To think businesses and schools shouldn't do anything differently because the queen has died?

I am very sad to hear the queen has died I think she is the only member of the family that deserves respect to be honest but I don't think we should all have to have things interrupted because of her death,

Schools, businesses and events cancelled I doubt very much is what the queen would want. Everyone is struggling right now without the added closure of things because an extremely wealthy privileged lady has passed away - it doesn't change anything to close things.

Also businesses don't need to all be posting over social media about this we see it in the news.

Aibu to think it's all just a bit much?

The majority of people in this country support these rotten 'royals'. You are sadly in the minority.

MonkNun · 08/09/2022 22:22

Surely what private businesses do is a matter for them?

Yellow78 · 08/09/2022 22:23

well said!

cowxuo · 08/09/2022 22:24

What you’re missing is that a lot of people who work for these businesses will want to watch / be apart of the funeral. A decent employer would and will consider what’s best to do for these colleagues and if that means closing for a few hours I’m sure they will.

Oldrockingchair · 08/09/2022 22:24

I agree OP and also hope businesses who need the income won’t be lambasted to trying to remind open when everyone is meant to be ‘mourning’ (I’m not mourning btw… I’m not sad an old lady I don’t know has died)

LimitIsUp · 08/09/2022 22:25

Closing on the day of the state funeral seems fine, other than that - just no

No they dont

cardibach · 08/09/2022 22:29

I haven’t heard that schools are doing anything. What have you heard?

declutteringmymind · 08/09/2022 22:30

I do agree on the day off for the funeral. However the work WhatsApp asking what's going on tomorrow is doing my nut. How about we follow the Queen's example of work ethic and get up and go to work. Even the train drivers and Royal Mail workers have cancelled their strikes.

Bonkerz · 08/09/2022 22:30

The funeral on 19th won't be a bank holiday so businesses will continue as usual.

mountainsunsets · 08/09/2022 22:31

Surely private businesses can do what they want?

If they feel it's appropriate to close that's their decision!

FourChimneys · 08/09/2022 22:32

My day will be exactly as planned beforehand. I doubt if the queen will be mentioned except in passing.

Will the royal family change their plans when I die? Quite possibly not.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/09/2022 22:32

Someone at work was really pleased she'd get a day off as she's run out of annual leave. I pointed out that as it's a hospital you'll have to come to work as normal. She didn't get it.
Going to a concert next weekend and really looking forward to it. So hope it's not cancelled.

Abraxan · 08/09/2022 22:32

Private businesses can choose themselves. If they want to close they can.

Schools wont be closed tomorrow in general. Whether they close in the day if the funeral will be decided higher up than school level. Likelihood is they will remain open, if it's a week day, as it won't be a bank holiday.

Schools are more likely to close for the coronation, as I'm assuming that might warrant a bank holiday,

Indeed.

@Tania64 is that true? Genuinely don't know the stats! I guess I must live in a very non Royal supporting bubble!

Lysianthus · 08/09/2022 22:35

As PPs have pointed out, we can hardly tell our inpatients to stop needing any care while we go to watch a funeral. It's a tricky one.

OnlyEverAutumn · 08/09/2022 22:36

Have they announced the day of the funeral already?

UWhatNow · 08/09/2022 22:36

Jeez however you feel about the monarchy, she’s a woman who has dedicated her life to this country to the bitter end, and officially Head of State - do you really want to live in a country where people don’t give a flying shit about the significance of this? It matters to the country and the world whether you feel it or not.

SugerNiner · 08/09/2022 22:37

I don't see how races being cancelled as a sign of respect does anything except affect businesses and ticket holders and staff.

DeeCeeCherry · 08/09/2022 22:37

Agree. Im self-employed and have just had bookings for next few days cancelled. Why should my income have to be impacted? Im a working class woman, the Queen was extremely rich.

I did hear some have been asked to wear black to work. I didnt even know this was a thing but, why can't people be given a choice as to whether they want to, or not? Not even as if you have to wear black to mourn anyway

KidsgroveBoggart · 08/09/2022 22:40

OnlyEverAutumn · 08/09/2022 22:36

The Times is saying Monday 19th

bellac11 · 08/09/2022 22:43

I feel sad for her family, same as I would for anyone and for some reason do feel its a significant thing although Im not a royalist

But businesses closing or posting about it are just grief virtual signalling as I saw someone describe it earlier

VladmirsPoutine · 08/09/2022 22:43

Is her funeral a public holiday? In any case I read it'll be on Saturday 17th. That said, people are already miserable. Autumn seems to have been hijacked by rain and dark evenings. People are broke. Cancelling things might make things worse.

Raindancer411 · 08/09/2022 22:47

We are British, we dust ourselves off and carry on...

Bbc good food show that was supposed to open tomorrow has now had Friday show cancelled . Gutted .
