I'm quite keen to find out as soon as possible what Truss intends to do for the needy to be honest. So far her only concrete policy directly benefits the rich, which she has happily admitted, and has announced that she is abandoning the longstanding aim of fiscal redistribution, which both Labour and Conservative governments have up to now agreed is desirable.

theworldhas · 06/09/2022 08:28

Liz Truss and this compassionate Conservative government

Right Johnson, the same compassionate government whose policies against disabled people on benefits led to many people commuting suicide.

theworldhas · 06/09/2022 08:28

And Truss has been in it since the beginning.

BirmaBrite · 06/09/2022 08:30

I really don't like the term 'the needy'.

carefullycourageous · 06/09/2022 08:35

DreamOfSilence · 06/09/2022 02:11

I agree. It's too depressing to even contemplate.

For those who are disillusioned about national politics, I do get it. This is the deliberate intention of the style of politics of both Trump and Johnson, both advised by Bannon (who is a genuine villain IMO) - you make the decent people switch off because it is tiring and demoralising processing all the bullshit. This leaves the field clear for the bastards to do as they like. So you are doing what they want you to do.

One effective antidote to the MAGA/Johnson political poison is to engage with real people in local political parties and dial down the national news messages.

I really don't like the term 'the needy'.

It is a deliberately othering term, no one wants to define themselves as 'needy' so it makes one instinctively not want the help/assistance that will be given to the 'needy' to be given to us. We want to be the 'not needy'. This then makes us demand less support from the government.

The reality about the energy crisis is we are all in need of an acceptable and sustainable energy price in an energy market that works for the country. I am not going to be happy with a handout only targeted at the 'needy'.

I just hope she has a good cabinet and advisors.

Hahahaha, fascist puppets the lot of them !

Grantanow · 06/09/2022 08:54

81,000 Tory party votes is about 0.17% of the UK voting population. Sunak achieved a better result than expected and was preferred by a majority of Tory MPs. She has absolutely no personal mandate from the British people. The Tories are in dire straits if she is the best they can offer.

This kind of sycophancy is so strange. Sometimes people just want power for its own sake. Johnson should have taught you that much. Or indeed virtually any other leader.

I don't like Liz Truss at all but I respect her achievement in becoming PM. Third female PM.

Realistically, this does present her with a significant challenge. The ingredients for stable leadership are not there at the moment.

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 09:28

It is amazing that we have another woman PM
Whatever your politics, it's progressive and I hope that one day the Labour Party will also have a woman leader too.
Have to see how it works out.
I'm not that optimistic, but it is what it is and let's see how her delivery works and they can tackle all these huge problems.
It won't be easy for her.

vera99 · 06/09/2022 09:32

Well thankfully as she helpfully pointed out in her inspiring acceptance speech Boris got all the big calls right so she will be building on solid ground. 😂

ancientgran · 06/09/2022 09:32

A bit off topic so apologies but why do they need to fly to Scotland on separate planes? Seems very wasteful financially and also not good for the environment.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 06/09/2022 09:36

I like the front page of The Mirror - 12 years and everything is shit because they are all the bloody same

I don't envy her having to navigate that looming spectre in the background, skulking the backbenches planning his next move.

Say whatever else you like about Boris, and I have, but the man has certainly done everything he can to drag his party through the shit. Fair play to him for that if nothing else.

Same paper in Wales, but a face of a load of Labour First Ministers.

NHS on its knees
More schools in special measures than anywhere else
£50m spent on an airport now worth £23m
£4m of tax payers money to buy a field for a festival
£135m on a relief road project to be scrapped
£30m spent to increase the number of AM's to 100
Banned from buying nappies and paper during lockdown

The list is endless

The grass is not greener on the red side of the fence.

A complete overhaul is needed

vera99 · 06/09/2022 10:35

@PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior problem is he has dragged all of us screaming as well (well not all if the members had had a free vote they would have voted him back). Sir Keir should do a Joe Lycett at the next PMQ's and sarcastically agree with her list of deliverables. Laughter is the best medicine - great shame Dennis Skinner isn't around anymore.

I don't see any "achievement" worthy of respect.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 05/09/2022 17:28

I’ve just read that her Head of Comms used to have a similar position working for Prince Andrew. What could go wrong…

🤣🤣🤣

Well if you don't think becoming PM is an achievement then I despair. Everyone on here claimed that BJ only became PM because of his Eton education and connections. LT had none of that

Doubleraspberry · 06/09/2022 10:50

Becoming the Prime Minister is an achievement for anyone, and I can respect that. But maintaining that respect depends on how the job is done.

Do tell me what personal qualities she's harnessed and about the barriers and adversity she's overcme.

WatchoRulo · 06/09/2022 11:18

All those Tories who ordered a new Thatcher on Wish must have been really disappointed when Truss turned up.

Totally agree

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 06/09/2022 11:20

Anyone see Johnson's speech? He's really not planning to fuck off out of the way!
