Union Jack outside my house

Iusedtobecarmen · 09/09/2022 12:05

Following the death of our Queen
Is it acceptable to put a Union Jack in my window as a gesture(the way that I did/do )for Jubilee etc.
Or is it inappropriate/tacky?

Am I being unreasonable?

My neighbour just really seems to like flags - not just British ones. He flies the Welsh, Scottish and Irish flags on the appropriate saints days. He flew the Italian flag for a week when the local trattoria reopened after lockdown.

There are plenty of nations “flaggier” than the UK - the states for starters.

I remember touring round Norway as a child. Lots of the small places we drove through seemed to have flagpoles with the national flag flying proudly in people's front gardens.

@Culldesack it is not a game. It’s a serious question. You claim that it is only the British who have mixed feelings about flying their national flag. This implies other countries don’t. That is just not true. Britain is famously covered in Union Jacks. I have no problem with that whatsoever at all. I have Union Jack bunting on the front of my house! I just don’t understand the idea that other countries are ‘allowed’ to be more patriotic. It’s not true!

I'm not having a go at you. Just that it's annoying, when it seems to be only the Union Jack and flag of St George, that get tarred with that brush.

I completely agree but it IS the case

Ever thought of moving out of the UK to a country in your beloved European Union?
I absolutely have and am jealous of friends who have done. Too many commitments here to make it workable sadly. That's the sad bit, that I have to consider leaving my own country to remain part of the greater whole.

It’s a free country (supposedly). Don’t make it a class thing. Do what you want. It’s your property.

I hung one from my window shortly after the announcement. It'll stay there for the official 12 days of mourning, and I'll take it down the day after the funeral.

I couldn't give a rats ass what the neighbours might think. I'm British and proud, and although I can a bit "take or leave" the monarchy, I was very fond of the Queen.

Of course it's OK. Ignore the nasty flag shagger type haters. They are not important or relevant.

It’s not a Union jack - they are specifically for use by the Royal Navy.
If you want to fly a Union flag, please make sure you have it the right way up. So many people don’t know the right way to fly it.

It’s because it’s been hijacked by the far right in the same way as the England flag, and in NI it is seen as a symbol of oppression by many. To me it looks tacky and screams skinheads and football hooliganism.

Oh FFS. Hmm It's shitty comments like this that make me want to keep an England flag up permanently just to piss off people like you.

I've got a Celtic FC flag in my back garden
I dance round it to my Rebal Music.

Why do you think I give a rats ass what you do in your own house? I’m just telling you what those flags means to me.

It feels wrong to me to fly a new flag now, flags should be lowered, not going up. You don't put the flags out because someone died.

No. Tacky. If you haven't got a flagpole, leave it alone.

We live in the US but hung a small British flag on our mailbox to show respect for the Queen even though we are Americans. 🇬🇧
