To think businesses and schools shouldn't do anything differently because the queen has died?

I am very sad to hear the queen has died I think she is the only member of the family that deserves respect to be honest but I don't think we should all have to have things interrupted because of her death,

Schools, businesses and events cancelled I doubt very much is what the queen would want. Everyone is struggling right now without the added closure of things because an extremely wealthy privileged lady has passed away - it doesn't change anything to close things.

Also businesses don't need to all be posting over social media about this we see it in the news.

Aibu to think it's all just a bit much?

A strike has been cancelled. A strike! So much for fighting the establishment.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/09/2022 22:54

I imagine Monday 19th will absolutely be a public holiday

bloodyplanes · 08/09/2022 22:59

We have turned into a nation of bitter, selfish arseholes! A woman who dedicated 70 years of her life to the service of this country should absolutely be remembered in the correct fashion and all those that wish to watch or attend the funeral should be able to! She is from a generation the likes of which we will never see again, a generation where people had grit and duty and most of all stuck together. Now days its all me me me!

HotelKettle · 08/09/2022 22:59

It is the Queen of our country, of course we should mark the occasion.
Ans an added point, much of the queen’s wealth is actually ours (the British people) eg the palaces, the jewels; and of course we should remember the royal family beings in much more money to the country, in tourism and business, than they receive. If we didn’t have a royal family we would all have to pay more tax. We would all be financially worse off if we didn’t have them.

The majority of people in this country support these rotten 'royals'. You are sadly in the minority.

I would disagree strongly with this statement. A lot of older people maybe, but I would say the younger generations don’t. All my of close friends and family are anti-royals.

OP - 100% agree with you.

emmathedilemma · 08/09/2022 23:08

YANBU the country is in it’s knees financially, the amount that will be spent on funeral and coronation will make me quietly weep. Ditto, jubilee celebrations. Don’t get me wrong, she was a legend in her own right but the whole royal family “system” makes my skin crawl.

I was shocked by how many of the people outside Buckingham palace were young folk! Maybe just because of the time of day it was announced by many seemed to be teens / twenties.

I don't think so know anyone who supports them. I do know some people who had respect for the queen, but not to the point that they are actually pro monarchy. Recent events like Andrew's behaviour have particularly the stupidity of elevating one family for no good reason.

The funeral on 19th won't be a bank holiday so businesses will continue as usual.

Funeral day will be a public holiday.

Bbc good food show that was supposed to open tomorrow has now had Friday show cancelled . Gutted .

This is what I mean it's ridiculous I ruins the queen would be annoyed if she knew this after she was working two days before her death

I sure hope the money people paid for stands is reimbursed

Indeed, much if the queen's wealth is ours and we could put it to use for the nation if we scrapped the Royal family. It really is nonsense about how much the royals bring in. How would that actually decrease if the UK was a republic? Tourists would still visit palaces, buy tourist tat etc, but we could also profit from the vast swaths of land etc. Plus there would be lots to sell.

It’s the Instagram/Selfie generation,, many of whose mothers bought into the Diana hagiography. There are already photos circulating of mother and daughter pairings, taking a knee as they present flowers. And smirking at the camera.
A lot may not be pro-monarchy but they do like a show they can be part of.

Oh give over - how short sighted - you want to get rid of one distinctive cultural legacy and element of soft power this country has so property developers and their mates can profit off it and the lower orders will still have nothing. Talk about knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing…🙄

I learned about strong republicanism straight from my parents and grandparents. I suspect a significant number of the older generation had no time at all for the royal family, it's just those who did support them were more vocal about it.

whynotwhatknot · 09/09/2022 00:23

i heard it wont be an official bh she stated that in the plans

but things probably will close i dont know about schools another day to organise chidcare for some

sahmummy80 · 09/09/2022 06:57

Schools won't close and it won't be a public holiday

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 09/09/2022 07:04

They've cancelled the Great North Run's 5k event today, apparently with news to follow re the weekend's main event. I think it's the last thing she'd want given her demonstrated attitude of "pressing on". I agree that the funeral day could warrant a stoppage so that people who wish too (and it will be more than some on here think) can watch it but random events for the next two days should not be cancelled.

containsnuts · 09/09/2022 07:05

The royal wedding (Wills and Kate) was a public holiday so it will be odd if the coronation isn't.

TeenDivided · 09/09/2022 07:10

I think generally things should go ahead, except maybe today and the day of the funeral. Society is different now from when George VI died. However businesses will do whatever they deem suitable for their customers but also their employees.

However I do think people who refer to her as 'just a rich old lady' seem to have zero awareness of her duties and steadfastness and influence and respect in which she is held across the world. There is a sense of history moving on.

wonderstuff · 09/09/2022 07:15

We have tickets for football on Sunday and BBC said all sport will be cancelled, will be really annoyed if it is. Just got back to live events after lockdown..

tigger1001 · 09/09/2022 07:30

I know that we won't get the day off work for the funeral as we don't close for public holidays.

Whether the school closes or not remains to be seen.

I don't understand the need for cancellation of events. People spent money on tickets and possibly travel and accommodation and spend months looking forward to them.

Neversaygoodbye · 09/09/2022 07:30

Son's football match cancelled for this Sunday. I don't understand why all these events have to be cancelled, why is cancelling sporting events a mark of respect...are we all supposed to just sit at hime and be miserable? What does it achieve?

Agree. Far better would be for all these events to go on with a minute’s silence at the beginning and then a collection for one of the 600+ charities that the Queen was patron of.
