AIBU?

To think this could be very serious?

This growth has appeared on the side of my mum’s face, very suddenly. The doctor thinks it’s shingles. I think it’s not and could be something more sinister. Any opinions please?

I would see a different GP.

I'm not in any way qualified to answer but I don't like the look of that at all, I'd be looking for a second opinion ASAP

I'd get a second opinion sharpish. My dad has had skin cancer twice and it looked a lot like this. Very treatable both times, but not something to be left.

It looks dodgy to me I’m afraid, I’d insist on a 2 week referral (Im a nurse)

Shingles???? Not ANYTHING like my shingles. Does it hurt? Did it start as a pink weeping spot/blister/rash?

HappyHamsters · 08/09/2022 20:46

I dont think that is shingles, she needs another applintment and a second opinion.

That needs checking asap, by a cancer specialist

Should have also said it’s accompanied by sharp stabbing pains and that moving her tongue and hair is painful.

I had shingles on my face and it didn’t look anything like that. Please get her to see another doctor.

I have had shingles and it looked absolutely nothing like this. I'd get a second opinion as quickly as you can. I hope it is nothing but better to be safe.

She needs a second opinion ASAP.

This doesn’t look anything like shingles. I would get her seen by someone else asap.

I'm no doctor but shingles doesn't look like that.

I would also want a second opinion on that.

That is not shingles and it needs a dermatology referral under the less tham 2 week wait guidance. See another doctor tomorrow urgently

I have several relatives on my husband's side who have suffered skin cancer... and this looks like the patches they get when it makes an appearance.

But try not to worry. If it is skin cancer, it's only a small patch and easily treatable.

Get a second opinion. As with all cancers, the sooner it's caught the easier and quicker it is to treat.

Not that I'm trying to scare you OP. It nay well not be skin cancer, but if there's even the slightest chance, don't waste any time.

When did doctor look at that & say it looks like shingles? when did the GP see your mum?

I've had facial shingles... twice, and neither time did it looks anything like this! I would insist on a second opinion

I'd be getting an emergency gp appointment tomorrow if i was her! I dont have any experience of shingles or what it looks like but regardless she needs a second opinion

That definitely isn't shingles.
Many skin cancers are slow growing and very treatable but elderly relative had one in his scalp that was more rare and very fast growing. Treated and removed promptly but it involved a skin flap and plastics.
Get it seen by someone different ASAP.
