To notice a growing hatred and intolerance of woman online?

foxofthefells · 09/09/2022 16:11

It's mostly in the past 2 years, typically in youtube comments under relatively benign things such as tv drama or film. I am also noticing it more on Amazon reviews when watching Prime tv content.

It's basically a fairly angry dismissal of women in general, so if a female character runs a police team or has an important, respectable role, the comments will often claim it to be 'woke' or 'women worship'. It is as if any respectful characterisation of a woman, especially in positions of power (whether in a career or sexuality) is degrading to men.
Alternatively, if the film or series depicts a troubled or vulnerable woman they remain suspiciously silent.

I have been watching and reading the same stuff over many years on the net, but have only noticed this growing loathing in the past two yrs or so.

More troubling are the comments or reviews of stories that depict crimes against women (Broadchurch, etc), where the content is described as 'pandering to women', 'men hating' or, again (and predictably....'woke'.
So, technically, it seems to be upsetting a lot of men to have to watch justice being done for rape and assault against women.
One crime series I watched recently depicted male members of a comany being held to account for sexual harassment. The comments/reviews for this were full of men complaining that back in the 80's women didn't mind being 'felt up' at work, so what is all the fuss about?

Has anyone else noticed this? I certainly don't look for this type of crap online, but often find it nestled in otherwise innocent places, and it appears to be growing.
I can't get my head around why any man would feel angry that we have to reduce harm and inappropriateness in general. Who are these cretins? Are they just baiting for a fight? Most of them seem genuinely upset that they can't enjoy the degradation of females in media anymore. It's a bit grim.
How many of them are there, and is this likely to become worse?

@User135644 and that treatment is usually by women not men in case of megan
Also she is much more in the limelight
There is a lot said about Andrew online as well and on here an awful lot and he hasn't been found guilty either by a court of law

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 20:14

@Kanaloa but if we have rape in law for men should there not be an equivalent charge for women ? Equality has to go booth ways , i would imagine male violence would still be higher by some but doesn't mean its ok to ignore the other way either .You see sometimes women who have had affairs with 15 year olds and they are often not treated in the same way a man would be , thats not fair either as its the same crime

Start a thread about female sex criminals and how you feel they’re getting away with too much. Don’t hijack one about rampant sexism and male violence online.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 20:22

@Kanaloa last time i checked you can't tell anyone what they can and can't post ?
Not everyone else has stuck to just online either have they?
Would you say all women behave well online ? My point is online seems to bring out the worst
Just look at how people reply on here when everyone isn't in agreement with them

You’re trying to derail the thread by making it about what women do online. That’s like going onto a thread about boots and posting several replies about hats.

But as you’re committed to misunderstanding me, there’s no point in me explaining the obvious.

tillytown · 10/09/2022 20:29

Men can now say they hate women, can threaten women with rape and murder , can doxx and torment women, and get away with it just by claiming the woman they are insulting is a bigot/terf/transphobic/etc with no proof required, and it's been then way for years now. Actual trans people have repeatly called out the men doing this, but they are being ignored. These men have turned the trans rights movement into a men's right movement and shut down anyone who points out their sexism, homophobia and racism. I'm not sure why people are only just noticing this, it's been this way since at least 2015

FOJN · 10/09/2022 20:36

The law for non consensual sexual activity is the same for men and women unless the crime involves penetration with a penis, contrary to what some people may think women can't do that so the law simply reflects that rape, as defined in UK law, can only be perpetrated by men.Women can be convicted of rape under the principle of joint enterprise but such convictions are rare.

i spent 20 years working in health care and looked after several women who were injured by abusive partners, one subsequently died from her injuries, the circumstances were fucking horrific. I have never looked after a man in a similar situation. Women can and do perpetrate acts of domestic abuse but trying to claim they do so with the same frequently or violence as men contradicts all the statistics available.

However much some women may feel the need to defend the honour of men it is a fact that men are more frequently violent than women so it's ridiculous to suggest that in the virtual world women become more abusive than men or that the lion's share of abusive people claiming to men could, in fact, be women. Of course many people lie on line and conceal their true identity but I find it easy to believe that men continue to be at least as abusive on line as they can be in real life because I've never been verbally abused by a woman in real life for saying no to one; men on the other hand...all the fucking time.

As soon as someone can supply me with the evidence that women make rape and death threats at the same rate as men I'll reconsider.

@YouAreNotBatman your post itself is pretty sexist
You have just grouped all men together
There are some pretty hateful women on social media too , sm in general can be pretty horrible as people hide behind a screen

Yes there are, they are the women who pile on the women who talk about being abused by men, thinking they are being "kind" and "polite" and "equal" in their treatment of human beings. Thinking that men will be kind to them in return.

Problem is that one half of the humans still treat the other half like shit.

Fluffygreenslippers · 11/09/2022 00:23

Yes absolutely. It’s been getting steadily worse and worse. Incel culture is seeping into everything & people are more & more stuffing themselves into evermore narrower definitions of gender. There are two perfectly ordinary men on my insta now calling themselves non binary. Why? Well one likes to wear nail varnish. The metal bands of my youth must be absolutely rolling. And girls everywhere opting out by declaring they must be men because they don’t like ‘gossiping’ or barbie, and being strong or intelligent is equated to being masculine. Women are losing in every scenario.

testerwiki · 11/09/2022 02:14

Its terrible... and its getting MUCH worse not just against women but children too. Just count the dramas on TV and see how many involve really gruesome rape, murder, and abduction of women and children. It's so bad I think there should be a government inquiry on this.

The message is that drama can't be exciting without a women/ kid being murdered: ie permanently silenced. This misogynism is WAY worse in the US where MANY of those Jan 6 rioters have domestic abuse records. Despite their willingness to lie about it, the real grievance for these men is simply about putting ALL women back in their place.. circa 1950's. Barefoot, pregnant and TRAPPED. They really HATE divorce and women being able to leave.

For the younger generation of sexually liberated women who think their equality is automatic and permanent ...Roe V Wade is just the start.

You've only just noticed? It's been about a decade now. Maybe it's only just breaking through to light social media users

This.

Google 'incel' and catch up with the rest of us.

The rapid growth of ‘incels’ is very scary. And it’s being kept very quiet by the media.

There are loads of newspaper articles about incels, and they have been talked about for quite a few years now. What paper are you reading?

Here are just a few articles on incels that I found in a few minutes:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/16/involuntary-celibates-incels-threat-us-secret-service

I think a lot of men are struggling with their "place" in life.

In the past, young men were valued for their physical strength, their endurance. In the modern world that is less and less important. Mechanisation & technology mean fewer jobs require physical strength.

Academic achievement is highly valued and the modern school environment enables more women to go to university. More women are independent, can buy their own homes, earn more than their male counterparts, don't actually need men. A woman who doesn't succeed academically can earn the respect of her peers by being a good mum. Somehow, being a good father isn't seen as an achievement among other men.

Some men react by getting depressed or suicidal, others with anger towards women. And we end up with blame, abuse and resentment, incels and woman-hating.

I'm not saying for a second that their behaviour is acceptable, but I can see where it comes from. It won't get fixed until boys are raised to have confidence their own abilities and to value women as equals.

That is an excellent post. I hadn’t thought about raising men to see women to equals would actually be part of the solution.

Hyacinth2 · 11/09/2022 06:34

I was reading about social media and it's a fact that to get peoples attention you need to diasagree with their views so the angry nasty stuff bubbles to the top. So if it says 'I love my wife's cooking ' you read and move on but 'women now are too lazy to put a meal on the table' - you are more likely to respond.
And that is happening over and over and over so the nice stuff sinks and the other gains prominence.

Also botts and deliberate stirrers are out in force.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 11/09/2022 06:44

There's been a growth of intolerance and hatred universally. In previous times people filled with anger and hate had a small voice that was only shared across the garden fence or at the pub - and it took a huge amount of effort to spread it. Now the internet makes it easy for such people to have a global voice - and evil seems to travel faster than good.

StolenWillowTree · 11/09/2022 12:58

Yes, extreme misogyny is terrifying and getting worse.

Unfortunately MN is very far right wing so anything that smacks of being "woke" gets attacked.

Plus the fact some right wingers have hijacked the gender critical movement to try to push anti-woke/right wing views under the guise that being anti-trans means being gender critical and thus a friend to women, when they hate women and want us all either dead or silent handmaidens.

AllAloneInThisHouse · 11/09/2022 15:33

@StolenWillowTree

MN is far right?
How?
