Union Jack outside my house

Iusedtobecarmen · 09/09/2022 12:05

Following the death of our Queen
Is it acceptable to put a Union Jack in my window as a gesture(the way that I did/do )for Jubilee etc.
Or is it inappropriate/tacky?

OP posts:
BrokenMatress · 09/09/2022 13:17

If you are flying the Union Flag it needs to be at half mast.

so in a downstairs window only please.

oiltrader · 09/09/2022 13:22

it is in bad taste

AuntieMarys · 09/09/2022 13:24

Make sure you put it the right way up

purplepandas · 09/09/2022 13:26

My next door neighbour always has a flag with a proper flag pole in this garden. Union Jack if half mast now, I am no Royalist but it was a sad moment to see.

youknownuthinjonsnuh · 09/09/2022 13:30

I rated this as YABU but I didn’t mean to! Go ahead and put the flag up 😊

InPraiseOfBacchus · 09/09/2022 13:30

(I used to be a building manager on a small Crown property)

If it's genuinely intended as a mark of respect, I wouldn't do it unless I had the right space to display it with the proper protocol and etiquette (i.e., a proper flagpole and displayed at half mast, taken down at night).

Nothing tacky about the flag. Slightly off to reduce it to a paper printout stuck in a window.

At the very least, PLEASE don't "fly" it upside down (yes, there IS a "right way up"!)

GB is the only country where flying your nation's flag, even in the country itself, is seen as controversial.

Yes it’s weird isn’t it? Like we’re embarrassed of the U.K. I know our history is a bit controversial sometimes, but still…

😂

Suetwo · 09/09/2022 13:34

Is it acceptable? Is it acceptable to put your nation's flag outside your house!!? Jesus, only in Britain would somebody ask such a question. Have the sneering, liberal-left Guardianistas really reduced us to the point where we worry about flying our national flag?! In most countries, no one would even hesitate. Imagine a Mexican or Argentinian or Egyptian worrying about such a thing!

God, I hope there is never another major war, because I don't know who'd defend this island. I barely know anyone under 30 with a shred of national pride or identity. On the contrary, most seem ashamed to be British.

Hintofreality · 09/09/2022 13:36

My neighbour has one flying half mast on a pole in his front garden.
He’s well known as the local lunatic.

NovaDeltas · 09/09/2022 13:38

Tacky. Performance grieving is always tacky.

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/09/2022 13:44

Our flag at work is now the union jack at half mast.

We had the pride flag up yesterday, however a half mast pride flag didn't seem very appropriate!

So go for it OP!

BecauseICan22 · 09/09/2022 13:51

Not at all.

We had one up for the Jubilee and more recently, one for India's 75th independence day. (We're a dual heritage household).

Do it, there is nothing wrong with your sentiment.

Anubis68 · 09/09/2022 13:52

I'd do it if I had one

DappledThings · 09/09/2022 13:57

I'm mostly ashamed to be British. I always felt I could ride on the coat tails of Europeaness though. I am proud to be European and would have far more happily defended the EU as a member of it than the UK alone. 🇪🇺is a less uncomfortable symbol for me to see than 🇬🇧.

But we digress. It's fine to stick the flag up if you want to. Most people won't notice and those that do will either approve or not care. It's not a big deal. Would be a bit embarrassing to get it upside down but again hardly anyone will notice. I know there is a right way round but I would have to Google it to check.

Sunbird24 · 09/09/2022 14:04

My neighbours never took down their Union or England flags after the Jubilee. They’re not at halfmast though as they’re not on actual flagpoles.

No it's nothing to do with the left-leaning 'Guardianistas' telling others to be ashamed of the UK. It's the fact that certain factions of English society (aka racist thugs and football hooligans) have high jacked the flag and used it for nefarious purposes such as telling people who are non-white that they're not welcome in this country and should 'go back where they've come from'. I do wish people who the read the sun and daily fail would think out of context and wonder what other reasons people have about not displaying the union/st. George's flag.

I don’t think the question is whether it’s ok to display your nation’s flag outside your house. More if it’s ok to have a flag up that’s not at half mast. Half mast is a sign of respect and mourning - traditionally hanging up flags from windows etc (as people did for the Jubilee - a celebration) would not be the done thing today. However times change and while I wouldn’t do it personally, I thinks it’s fine op.

Proud to fly the flag of a trade block. 🤣

Anubis68 · 09/09/2022 14:25

Just ordered mine.

Union Jack outside my house
Iusedtobecarmen · 09/09/2022 14:26

I'm normally proud to fly to the flag!it's normally a sign of celebration though.
I only wondered if inappropriate due to the situation* *
I have done it now, but hanging in window as no flag pole (surprisingly!)
can'tget rid of bold *

Who said we were being anti-nationalist? A lot of people here are more worried about proper national flag etiquette, and the value of avoiding lurid displays of performative emotion, than "ashamed to be British". And for goodness' sake, who mentioned a war?

Perhaps you ought to consider your tone. It's very un-British.

Thank you for pointing this out @dottypencilcase . For my generation (born mid-50s) it is redolent of scenes like this March.

All these years later, seeing the flag hung from houses or on flagpoles in private gardens still makes me shudder.
