First, off: there is no such thing as a "Brexit government". The Tory gov' had to be dragged kicking and screaming to deliver Brexit and it was only due to the Tory Party being in gov at the time of the ref', that the responsibility to deliver the decision became their responsibility.

That is a really interesting take on what actually happened. I guess it could work.

Jellykat · 05/09/2022 20:39

The woman hasn't got a bloody clue, i never ever thought i'd say 'bring back Boris', but this fresh hell is going to get the UK in deep deep shit!!

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 20:44

To be fair , Labour supporters always went on about Margaret Thatcher, it's how politics roll
( I've never voted conservative by the way )
I think for this current crisis it's all unhelpful to go on about the past, but is what it is.
I agree too that bring back Boris Johnson May take off .. as much as that grieves me to say it. Only by the die hard tories though.
I have a visceral loathing already of this new PM and two years of it is going to be tough. I really wanted to give her a chance too.
She has a messiah complex.
Have to see what happens I guess.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 20:48

Enjoy your honeymoon. Survation has released some new polling this morning suggesting that Labour has a 10-point lead over the Conservatives – but that if respondents are told Keir Starmer is the Labour leader, and Liz Truss the Tory leader, the Labour lead rises to 17 points.

Sporty2022 · 05/09/2022 21:17

Suella Braverman is a possible Home Secretary and Kwasi Kwarteng is a possible Chancellor according to what I heard on the radio earlier.
My god this is bad.

Kwartemg is all about free markets and a smaller state. Make that what you will….

And Braverman is very right wing, in fact so is everyone that will be in her cabinet.

Sporty2022 · 05/09/2022 21:19

It doesn’t really matter if Labour is ahead in the polls.
Liz and the Tories have two years to do a lot of damage.

Sporty2022 · 05/09/2022 21:21

I saw on the news earlier Liz Truss supporters from her constituency in Norfolk.

Middle class white pensioners.

mrsparsnip · 05/09/2022 21:23

I think she will be out within a few months and an emergency General Election called. If I were Keir Starmer, I would start polishing up speeches about worker's rights, the poor and hungry, the People's Charter, Women's Suffrage or anything else that shows Labour has its eye on the ball and is a viable alternative to this absolute failure of a government.

WhereAreWeNow · 05/09/2022 16:43

This is so fucking depressing. What have we done to deserve Truss? Or Johnson or May or Cameron?
The only positive I can find in this situation is that surely the Tories will lose the next GE now. We're a poverty stricken island, surrounded by a sea filled with our own shit, with a crumbling health service, crumbling schools, and we're facing a winter where people will starve and freeze to death. How bad does it have to be before Britain has enough of the Tories?

I’m hoping there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Enough is enough is gaining support and so is the trade union movement. We need people to really stand up and challenge what’s going on.

But I agree with your post. I mean there’s talk of schools closing due to the energy crisis! For fucks sake what’s going on?
And there are still people who vote this shower back in.

Sporty2022 · 05/09/2022 21:32

Can an early GE be called? Can Labour and the Lib Dems really put the pressure on?

Truss doesn’t have a mandate, the country didn’t elect her or her policies( if she has any )

vera99 · 05/09/2022 21:33

Charisma, intelligence, leadership skills, principles - usually a world leader gets to have 2 or 3 out of the four. Truss has none. It's puzzling to grasp what the Tory members see in her. I suppose they see someone like them. God help us all.

Sporty2022 · 05/09/2022 21:34

CapMarvel · 05/09/2022 12:53

On the plus side, she'll doubtless make the tories completely unelectable come the next GE.

On the negative side, the UK will probably be fucked beyond all recognition by the time we get there.

She is a fucking nutter. With Boris you could at least sort of see why people would like him but I cannot, by any measure, think why anyone would think Truss would be a viable PM.

Exactly this !

Tories need to push through their boundary changes first Angry

Sky News said July 2023 for the new (gerrymandered) constituencies. Corrupt fucking cunts.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 21:41

Her acceptance 'speech' (actually strung together empty slogans) must go down as the shortest, least inspiring, cack-handed attempt at being prime ministerial in modern times. FFS someone get her a thesaurus and DELIVER it to her sharpish. In a previous life, I contributed to speeches to folks like Vince Cable and others I would be ashamed if that was partly my work. Either it's her own and reveals how stupidly thick she really is or she is being actively undermined by her officials.

The people that mainly voted for her are probably mainly white ,wealthy, daily mail reading pensioners

vera99 · 05/09/2022 21:45

They will be up to speed then with Markle world. The Heil has about 6 articles online before you get to the Truss debacle. Probably even they are shamed at their work and know you can't polish a turd merely distract and deflect.

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/09/2022 21:46

I’m sure someone else has already posted this in this v long thread but anyway it is very funny.

It's not at all comparable, Thatcher was PM for over a decade and was an incredibly significant figure who made huge changes in the UK. Corbyn was leader of the opposition for a few years and his highest achievement was contributing to Theresa May losing her majority. Admittedly that was extremely funny, but he's not a figure of anything even approaching the same significance.

I may not like this news, but the LP need to get their act together too
Politics is in a bad way all round :(

I agree, Kier is just not a contender. I want to vote Labour but no chance I will until they overhaul.

vera99 · 05/09/2022 21:52

Next election in your constituency vote for the candidate most likely to unseat the Tory - it's that simple - hold your nose if needs be.

izimbra · 05/09/2022 21:53

Take a long, hard look at the NHS, social services, the criminal justice system, mental healthcare, children's services, housing and think - is this a good time have a libertarian half wit with a 'small state' agenda in charge? I think not. I'm genuinely struggling to be civil to my relatives who still vote Conservative.

BirmaBrite · 05/09/2022 22:00

Gerrymandering might work for them, depends if their core voters notice the impact of increasing inflation, fuel prices etc on themselves or their families. Also depends a lot on how well the 'its their own fault for eating avocado's/drinking coffee/having a mobile phone, campaign does ?

Interesting conversation with someone today who told me they would be fine, they would just have to put extra clothes on and live by candlelight if necessary, like they did in the 70's. Which is all well and good, but they were in their 30's in the 70's and didn't have the disadvantage of a chronic health condition which is exacerbated by the damp and cold.

Yes, if nothing is done then a lot of Tory core voters will be learning the hard way the difference between limiting heating when you're young and fit and limiting it when you're getting on a bit. Perhaps because of the increase in living standards for pensioners as a cohort over the past couple of decades, some people have forgotten some very hard truths.

I do actually think Truss will take some kind of action on energy prices now she's in, not least because her party can't afford for pensioners to suffer in the way that would be inevitable if she didn't, but the point stands.

You might not like her but you do not have 1% of her guts. You snipe from the side lines. What do you do to improve life for the needy in the UK?

83DanishMum · 05/09/2022 22:17

@StarDolphins out of sincere interest, who would spur you to vote Labour if not Kier Starmer?
