To think businesses and schools shouldn't do anything differently because the queen has died?

daysayso · 08/09/2022 22:18

I am very sad to hear the queen has died I think she is the only member of the family that deserves respect to be honest but I don't think we should all have to have things interrupted because of her death,

Schools, businesses and events cancelled I doubt very much is what the queen would want. Everyone is struggling right now without the added closure of things because an extremely wealthy privileged lady has passed away - it doesn't change anything to close things.

Also businesses don't need to all be posting over social media about this we see it in the news.

Aibu to think it's all just a bit much?

Wearing black to work? Denying kids their education? Fucking mental the lot of it. She was a semi-fictional face in the newspaper. People are a joke.

dementedpixie · 09/09/2022 07:42

My dh was going to a rugby match tonight but its now cancelled as is the match ds was going to be playing in on Sunday. We're in Scotland and it all seems so far away from us.

Penguinfeather781 · 09/09/2022 07:47

“Anything differently” seems a bit much - I imagine my child’s school will hold an assembly about it for example which given whatever your personal views of the Monarchy it’s a fairly significant national moment seems reasonable enough.

I don’t think schools should close, but then I also think the funeral should be a Saturday rather than “10 days after” - though I doubt it will be. If private businesses wish to close that’s up to them.

Iamthewombat · 09/09/2022 07:48

..of course we should remember the royal family beings in much more money to the country, in tourism and business, than they receive.

Not this nonsense again. Show your workings, and prove that the royal family are personally responsible for bringing in marginal revenue to the U.K.

If we didn’t have a royal family we would all have to pay more tax. We would all be financially worse off if we didn’t have them.

Christ. You really have swallowed the kool aid haven’t you? How do you work out that we’d pay more tax if we didn’t have the royal family spending millions of, er, taxpayers’ money on security etc.?

We had a hotel booked for the tour of Britain, travelling down tonight to watch the cycling tomorrow, all cycling has been cancelled and winners awarded on what has been raced already.

We are still going to stay at the hotel and have dinner but imagine lots won't in a time that is very difficult for hospitality.

Funeral day will be a public holiday.

(I’m part of Operation London Bridge.)

If you are part of 'Operation Bridge' you shouldn't be posting on chat forums.

I don't see how races being cancelled as a sign of respect does anything except affect businesses and ticket holders and staff.

Yes, my student ds was due to work at the races today for a much needed £100

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 09/09/2022 07:58

One of the things I hate about modern Britain is that we have got to a place where money trumps everything. I know times are hard, but even in good times, it is all about money.

What about respect, loyalty, dignity and values? I want to watch the funeral. It will be historic. I think that if we are not granted a BH and businesses do not shut up shop on the day then I'm afraid that I will think that all decency has been scrapped in this place.

AclowncalledAlice · 09/09/2022 08:01

All my annual leave has been booked and I have been told I need to either cancel a day of it or take the funeral day as unpaid. Luckily I can absorb the loss of a day's pay but many won't. When people who are struggling are expected to make a financial sacrifice for a 96 year old woman they have never met, I can imaging it must be like a kick in the teeth.

I suspect your not someone who was affected by covid or struggling to pay your energy bills?

I don't think schools are planning to close, at least I've not heard. I suspect I'll be at work as there will still be parents needing childcare.
Yes it's sad but not sure how having a day off will help.

The majority of people in this country support these rotten 'royals'. You are sadly in the minority.

Not this one either.

I'm in Scotland and the Queen dying in Balmoral doesn't seem far away at all Confused

Just awful the way primarily low paid, casual contract staff are being fucked over by this kind of nonsense, how they're collateral because of some foolish ideas of respect and decency.

Oops forgot she was there. The whole royal thing seems far away to me.

RainbowSlaw · 09/09/2022 08:14

We were at the theatre last night, and there was an announcement that the royal family had requested theatres do not cancel performances - shocked if that is the case why so many shows and productions were pulled, and why there's talk of cancelling things all through the weekend!

All the race goers themselves get a refund though 😆

Our school are having an assembly about her life & the new king.
I think that's appropriate.

really? it all feels very close to home here but I'm in Edinburgh and there's road closures and bus diversions already in place this morning. I think this will be tip of the iceberg disruption compared to what's coming in the next couple of days once her body arrives in the city (if it didn't already last night).

I would disagree strongly with this statement. A lot of older people maybe, but I would say the younger generations don’t. All my of close friends and family are anti-royals.

OP - 100% agree with you.

Actually, I am pleasantly surprised to see lots of younger people on my SM showing their respect for the Queen. Most of my colleagues at work are below 40, and are generally quite sad.
I find it perplexing that people would gleefully post about not giving a damn about her death. It’s like virtue signalling in reverse.

Why should businesses who are struggling take a financial hit for "a 96 year old woman you have never met"? How is that any different from you taking the financial hit yourself?

There is no way it will be a public holiday. Maybe 50 years ago but not in this day and age. Businesses cannot just afford to give everyone a day off and loose income.
