To buy an Oodie?

DH says they’re basically a form of contraception. I want to avoid using the heating at much as possible your feet will be freezing in the winter so I’m thinking of getting an Oodie and keeping a couple of blankets near the sofa in a box for on an evening?

Are Oodies really that vile?

I got one from matalan last year. Absolute godsend wfh in winter. Wear over a lounge suit with t shirt under that. Fluffy socks and a hot water bottle. Flask of tea...kept me nice and warm and I'd not put the heating on until dc came home. My teenager says it's awful, but I'm toasty, really don't care 🤣 it dries really quickly. I store mine in the ottoman with towels.

I have an oodie and a kuddly.

The oodie is double the thickness and warmer, but harder to dry

The kuddy is easier to do stuff in as it isn't as bulky, but for that you sacrifice a bit of warmth

So: you get warmth, reduce your electric bill and you don't have to pay for any more contraception. I don't see any downsides really 😁

I have a real Oodie as well as this cheaper version
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09CPP92QM?psc=1&amp%3Bref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&amp%3BisTryState=0&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

The Oodie is heavier but double the price. I found that the adults Oodie is massive. I'm 5'4 and size 8 and it engulfed me. It was so big that I couldn't even reach the things I'd put in the pocket because it's huge and my arms couldn't reach the bottom of the pocket. It felt like I was a child wearing my dad's hoodie. There is no way I could do the housework in it. They say on their website that they're 10% longer than the competitors, but that's just annoying. It went halfway down my calves and just kept getting on the way. I ended up giving it to my 6' sightly overweight husband and it's even pretty big on him. I've bought myself a kids Oodie now and that fits much better.

The Oodie is noticeably warmer than the Amazon one, but when I only had the Amazon one last year, I was never cold in it and generally I get cold very easily. I didn't wear thermals underneath, just normal clothes. My heating was set to 18 degrees last year and will be 17 this year. I've invested in the Oodie because I need to cut fuel costs but can't bear to be cold. The Oodie is better than the Amazon one but it's double the price (£25 for the Amazon vs £47 for the Oodie - I bought the Oodie last week during the summer sale). It's good but I'm not sure it's twice as good as the Amazon one.

Also, if you suffer cold feet like me, look up instant foot warmers. They are insoles that activate when you open the pack and the heat lasts for up to 8 hours.

Bliss when it's really cold. Mountain climbers use them so they must be good. Not too expensive either and worth it for the occasional time that fleece socks etc. just won't cut it.

Never heard of them.
I thought Oodi was a fancy library

We’ve got an oodie and an Amazon fake and they’re both great.

as a menopausal woman, I borrowed the oodie while working from home one chilly spring day.

thank fuck I wasn’t on a camera call. A hot flush ensued, I was encased in an already circa 100c outfit. So that plus a hot flush meant I hit nuclear reaction temperatures in under 2 minutes. These things are WARM.

no they’re not ideal for cooking a meal in - but for sitting watching TV or working or anything sedentary they are amazing.

someone asked what you do with them storage wise? I take mine off at bed and put it over the duvet - it’s an extra super thick huge layer!

Obviously we’re all different and I know loads of people LOVE these things, but the very thought of wearing one makes me feel smothered and irritable. I tried my sister’s Oodie on once (she loves it) and it was so massive and cumbersome that I just felt claustrophobic and fractious and vaguely panicky. I felt like I wanted to fight the bloody thing to the death!

My go-to for staying warm in a cold house is a fine thermal stretchy top and shorts from M&S as a base layer and then very soft, cosy loungewear set I got from ASOS in 2020 over that - it’s basically kind of fuzzy, ultra soft fleece cuffed joggers and a matching hoodie. Very snuggly, but also doesn’t make me feel like I’m being wrestled to the ground by a malevolent king-size duvet.

Kate and camilla can afford to keep their heating on though 😂

Exactly - that’s what I said

Anyone else worried that these massively oversized hoodie things might only be slightly oversized if you’re not a size 10?! 🤣🫤

I’m a 16-18 and the oodie drowns me I could fit two of me in it x

Tell him if he's lucky you won't be wearing much underneath.

The children and I have similar ones from the online home store. They are ridiculously warm. All were less than £15.

I had the cheaper version and ended up being sucked in to buying an Oodie.
One of my best ever purchases. It is SOOOOO warm (I generally don't wear anything under it) I bought them for my kids last Christmas and we all wear them when it's cold. I see it as an investment, lol. The quality is such that they won't need replacing for a long, long time.

They are incredibly hideous. Up to you though.

On another note, I see a lot of people on MN saying they're going to wrap up in winter to avoid putting the heating on. 'Not having the heating on' is not a good idea. You need to keep it on all the time and keep the thermostat on at least 12 to 13 C or the house will be freezing cold and will go damp (and the pipes could freeze ... ) Then when you do try to heat it up it will use loads more gas trying to get the icebox of a house warm again.

So 'keeping the heat off as much as possible' isn't a good idea at all.

There's a difference between having the heating on minimally to keep things ticking over and to have it properly warm and comfortable. We only usually have it above a low temp because of DS, when he's in bed all wrapped up we turn it down and snuggle up. Lol at words like hideous and disgusting that some have used, dramatic much?

I bought me and my two DC oodies for camping and must admit, we live in them over winter! Expensive but worth every penny, imo.

I bought the sienna hoodies from Amazon last year -

Those of you who've experienced these and 'proper' oodies - are the real ones worth the money? Am very tempted to upgrade!

So worth it. I have the Sienna too and there's really no comparison.

I love the idea of an Oodie but I hate all the prints. No offence to anyone who has them, they’re cute and fun but just not my style at all. I really want to be warm and cosy but don’t particularly want to be covered in superheroes or emojis. My loss as they do look lovely and cosy!

DP has a real Oodie and I have a Primark one. We haven’t managed to conceive yet but I’ve ruled out the Oodies as a cause since we generally take them off to have sex 🤣
We love them though, they are so cosy. I have short arms and find it more convenient than a dressing gown since the sleeves are cuffed.

Cheeselog · 05/09/2022 00:53

@FirewomanSam you can get plain ones - DP’s is just plain grey.

I love mine. Its blue with koalas. My husband says I look like a bell when I wear it lol. It's not the sexiest thing ever created but it's not really meant to be. Perfect for being cosy though!

This is the most tone deaf comment I've seen in a while.

It must be nice to be living in a world where aesthetics are more important than warmth, and you don't have to decide whether eating or heating is more important. That's the reality for many this winter.
