To be fair unless you moved home in the last year there is no reason to be paying a 6k fuel bill. If people didn't choose to fix (I did and paid an early exit fee to do so because it was so clear where energy prices were going) last September that isn't the states problem.

The naivety.

It'll most definitely be the state's problem when small and not so small business start going to the wall.

There are so many Tory MPs that do not support her. If she does not get more subtle in her ways of dealing with everyone, repeat everyone there will be civil war in the Party.

Even more of it? What was the point of getting rid of Boris then?

Fixes aren't available to all.

Households who are off the gas grid are more likely to have complex arrangements that prevent them from accessing the full range of tariffs and suppliers.

But fuck them, it's their own fault according to youthey should just freeze or starve.

Speaking as someone who also saw the way the wind was blowing and fixed, this is a silly take. Millions of people being unable to pay spiralling fuel bills is absolutely going to be the state's problem in a very short period of time.

It isn't possible for everyone to fix. They only offer fixed rates to a percentage of customers. Once the quota is filled the fix rates disappear. Something to do with how they are hedging the markets? They can't afford for everyone to end up on a fix which is less than the market rate.

Notlosinganyweight · 05/09/2022 13:30

What happens with confidence votes with a new PM then?

LakieLady · 05/09/2022 13:30

DayKay · 05/09/2022 12:52

I just hope she has a good cabinet and advisors.

The supposed cabinet was leaked on Twitter earlier today. It included the wine-swilling, cigar smoking Therese Coffey for health, Kwarteng as chancellor and James Cleverly, possibly the most inappositely named MP ever, as foreign sec.

Rumour is that the permanent secretary at the FO has ordered one of these

for James Cleverly

Alexandra2001 · 05/09/2022 13:31

Her biggest problem is that only a 3rd of the membership voted for her & wasn't the MPs choice either... so she has no mandate with the party.

Secondly, inflation at around 15% will remove any benefit of increased spending for Health, Defence or Education, all public services will see a large real terms decrease.

The markets have no faith in her policies on austerity and tax cuts, so the £ falls, import prices go up, adds to inflation and with the RoW in recession, what little we export will fall too.

Fuck knows why she wanted the job, maybe she really is ThickLizzy?

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2022 13:32

reesewithoutaspoon · 05/09/2022 13:06

I,m calling it now. Despite the energy companies making vast profits on the current cap level. she will freeze it at say 2.5k and people will be grateful they arent paying 3.5k even though the energy companies could have cut costs and still make huge profits. and people will be thankful for it and forget all the other shit they have done over the last 3 years

Agree with this.

The big question is how is she going to pay for it. She's ruled out windfall taxes so cuts to budgets and/or borrowing?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 05/09/2022 13:32

Yep. She's on the backfoot before she even begins.

What a shame.

Good I see the left leaning Mumsnet already loath her. I think she will do well and our third female pm. Small state please and no bankrupting the country.

Ok so I take it you are in favour of the majority of small businesses going under in the coming weeks and the unemployment that will create?

not to mention families not being able to afford to eat etc?

vera99 · 05/09/2022 13:34

Rumours are Sir Graham has 12 letters in already in the conservative continuing clownshow.

Nonsense, no one predicted the war in Ukraine last September, not even you!
and most would have fixed for a year, so now facing increased bills.

How do people on key meters fix? thats 4.5m households.

The Tories will happily watch the country burn as they continue their in-fighting.

Will there be cheese?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/09/2022 13:37

We stopped hanging witches years ago didn't we??!!

I know someone in central gov (female DD, who's actually super lovely, compared to some of the career girl/cool girl CS DD's) who thinks Truss is on a par, if not worse, than Poisonous Priti (she's had first hand experience of Priti). Is there a special CS fast track programme for nurturing evil female top dog CS's?!

Reasons why people think she will be a disaster

  1. she plans to solve energy crisis by giving tax cuts to the wealthy to reduce their bills (e.g. cuts to NI and income tax higher rate possibly moving to 80K- doesn't help those who pay under threshold for income tax at all)
  2. tax cuts will lead to decimated public services and nhs and education suffering more
  3. she isn't interested in renewable energy at all. opposes on-shore wind and solar farms
  4. She wants to scrap EU working directive and introduce US working conditions- think 2 weeks max paid holiday, 60 hour weeks, 6 week maternity pay and no paternity pay. This will apparently grow the economy and help make the rich richer.
  5. she doesn't think before she speaks and is not diplomatic at all. See comments she made in the early days of Ukraine war
  6. wants to scrap NI protocol

Anyone want to add any others?

If she scraps the EU working directive and replaces it with US working conditions then the Tory party can wave goodbye to power at the next GE. People won’t forgive or forget that.

Wirewool · 05/09/2022 12:45

Let’s hear your policies…

I hate this retort that gets trotted out. It makes no sense. The poster isn’t claiming that she’d make a better PM just that Liz Truss is a terrible choice. The OP doesn’t need to have any policies!
Liz Truss will make a terrible PM. I would also make a terrible PM. The difference is that I’m not putting myself forward. Is this really such a difficult concept for people to grasp??

Agree. It should trigger a GE if they have another no confidence vote.

Yep, I'll have a go @JS87! In addition to your accurate list...

She is combative and erratic in her international relations and diplomacy (see recent comments slagging off our very important ally the President of France to get a laugh), and a liability on the world stage (pretty bad considering she was the Foreign Secretary!)

Apparently loathed by those who work under her (junior ministers and civil servants despise her) according to Rory Stewart.

Has no oratory skills as evidenced by today's speech. Zero inspiration.

Can someone tell me in simple terms why this is not a good option.....

We now have a Thatcherite, small state PM who believes in lower health spending with increased privatisation of the NHS, less government involvement in the economy and lower treasury powers, with more in no.10, and wants to reverse the ban on fox hunting.

She's previously argued that welfare discourages hard work, that the only worthwhile education is maths based. She advocates for a regional system which artificially raises and lowers public sector salaries in different regions, based on economic performance. Her tax reform is largely focussed on lowering inheritance tax and business tax, and she'd have to borrow to do it which is why the markets are panicking and falling further.

She's also indicated she'll do a quick and dirty budget, without seeking approval from the Office for Budgetary Regulation, meaning there will be no oversight on if it's fiscally achievable. Not to mention, completely fucks the three budget that was set out and agreed just last year, after years of 1year budgets. She's also said that she doesn't believe in the fiscal rules applied to governments to keep them accountable.

She believes the current inflation crisis is caused by there being too much money in the system, and so proposes to focus there rather than on borrowing and spending. Taking this (lack of) action is predicted to cause interest rates to rise to 7%.

She wants doctors to be paid less, and patients to be charged for appointments; reverse the ban on grammar schools; raise child:staff ratios in education and have a calendar school year.

She has an appalling relationship with the EU and EU member state premiers, thanks to her history as foreign secretary and her desire to overturn the NI protocol, breaking international law. She also wants to expand the Rwanda policy.

Her favoured cabinet includes her old affair partner as Chancellor, an anti-immigration, sex-abuse sect member home secretary, and an anti climate change man proud of never changing a nappy as Levelling Up secretary.

She does have some good, measured stances which I can also do if helpful, but overwhelmingly it's a disaster in my opinion, should she be given free reign to enact the above. However it's likely she'll be tightly controlled by the core party, though don't think they have any better policies!

I was supposed to work with/for Rory in a contract role a few years ago but went into private practice instead. He seems nice and sane compared to most Tory CS types.

I'm pleased that most junior ministers/CS's despise her but she will always have her arse-licking types one step behind. Is 'The Thick of It' on catch up anywhere??

midgetastic · 05/09/2022 13:41

The Tory hope is that
1: they convince people that it's their fault they are not able to become super rich
2: you have the working classes too exhausted to think or vote
3: they frig the boundaries more to reduce the number of seats where votes could actually count
4 if all else fails and it seriously going wrong , time to let labour in
