AIBU?
To send a boiled egg to school?
MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:30
I've just read that boiled eggs last for a week in the fridge. WIBU to cook 5 eggs on a Sunday and send my son in with one each day for his morning snack?
In his words he's "so lucky" any time I give him an egg so I'm not concerned about that... Just about if you would think that by Friday if the egg would still be okay? Taking into consideration being out of the fridge for 2 hours or so before it's eaten...
YABU - that's a terrible idea and the egg will be nasty by then
YANBU - go ahead and feed your egg fanatic 4 year old that cheap snack every day and save time on prep (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻)
Am I being unreasonable?

Considering that a (hard-)boiled egg will last for longer than 5 days OUT of the fridge, YANBU.
AppleKatie · 03/09/2022 22:33
would it be allowed? It’s strictly fruit only at my DCs school for snacks.
MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:34
Do they really?! So what I've read online is just being overly cautious then...
Yes luckily the only thing not allowed is junk food and stuff with nuts!
NotTheMrMenAgain · 03/09/2022 22:36
Oh good heavens no - the smell of a boiled egg is pretty unsociable and off the cards in some office kitchens/ shared dining spaces, so I’d say not great for a school situation. But I’m probably in the minority.
MarianneVos · 03/09/2022 22:38
Hard boiled eggs smell disgusting so I would say totally unreasonable! I mean, it won't harm your child at all but it's very antisocial.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/09/2022 22:38
I thought you meant on its own 😂 Well I didn’t really but it was a funny thought.
If it keeps that long, why not? I’ve not idea if they do though.
(very unhelpful post I know)
MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:38
I did wonder about that... Maybe I should play it safe with a babybel at first...

I always think fruit is a rubbish snack in the winter. A boiled egg sounds lovely! As does the cheese!
MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:45
Would be in the shell during the week but I would peel it for him in the morning!
The school actually provides fruit anyway... Same love me some cheese 🤣.
But a few have a mentioned the smell and I don't want him to be the boy with the stinky egg so I might steer clear for now!
eastegg · 03/09/2022 22:46
Ah bless your DS with his ‘so lucky’ comments! I’m a big egg lover myself. It’s an oft told story by DM that it’s all I would eat for ages when I was tiny.
I don’t think the smell would be much of an issue if you send it in in something airtight. But then I am biased in favour of eggs! 🥚❤️
TokyoSushi · 03/09/2022 22:47
Fine from a health perspective, but the smell 🤢 don't do it!
UnbearableLoss · 03/09/2022 22:47
I would be annoyed as a teacher having to peel a smelly egg every day. But it's a healthy snack!
MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:47
I know, adorable. He recently had an autism assessment and said (before it) that he was such a lucky boy to have a chat and he can't wait 🤣
Hoolihan · 03/09/2022 22:48
My son used to love a HBE in his packed lunch but eventually asked me to stop putting them in as he was being teased about it, primary school is brutal 😂
InChocolateWeTrust · 03/09/2022 22:48
In shell?
They don't smell until you peel them, which in a primary school its likely to be outside surely and takes a child barely any time to eat it. Smell then gone.
Only thing I would say OP is 5 eggs a week for a child that age might actually give them tummy ache.
InChocolateWeTrust · 03/09/2022 22:50
Eggs don't even really smell that bad. All food has some odour! It smells like tasty egg to me.
Surely they smell bad when they have.... gone bad.
Gardenista · 03/09/2022 22:50
The yolk will be grey and unappetising. I love boiled eggs but my family day they smell, my colleagues even object to the peeled ones from pret. I sit outside the office on a bench to eat them, if he’s willing to eat them in the playground that could be an option?
I agree they are a better snack than fruit though.
How about mini frittata? Same ingredients but less smelly?
SO224350 · 03/09/2022 22:51
When I saw the subject line I thought you meant as a pupil 🙈
dudsville · 03/09/2022 22:52
He likes them, they're a nutritious snack, do it. Nice good often has an aroma. We are far too precious about food smells.
Clevs · 03/09/2022 22:58
I take a hard boiled egg to work as a morning snack. I leave the shell on and peel it when I eat it. It may be smelly but it doesn't last long. I'm sure other kids will be taking other smelly food so I wouldn't worry about it. It's healthy and he likes them so just pack it in his lunchbox. Can he peel it himself? My four year old loves eggs too and can peel them himself, it may be more difficult if a teacher needs to help though.
Going back to your original question, I've no idea if you can boil and keep them 5 days in advance. I never work that many days consecutively so just boil 2-3 at a time.

I should have used this thread title, the time I accidentally gave DS1 a Grade 2 right before school photos 😬

I agree. I don’t like the tyranny of fruit as the go-to healthy snack. Ask a dentist what they think about between-meal fruit. It’s terrible. It needs to be with a meal really and not scattered through the day.
