Light turned on by itself

I'll keep it short, went to bed last night - we have an ensuit bathroom and I know 100% I turned the light off (all lights off at night) would defo have switched this one off as you can see the light glowing round the door frame and it bugs me (I face the door when in bed) Woke up at about 2am for a wee, light is switched on😱husband is away, kids wouldn't come in to use this bathroom and the door is super squeaky so would have heard. Btw light switch is on the outside. Didn't really sleep after that so hanging this morn. Do I need to move, perform an exorcism or get an electrician in? 😂

If you want this to be a “woo” thread then I’ll leave and you can crack right on

if you’d like to hear more about how moisture can affect switch functionality etc, then cool

IcedOatLatte · 11/09/2022 10:00

Coincidentally the same thing happened to me a couple of nights ago, I assumed I'd forgotten to switch the light off

PortalooSunset · 11/09/2022 10:01

It's something you do as a habit so you naturally assume that you did last night to but you probably just didn't.
Unless the light was on with the switch still in the off position?

Keyansier · 11/09/2022 10:09

This is a known tactic by burglars, to test people's reactions (or lack of) before a big rob. Do you have a loud house alarm OP that would definitely wake you up?

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:12

@SavoirFlair I want to hear it all! I have no idea how it was on?

Switch was in the on position

I really am sure I turned it off, I hate any light when I go to sleep (blackout cutains etc...)

Do you have pets?

How would moisture effect it on the outside of the bathroom?

Chikapu · 11/09/2022 10:14

I think as it was 2 am you're probably ok, it's turning on at 3 am you have to worry about.

Burglars come in and switch on the en suite light and then leave? How do they know how the person reacts? Or are you suggesting they hang around to watch?

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:15

@Keyansier we live in a flat, no alarm. There are windows in that bathroom but all latches down and secure. Front door still had chain. Can't see anything else amiss? Mate I'm not going to be sleeping tonight again am I? 😂

My thoughts exactly, why would they do that?

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:17

@Chikapu 😂

No pets although now considering a very large guard dog or vicious feline

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:20

@PortalooSunset I mean of course that is a possibility but I hate any light when I sleep and this door has a full on halo of light if the light is on when it is shut

You would hate my house my cats turn the taps and the lights on I swear someone could be living there and I wouldn't notice

Pollydon · 11/09/2022 10:26

I am massively woo......... 👻👻
But this is most probably an electrical fault.
Our bedroom touch lamps kept coming on during the night , turned out to be small power surges.
Or you may have not turned it off but have a false memory of turning it off because it's part of your usual routine.

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:34

@Isaidnoalready well at least I would have had something to cuddle while I was alone with my thoughts and imagination at 2am 😳

Was it Paddington!

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:35

@Pollydon I love a bit of woo too but I felt huge fear and always thought it would feel like a bit of a comfort as opposed to absolutely shitting myself😳

You know some rubbish burglars.

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:37

@turningpurpleygreen you never know! I would hope he'd have left me a sandwich for the inconvenience of losing a nights sleep

Cw112 · 11/09/2022 10:37

I'd just burn the house down and get a new one lol. No time for that nonsense!! I'd have myself scared silly. In a more rational sense maybe you sleep walked or went to the toilet in a daze and then straight back to sleep? Or maybe one of the kids did come in and you didn't hear them and they went back to bed? If it keeps happening then I'd try a new house but I'm a big chicken lol

Mollymalone123 · 11/09/2022 10:38

When we have brief power cuts two of the lights in our house come on.could that be it?

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 11/09/2022 10:38

I think it must be a fault with the switch. I would get it checked.
We stayed in a holiday chalet last week. The TV was off, but on standby (red light) when we arrived. On the first night I was sitting reading after DH had gone to bed and the TV suddenly came on! We hadn't had it on at all, and the remote was next to the TV and hadn't been touched. I looked for some sort of timer, but nope. I am wondering if the people next door did it with their remote!

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:40

@HarpicHarpy well British Gas are already robbing me blind for electric, maybe it's another tactic to squeeze an extra few pounds out of us now the new price cap has been set 😂
