To think businesses and schools shouldn't do anything differently because the queen has died?

I am very sad to hear the queen has died I think she is the only member of the family that deserves respect to be honest but I don't think we should all have to have things interrupted because of her death,

Schools, businesses and events cancelled I doubt very much is what the queen would want. Everyone is struggling right now without the added closure of things because an extremely wealthy privileged lady has passed away - it doesn't change anything to close things.

Also businesses don't need to all be posting over social media about this we see it in the news.

Aibu to think it's all just a bit much?

Why should businesses who are struggling take a financial hit for "a 96 year old woman you have never met"? How is that any different from you taking the financial hit yourself?

They have made the choice to take a financial hit, I have no choice.

really? it all feels very close to home here but I'm in Edinburgh and there's road closures and bus diversions already in place this morning. I think this will be tip of the iceberg disruption compared to what's coming in the next couple of days once her body arrives in the city (if it didn't already last night).

I'm about 25/30 miles from Glasgow so nothing has changed here

Schools will carry on as normal during period of mourning but may possibly have Mon 19th of for State Funeral. More likely to have a day off for King Charles coronation. Private shops and businesses must please themselves.

tigger1001 · 09/09/2022 09:04

"There is no way it will be a public holiday. Maybe 50 years ago but not in this day and age. Businesses cannot just afford to give everyone a day off and loose income"

It might be a public holiday. However a public holiday doesn't mean businesses HAVE to close. Many, including my employer, won't close. The only public holiday we close for is Christmas. Others may decide to close but use a holiday from somewhere else in the calendar to compensate.

Businesses will choose if it's in their interests to close or not.

Have the rubbish collections now caught up from the strike? If not I can imagine that the streets, in central Edinburgh will get cleaned up pretty quickly.

Actually, I am pleasantly surprised to see lots of younger people on my SM showing their respect for the Queen. Most of my colleagues at work are below 40, and are generally quite sad.
I find it perplexing that people would gleefully post about not giving a damn about her death. It’s like virtue signalling in reverse.

I find it odd that you would find it perplexing.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/09/2022 09:12

Wearing black to work? Denying kids their education? Fucking mental the lot of it. She was a semi-fictional face in the newspaper. People are a joke

Well said.

l don’t feel anything at all. Will be wearing blue jeans and a white top today. I would refuse to wear black if l was working today.

I’m more interested in the energy crisis.

I'm sad the Queens has passed but equally dreading the next day or so at work. I work in scheduling of heating engineers. We are booked solid for several weeks. If we close for the day, I have the horrible job of ringing dozens of customers to cancel their appointments. It causes so much disruption. I'm hanging on to the hope that we can offer the staff a day off in lieu, and they take it.

Shebelievedshecouldbutshecba · 09/09/2022 09:13

I totally agree with the OP. My child has a long-awaited school trip including pre-paid coaches, to an attraction today, which has announced it is only partially opening. The trip already had to be rearranged once. I bet they won’t be giving partial refunds for only partially opening ‘because of the Queen’ either. So, lots of disappointed kids, not sure the Queen would have wanted that.

You need to make a fuss there. If businesses are going to make these kind of decisions, they should be the ones paying the financial penalty.

I can understand. If I was a customer who then had an appointment cancelled and had to wait weeks for another I wouldn't be exactly happy. Not your fault, but I can understand the customers side of things too.

I hope your work doesn't cancel or at least can come up with something that suits their customers.

Good luck!

Actually you may think she’s just a face in the newspaper but we don’t yet live in a republic ( I suspect this will be the beginning of the end) so our serving head of state has died. She does have a state role and not just in here but in 15 other countries, so it is a big thing from a governmental and administration pov.

also in terms of land and estates Balmoral and Sandringham are not public assets, they were bought privately by Queen Victoria so they would not be returned to the country. Many of her private jewels are also personal and the art . Of course Windsor , Holyrood, Buckingham Palace are public assets although she paid personally for some of the repairs after the fire.

wonderstuff · 09/09/2022 09:21

cant believe things are closed, ridiculous way to run a country. This family has basically hoarded the country’s resources and assets over hundreds of years and we’re expected to hold them in such high esteem that we stop everything now?

Im up for a revolution personally.

Iliveonahill · 09/09/2022 09:23

I work in a local authority. We have been told there will be a 2 minute silence in council buildings on the day of the funeral. So I’m assuming we will remain open and it isn’t a bank holiday. So schools should remain open.

Seafretfreda · 09/09/2022 09:32

The Queen was the most stoical person you could find, as evidenced by her working this week. It’s entirely crass that so many are expecting a day off to fake-mourn.

If you are part of 'Operation Bridge' you shouldn't be posting on chat forums.

Marxist Leninist ?

Badlifeday · 09/09/2022 09:36

I would describe it as watching the funeral on TV and commemorating her life, rather than "fake mourn" personally.

wonderstuff · 09/09/2022 09:39

Wonnle · 09/09/2022 09:35

Marxist Leninist ?

No necessarily. France managed to ditch the royals without going full communist. I don’t think we need to start beheading them, just declare a republic and reform land ownership law.

cyclamenqueen · 09/09/2022 09:44

The US would have a public day of mourning if Biden died, also head of state.

I am not saying I think we should have a monarchy but we do have one, until the revolution comes, the monarch is the Head of State. People will fly in from all over the world for the funeral. It’s like when heads of state come for visits or conferences they always want to meet the Queen, they couldn’t care less about Truss or Starmer the person they want to meet is the Queen ( won’t be like that with Charles )

emmathedilemma · 09/09/2022 10:19

@tigger1001 i've not been into the city centre but the bins further out definitely haven't caught up and our household bin collection (first one for the landfill bin in 6 weeks) was a day late this week.

Don't be daft. The poster didn't divulge sensitive or classified information - merely confirmed that the funeral will be a bank holiday

MidlandsWoman · 09/09/2022 11:09

It's not just businesses. What about people who have waited ages for scheduled surgery or medical appointments? These will be put off by months if everything stops on the 19th.

8misskitty8 · 09/09/2022 11:20

If the funeral is the 19th then where I am in Scotland it will make no difference to schools. We are already closed that day as it is September weekend.
I do wonder though if they will have it at the weekend like Prince Philips so causes the minimum disruption to businesses/other schools etc.?

I wonder what the knock on effect will be. Will outlying areas be left in order to concentrate on the city centre!

I haven't been in Edinburgh since the strike started but a friend was in for the festival and she said the streets were just overflowing with rubbish. I can imagine that's not the image of Edinburgh that the Scottish government will want portrayed on the world news if bin collections are not yet up to date.
