I've never voted Tory (and probably never will), but I'm glad to see the end of the leadership contest, and I'm quite glad to see the end of Johnson. Hopefully now someone will actually govern (but my expectations are low). Seems like she's heading for both tax cuts and an energy price freeze. If she's not going to completely ape Labour's policy, by not also introducing a windfall tax on energy generation, I'm interested to hear how she'd planning on squaring that economic circle. Maybe ruling that out was just a line for the Tory members, now she doesn't need to worry about appealing to them, I suspect it'll be a different story.

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 13:23

Her speech was cringe central.
Two years of listening to this
Wes Streeting is speaking sense now on tv
LT is talking absolute bull shit
The middle classes will also suffer too, maybe they might now feel what it's like to struggle a bit , the only up side maybe ?
Who knows

georgarina · 05/09/2022 13:23

It's terrible for the country, but I do hope it hastens the demise of the Tories.

It's the only silver lining

Note sure this is appropriate on any level to be honest. I imagine you marched the streets for Jo Cox too.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 05/09/2022 13:24

At least they have a higher chance of being voted out at the general election now

To be fair unless you moved home in the last year there is no reason to be paying a 6k fuel bill. If people didn't choose to fix (I did and paid an early exit fee to do so because it was so clear where energy prices were going) last September that isn't the states problem.

Speaking as someone who also saw the way the wind was blowing and fixed, this is a silly take. Millions of people being unable to pay spiralling fuel bills is absolutely going to be the state's problem in a very short period of time.

Workawayxx · 05/09/2022 13:25

Ugh, shit. I just hope she helps labour get in next GE.

It does feel like the glass cliff is relevant here though.

@fromdownwest bloody hell it was a metaphorical off-the-cuff joke on MN ffs I don't think any radicalised MNers are going to raid the kitchen drawer and act it out.

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 13:25

It's not just people is it , its business too
They can't absorb higher energy bills that much
They will go to the wall

SleeplessInEngland · 05/09/2022 13:25

Whatever happens, this must absolutely be the last time we have such a ridiculously protracted leadership contest. For 2 months there wasn't a government. Given what's ahead that's unnacceptable.

DIanaRiggFan · 05/09/2022 12:46

We’re all fucked. Putins gonna nuke us just to take her out

🤣🤭

rainingsnoring · 05/09/2022 13:26

We are absolutely fucked with her as the leader.

83DanishMum · 05/09/2022 13:26

The nod to "my friend" Boris "admired from Kiev to Carlisle" (followed by awkward silence) was SO illl-judged and cringe.

It was very much like the Replublicans who are scared to criticise Trump as they know the base supporters love him. Boris really is "Britain Trump" in that sense as apparently more of the Tory base want him back over Truss!

Aren't you a delight. Lots of reasons why people didn't fix, not least that their energy company went bust.

brianixon · 05/09/2022 13:26

There are so many Tory MPs that do not support her. If she does not get more subtle in her ways of dealing with everyone, repeat everyone there will be civil war in the Party.

Add to that the thousands of job losses due to restaurants, shops etc having to cut their opening hours.
Not to mention the loss of taxes due to these reductions.
I am not fan of gov intervention in the private sector, but spending billions to cap fuel costs, will save tens of billions in loss of tax and benefit payments

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 05/09/2022 13:27

It will be interesting to see if Truss actually makes it as far as the next GE.

83DanishMum · 05/09/2022 13:27

Word has it she's about the steal Labour's policy of freezing energy bills, having initially ruled out "handouts".

gnilliwdog · 05/09/2022 13:27

Is there any way the government can stop us having an election in 24? I am afraid we will be stuck with a conservative government forever.

83DanishMum · 05/09/2022 13:27

fromdownwest · 05/09/2022 13:03

What is very telling, is that even though the Conservative party have literally self destructed, Starmer and co have only managed to pull a 9% polling advantage from the cross over in Nov'21.

It highlights what a mess UK politics is currently in.

They had a mountain to climb after Corbyn to be fair.

OfficiallyBroken · 05/09/2022 13:28

Let's be honest, the leader of the Conservative party is merely the person that the true influencers in the party think can be their malleable puppet since, well, Thatcher probably.

The decisions they back are the ones their sponsors...I mean political donation partners want to see. The betterment of the UK or even thinking smaller, GB is never at the forefront of their thinking. Just how much money can be made from the average prole before they keel over.

Truss needs all the luck in the world for this appointment not to implode on her...and we need all the luck in the world to continue being governed by a party that's so openly corrupt.

Oh I'm sorry that my fixed rate ended because my energy supplier went bust! Meaning I was transferred to a different provider and given no choice of tariff or fixing a rate. God what a stupid, smug comment!

CarmenBizet · 05/09/2022 13:28

Yeurrrrrgh.

I know some people think that a politician's private life isn't relevant to their role in office but you'd like to hope that politicians with such power and responsibility would have at least some personal morals and ethics. We've been conditioned to accept absolute reprobates. Truss fails on every level and I'm genuinely concerned for the country.

She had a long, long affair with a married man, while married herself, only stopping when she got knocked up with her husband's child. So gross.

A huge number of people had fixed deals that were ended when their energy company went bust. They were pushed onto the higher tariffs with no sensible alternatives available
