How to keep shirts white

Tobaiass22 · 07/09/2022 18:21

Hi all

Eldest just started secondary school and wears white shirts

How do you keep these shirts white and new looking?

When I was at secondary myself I remember my shirts looking off white, and the neckline faded, and underarms on the shirt yellowing or stiff with deodorant

I remember seeing other children's shirts looking as though they had just taken them from the wrapper new

So please give me tips on this

I soak them occasionally in milton. Drying in the sun also helps.

Biological washing powder and vanish in the wash for stains

Amazongirl9 · 07/09/2022 18:27

Wash whites separately, and add a scoop of vanish white, plus a Dr Beckmann glo white sachet.

I put a scoop of oxy stain remover powder in the pre wash drawer of the machine and set the machine to do a prewash before the normal wash. I also wash them with other whites. They stay white for years like that

Wash whites alone, that's pretty much all I do. I also bought the nicest ones I could afford, that was M&S. I found the Asda ones didn't keep as well. And they get a fresh shirt daily.

Tobaiass22 · 07/09/2022 18:39

Thanks everyone, I think I need to go out and get some vanish and dr B!

Another vote for Vanish!

GeorgeTheFirst · 07/09/2022 18:41

I don't use any of that. Buy pure cotton ones, a fresh shirt daily, wash whites separately. Mine were always pristine doing this

One final question is how often are we washing school blazers? And how long do your kids wear their school jumper in the week? Eg over how many days, (this is worn under the blazer)

Blazer never.

Jumper once a week.

Shirts - hot wash and Daz.

Nsky62 · 07/09/2022 18:43

Non bio liquid, eco bleach and Ecover stain remover, never had my whites not white

Katyawampus · 07/09/2022 18:50

Blazer when it looks grubby and/or every half term. My child doesn't wear jumpers now but previously I would wash them every two or three days (if they lasted that long without spillages)

Tobaiass22 · 07/09/2022 19:01

Mine has worn the jumper for 3 days, the armpits smell a bit like deodorant but the jumper is otherwise clean

DH says he can wear till Friday but want to get it right. He will have clean new shirt each day underneath

DS food willing wears jumper all week and blazer only if noticeable marks on it

Ticketybooboo · 07/09/2022 20:38

A scoop of soda crystals in with the powder for every white wash and blazer when it needs it- either if food on it or stinky.

luckylavender · 07/09/2022 20:46

Wash whites separately, use Vanish and an aspirin.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2022 20:50

My kids never wore a jumper.
Blazer washed when the armpits started to smell.

Washing powders contain bleach. Laundry liquids don't. You should need to use bleach if you are using washing powder.

RampantIvy · 08/09/2022 13:49

That should say you shouldn't need to use bleach if you are using washing powder.

Hymnulop · 08/09/2022 14:01

I like Ace whites for my whites. I am disgusted that some never wash/dry clean their kids blazers. Wtf?! Bet they smell like a rotten old egg wearing that for an entire year. Gross. Anyway thats by the by! I also dry in the sun when possible as this definitely bleaches them.

WithASpider · 08/09/2022 14:04

Bio laundry powder and Napisan for shirts. Has the added bonus of sorting any teen BO smell later on.
Blazer every half term on a handwash cycle unless it's filthy.

Blazer depends on season and general filth. In warmer months, I can wash it fortnightly. In winter, maybe monthly. When it smells, or looks grubby, it gets done. Thankfully (or maybe not, for BO reasons) it's polyester so washes and dries quickly.

greenacrylicpaint · 11/09/2022 13:24

blazer - when a bird has shat on it or there was a yoghurt explosion/food spill.

shirts - wash separately. don't add anything that has the slightest bit of colour. shirt setting on washer. bio powder. liw spin and hang on hangers to dry.

Waitingforever123 · 11/09/2022 13:27

Blazer I sponge down once a week. Dry cleaners every half-term.

Shirts white wash, whites only, non-bio and soda crystals and line dry in sun when possible.

AnchorWHAT · 11/09/2022 13:51

Scoop of napisan in my white wash with bio powder, hero sports wash if particularly stinky, only whites together then dry outside if possible.
