she makes people like Owen Jones look like trivial useless nonentities

TBF it's not like that is difficult.

The convention used to be that the Royal Standard was flown when the monarch was at Buckingham Palace and when she was not there no flag was flown. When Diana died there was an outcry as there was no flag at half mast. So a Union Jack was put up and lowered. Since then the Union Jack has flown at BP when the monarch is not there. There is always a flag, which can be lowered if necessary.

Everything is saying online that the death did unfortunately occur before the rest of the family could get there. However thankfully charles and camilla were there.

Dinoteeth · 08/09/2022 17:52

I was listening to BBC Radio Scotland the guy was going on about some red carpet awards ceremony tonight and let slip they wouldn't be having a red carpet because of the queens death I'm sure he was meant to say health. Whoops

inappropriateraspberry · 08/09/2022 17:52

@CanThisBe They may cancel everything else, but I bet Eastenders will be on! 🙄

My heart jumped as Huw said "I have to interrupt you as we've got a dreadful.......microphone problem"

Yes, mine too! I just clicked onto the news at that moment and the subtitles were the first thing I saw.

Lady Colin Campbell has put a video on YouTube saying the Queen is dead and going into her health. Bloody sickening that she’s put that up.

Chakraleaf · 08/09/2022 17:53

They ate talking past tense on BBC r4

CanThisBe · 08/09/2022 17:53

Will they tell us the truth about when she actually died or will it be announced as it it's just happened? I always thought time of death was an official thing, but when DH died the doctor didn't see him for several hours. I know what time he died but the official paperwork says about 4 hours later when he was certified dead.

BBC News are showing ariel shots of the castle and there were two men on the roof by the flag pole.

Don’t they lower the flag at sunset everyday?

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/09/2022 17:53

The way this country is going to the dogs, and now the Queen about to die, if she hasn't already passed - it just feels that her death will draw a line through the Great part of Great Britain - as I've said previously, I'm not a royalist, but she has been a symbol of duty and grace which is rarely seen today, and has always represented the country wonderfully. I hope her family get a chance to say goodbye.

They recorded a special Eastenders to play on this sombre occasion

SleeplessInEngland · 08/09/2022 17:53

Read Owen jones’ Twitter and don’t see anything particularly untoward in regards to the news.

Veeragall · 08/09/2022 17:53

@NanaNelly no it isn't.

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 08/09/2022 17:54

Blimey... Huw Edwards interrupted the guy in Downing Street and said "We have dreadful..." I thought he was going to say "dreadful news" .. He said "dreadful trouble with your microphone"....

Haha, I was in the kitchen giving DD her dinner and rushed back into the living room when I heard that!

ShhDoNotTell · 08/09/2022 17:54

Just checking in. I work in local government and it’s felt heavy this afternoon. I’m going to be very sad when the time comes. She’s been a part of our lives forever. We don’t have a time before her. She’s our normal. So it’s normal and correct to feel off kilter.

They are going to be showing a program at 8pm in remembrance of the queen. BBC have been updating it today with recent clips

There's a protocol that will be followed, it's not usually as it happens. Chances are it happened a few hours ago already.

I imagine they'll tell us the truth, even if it's not in the initial announcement, as I doubt they'd have had to wait for a Dr to get there to certify it.

I'm sorry about your DH Flowers

The Great just meant it was the larger of the two islands (Britain and Ireland).
