Light turned on by itself

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 09:44

I'll keep it short, went to bed last night - we have an ensuit bathroom and I know 100% I turned the light off (all lights off at night) would defo have switched this one off as you can see the light glowing round the door frame and it bugs me (I face the door when in bed) Woke up at about 2am for a wee, light is switched on😱husband is away, kids wouldn't come in to use this bathroom and the door is super squeaky so would have heard. Btw light switch is on the outside. Didn't really sleep after that so hanging this morn. Do I need to move, perform an exorcism or get an electrician in? 😂

@Cw112 I was lying there going, yep we're moving, can't be doing with this! My anxiety has some sort of peak if I wake up in the night (worrying about everything) once the morn comes I'm much calmer.

@Mollymalone123 we have an alarm but its not set (we have never set it - its a rental property) BUT if there is a powercut, it starts wailing once the power comes back up (absolutely terrifying when its happened in the middle of tbe night!)

Could have been you in your sleep?

onmywayamarillo · 11/09/2022 10:48

My kids always leave the light on and I'm amazed I never hear them get up!

Was it Paddington!

Given that Paddington is now the grim reaper I'd hope not

This is a known tactic by burglars, to test people's reactions (or lack of) before a big rob. Do you have a loud house alarm OP that would definitely wake you up?

What a load of rubbish!

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:51

@AssignedSlytherinAtBirth jeez I would be catatonic! When my son was a baby, he had a rocky seat that you could play twinkle twinkle on when he was in it. Cue one night he's in the moses basket next to me and I wake up to plinky plunky twinkle star from the living room of its own accord...needless to say all the shitty horror films I'd watched all came to life in my imagination 😂

Get the salt!!

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 10:54

@BlossomsOnATree @onmywayamarillo

I mean of course it's possible, tbh with my husband away I am an even lighter sleeper - I've always been a bit of a wimp sleeping on my own though since I was little. Might convice the kids to have a 'fun' sleepover in our bed tonight 😏

SavoirFlair · Today 09:57
If you want this to be a “woo” thread then I’ll leave and you can crack right on
if you’d like to hear more about how moisture can affect switch functionality etc, then cool

SavoirFlair...I get where you're coming from, but...

My husband and I (sorry, too much watching the royal telly this week!) were super-sceptics, and would still describe ourselves as such. I don't believe ghosts exist, but I do believe people see them, which is different. Haven't myself though.

But whatever is going on in whatever is described as poltergeist activity - I now wouldn't be so quick to dismiss. I won't go into boring detail here, but after a week of weird and unsettling events in our house about 15 years ago (lots of incidents - it was terrifying) my husband came into the sitting room with a glass of wine and put it down on the coffee table. We both saw it rise very slightly and shatter - all over the table and carpet. He'd just said to me 'Look, it's Friday, just try to forget about it and put it out of your mind'.

THEN....some months later we were sitting up in bed one morning with a cup of tea. Under the window, on the floor, was a large flat basket containing wrapping paper etc (about 2 ft/60 cms long and quite heavy). My husband said 'Well, at least all that business has stopped." At that moment a big roll of sellotape on top of it suddenly shot across the length of the basket at high speed - not a gentle slippage - it went with such force. No, the surface wasn't sloping and nothing had moved, touched or shifted the big basket.

Neither of us spoke - I know I was horrified and sincerely hoped that it hadn't really happened. But some time later he said to me, when talking over all the weird events which had happened earlier in the house 'I didn't like it when that sellotape shot across the basket', so I knew he'd seen it too.

Nothing since then. It stopped. And yes, for all those who are into the paranormal, we did have an unhappy teenage girl in the house at time. I'm not making any claims for these experiences - but one thing is for certain - they cannot be explained as far as I can see. But I'm completely happy in my house. if you believe the folklore about poltergeist activity (whatever it may be), it's to do with a person, not a place, and that would seem to fit our experience.

I saw that the other day, Winnie is not looking his best 😂

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 12:09

@CulturePigeon ok so I am booking a Priest and an electrician then 😳 that sounds utterly terrifying!

Sunnyqueen · 11/09/2022 12:17

I mean I love the possibility of creepy, paranormal happenings but one light being on is a stretch even for me 😂I consider myself a very light sleeper but there have been things I've slept through I've been surprised at. I think one of your kids just went to the bathroom in the night.

IncompleteSenten · 11/09/2022 12:18

Book an electrician.

Wat2do222 · 11/09/2022 12:22

@Sunnyqueen so I'm booking a priest an electrician and a behavioral therapist for me kids that are terrorising me 😂 I am going to check and take a pic of the door this evening and if it's on again tomorrow I'll book the removal van 👻

Yes - it was very disturbing at the time. But it did stop (ooh - perhaps I shouldn't type that!). We are a very rational scientific household and I have to confess, I tend to listen politely when told 'woo' stories...but am very sceptical. But it's very telling that we never discuss the goings on when we're in the house...which is silly, I know, but it feels wrong!

I have no explanation. I see there's another thread asking how such experiences can be explained, and I'm not going there! All I ever say is that we couldn't explain the things that happened..and when sceptical friends sneer, I have to suck it up BUT I KNOW WHAT I SAW!!!!!

Wagsandclaws · 11/09/2022 13:23

I agree, I know what I and my best friend, husband, Mum, sister, brother and assorted other friends and family members saw and heard over the years.

Now I don't live there anymore I question myself but there is no point, I too know what I SAW.

For something as simple as a light switch especially if you didn't see it actually switch itself on I would get an electrician in.

Honestly the chances are it's an electrical fault or you simply forgot as we're done tired.

GentlemanJay · 11/09/2022 15:22

When my 89 year old mother died I moved into her bedroom. I was back living with her 18 months previously after splitting from my wife.

Every few months or so her bedside telly would switch itself on in the night. It always made me laugh and gave me a warm feeling.

Moofart · 11/09/2022 15:35

I completely believe all things woo but it's also possible your were sleep walking and turned it on in your sleep before getting back into bed.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 11/09/2022 15:39

Could you have only pressed the switch part of the way? So enough that the light goes off but not enough that it "clicks" onto the off position if you know what I mean? And then in the night it's reverted to the on position. My kitchen light does that sometimes, though usually only a few seconds afterwards.
