) so how is it in any way comparable? Is having two people paying for everything comparable? Yes. That's the point I was making.

@Diverseopinions
People used to invite lodgers into their family home - I'm thinking of the one in the Paddington Bear stories, it was just what people did to survive

Okay, but I'm not Paddington Bear though.

I'm in a family of five. I have my burger naked so I don't waste the 3 extra buns!

I hate that using a butcher gets rolled out as a solution to buying things like one or two sausages.
If you buy a single sausage from a butcher, it will cost almost £1. I bought 3 from my local recently.. it was £2.77. You can get a whole lot more from a supermarket for that.
Being single costs more, and you waste more too.

You're giving advice like this without any irony in 2022, really?

I don't live in a family of 2, I live in a family of one (myself) and ate two burgers and used two baps, and have no children. Not sure why this is difficult for you to understand?

OP posts:
caringcarer · 11/09/2022 23:26

Why don't you just freeze the two bread baps you don't need? House rent is per house regardless of how many people live there. My son lives alone in 2 bedroom house. Is he not in a similar situation only using one bedroom? You are being unreasonable.
