AIBU?
Commenting on threads you've no interest in
Arbesque · 11/09/2022 10:54
Prompted by another thread, but why do people come on threads to announce they've no interest in the subject, can't understand why the OP would bother starting such a thread, are bored with threads about this matter, have never heard of the person being discussed etc?
It's as if they think the OP has done something wrong. When actually all they have to do is click off the thread (or not bother opening it in the 1st place) if they've no interest. No one cares if you don't comment, we won't even notice.
Am I being unreasonable?

Oh come on OP, no one is interested in this surely?
Like that you mean?
Yes, I think in life they get to cast their disapproval with a sneer or physically walking away, on a forum they don't get that option (Nobody can see their distaste), so they have to announce it. I always think it says more about them than about the post.
Although, just to say, I have seen distasteful threads that shouldn't be on a forum like this - They tend to get pulled pretty fast though. That I don't disagree with (Although I don't think you are talking about those?)
MassiveSalad22 · 11/09/2022 10:59
It’s main character energy isn’t it? Everyone is the man character in their lives and some people haven’t twigged that everyone else is too…. And therefore think everything is there for their entertainment/relevance.
MassiveSalad22 · 11/09/2022 11:01
I find it weird this new thing I’ve noticed on here - some long and emotional OP, asking for advice, and people come on and just say ‘I hope you work it out’ or ‘all the best OP’. Just don’t post! You don’t have to!

Well that’s 2 minutes if my life I won’t get back 🤣🤣🤣
And someone always does this joke ^

I think posters used to have to post something to follow the thread? So they would have to say something... but now you can watch without commenting but some people still do this.... I'm never sure why some people post like this either? I only post if I have something to add, and over half the time what I wanted to say is already covered.
SpinCityBlues · 11/09/2022 11:10
Some posters now just put 'f' or 'F'. Apparently it means 'following' and is completely unnecessary.

It's sometimes to 'bump' the thread, I think. I've done it sometimes if I've found an unanswered thread, to get it back into active for the OP although I don't have advice to give.
tenbob · 11/09/2022 11:12
I live for these posters! What motivates them? It’s mad
my favourite was someone asking for a recommendation on a brand of dishwasher, because she had a choice of 2 and couldn’t decide which one to get to replace the old one
several people replied along the lines of ‘I don’t have a dishwasher. Washing up hardly takes me any time’
Umm, ok then. Thanks for that.

I love the ones like this. Or people who go on to the 'dog house' topic to tell us all they hate dogs because they smell and bark
Pixiedust1234 · 11/09/2022 11:22
. Or following - sometimes the "watching thread" doesn't work so doing that helps them find a thread.
No idea op, good luck - bumps up the thread
Don't have a dishwasher, I use a bowl - are idiots. Verbal diarrhoea in text form
Why you posting this, your opinions stink - nasty person full of self importance
zingally · 11/09/2022 11:32
Surely this whole thread is an exact example of what you're complaining about...?
If you don't think a thread/a comment, use those wonderful pointy things on the ends of your hands, and SCROLL ON BY.
ColourChartMadness · 11/09/2022 11:35
You just have to laugh and ignore. Don't let it get to you.
It's funny though when you're talking about a movie with an certain actor and posters say "Oh I can't watch anything with ... in", or you are talking about a certain destination and posters say "I wouldn't consider going there, I like to go somewhere more luxurious on my holidays", or you are talking about buying a flat and have always lived in a flat and posters say "Oh, I would never be able to move from a proper house".
I mean what is it exactly anyway? Is it scorn? Sometimes I think people come on to the thread feeling that they have to comment or something, like the thread needs their presence? Are some people not able to just let a conversation continue without their particular viewpoint being represented?
I commented because I felt I had to!
KeepingKeepingOn · 11/09/2022 11:57
I think it’s a weird superiority thing - it’s the online equivalent of two Hilda Ogden lookalikes peering down their noses at someone, thinking they’re being discreet 😂
I posted yesterday asking for advice on something specific; cue loads of people telling me they’ve never had that problem or thought about it. I mean, ok…great? 🤷♀️
TheseusScamander · 11/09/2022 11:58
Piercing thread the other day, oh so important poster needs to impart how they hate piercings.
Ok.
Clue was in the title.
NuffSaidSam · 11/09/2022 12:01
It's very, very odd. I've been here for years and it's always been the way as well, you'd always get someone saying 'this has been asked before' as if each question is only ever allowed to be asked once. Such a weird choice to comment on a thread you have no interest in.
SpinCityBlues · 11/09/2022 12:01
One this morning:
OP: Shall I put the heating on?
Poster: It's warm where I live.
midsomermurderess · 11/09/2022 12:04
People, some people, have a need to be seen. Even if it's just to say, 'Why are you bothered about . ..'. There is a rush, a validation. It's like posts where for pages, people repeat things, make responses almost word for word identical to the 100 above. I must be seen.
VelvetDancer · 11/09/2022 12:05
I’ve never even heard of any of these people. But I don’t watch TV. I’m just better than you.
Thepeopleversuswork · 11/09/2022 12:15
It’s demonstrating superiority.
Classic example is when someone posts something about a random celebrity and ten people tip up to say: “I couldn’t care less about x/I have never heard of x.”
It’s usually a stealth way of saying: “I am more highbrow and intelligent than you and I don’t have time to concern myself with celebrity trivia.”
Which is ironic because of course they are concerning themselves.
IncompleteSenten · 11/09/2022 12:16
Arrogance.
They think their opinion means something when in reality nobody gives a flying fuck what they think about anything.
