To send a boiled egg to school?

MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 22:30

I've just read that boiled eggs last for a week in the fridge. WIBU to cook 5 eggs on a Sunday and send my son in with one each day for his morning snack?

In his words he's "so lucky" any time I give him an egg so I'm not concerned about that... Just about if you would think that by Friday if the egg would still be okay? Taking into consideration being out of the fridge for 2 hours or so before it's eaten...

YABU - that's a terrible idea and the egg will be nasty by then

YANBU - go ahead and feed your egg fanatic 4 year old that cheap snack every day and save time on prep (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻)

Maybe just do it a couple of times a week so they keep their appeal and he stills feels lucky to have one. I love an egg myself! They only smell once they’re peeled so tell him not to take forever to eat it and that might help.

RaRaRaspoutine · 03/09/2022 23:06

I LOVE the way he says he’s lucky! Eggs are great

Qnicey · 03/09/2022 23:08

My son takes a boiled egg every day.
His sisters roll their eyes and call him 'egg boy' but he says they're just jealous that he has a lovely egg and they don't.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 03/09/2022 23:09

Fritatta slice would be even better. Keeps for years in the fridge and you can make a job lot. Can freeze if you make them in muffin tins too.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 03/09/2022 23:10

having said that: the boy feels lucky to have an egg? Give him an egg.

and draw a wee face in the shell. They’ll all be wanting one within a week

Gensola · 03/09/2022 23:12

If he loves eggs that much and he’s clearly such a sweet heart I’d give him the egg! Adorable

icelollycraving · 03/09/2022 23:13

No. Eggs are smelly. I know one of Ds’ friends had one in his lunch everyday. This was after lockdown but when they couldn’t leave the classroom etc, so lunch at their desk. They all used to complain about the smell, don’t blame them.
In terms of what you asked, I wouldn’t give someone an egg boiled nearly a week ago.

icelollycraving · 03/09/2022 23:14

Only eggs my Ds was excited about were chocolate tbh.

MsChatterbox · 03/09/2022 23:14

Drawing a face on the shell is a great idea!

I'm glad a few of you find it amusing that he thinks he's lucky to have an egg! He's a very excited boy. I wish I had his excitement. On the bus he will say WOW another bus did you see it mummy that is just incredible. Wow a tunnel I am so lucky my first time under a tunnel. Wow a fence, did you see that fence mummy, I wish I could have a fence like that. Oh to be young again.

Well there seems to be a split vote on the egg!! Decisions decisions

I should have used this thread title, the time I accidentally gave DS1 a Grade 2 right before school photos 😬

Not quite sure why people are referring to 'stinky eggs' - maybe they've not had good eggs to go by. If you come across an off egg the smell IS super stinkingly awful.

But hardboild eggs as a snack is great. Maybe not everyday and best had within 3 days of boiling. If you want to batch-boil some eggs use the rest in a mayo.....

Xmasbaby11 · 03/09/2022 23:22

YABU. My dd loves eggs and would happily eat one every day in her packed lunch, but I do think the smell is antisocial so I don't give her them for school. Also think it's a bit messy to eat for a snack. Instead I send her with cubes of cheese in a little box, or breadsticks. My other dd takes a few plain or buttered crackers which go down well too.

They do have eggs for breakfast sometimes, lunches at home, or picnic lunches when we're having one outdoors.

I keep meaning to make some mini frittatas but haven't got round to it!

noworklifebalance · 03/09/2022 23:23

Pret and M&S sell boiled eggs with a couple of spinach leaves for an extortionate £2 and they fly off the shelf! Scotch eggs don’t smell either so I don’t think a humble boiled egg from home will smell.

Marblessolveeverything · 03/09/2022 23:27

I haven't heard of this as a snack our schools are egg free due to severe allergies.

Don't eggs smell of cold and peeled?

Thighdentitycrisis · 03/09/2022 23:33

I’m a big fan of the hard boiled egg and take one to work most days. I have my own office though and don’t even peel it in the staff kitchen

ive never kept one in the fridge fo 5 days though, good to know

Mariposista · 03/09/2022 23:34

How absolutely fab that your kid likes boiled eggs! I wouldn’t do 5 all at once (mainly as we switch snacks up each day) but also it only takes about 20 mins to boil - you could just put a fresh one in the night before while you’re doing something else.

When I saw the subject line I thought you meant as a pupil 🙈

😂😂😂 that made me laugh out loud

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/09/2022 23:54

Bugger me a lot of people here being very precious about the brief smell of an egg for the 1 whole minute between it being removed from an air-tight container and eaten. Can almost guarantee that everyone here either eats a particular item or eats in such a way that it briefly irritates someone else. Such is life. My colleague likes really ripe bananas and the smell makes me shudder but it's literally 1 minute a day.

Go ahead OP, sounds like your DS loves an egg and they're good for him.

Not sure about longevity, I'm half thinking they'll be fine, and half thinking if it were me I'd do 3 on Sunday and another 2 on Wednesday Grin

Facecream · 04/09/2022 00:29

I absolutely love eggs. And did as a child. I’d have loved to have one in my lunchbox- even once a week!! Smell? So what? So does juice and cheese etc. allergies are another matter and if not a problem I say give him the eggs!! Though given how easy they are to hardboil I’d do it the night before the gave them

Itstrueiagree · 04/09/2022 00:49

two words-smell and constipation.

MintyChipton · 04/09/2022 01:02

Personally I'd stick with the cheese, it's more sociable but then I can't stand eggs. My mouth is going all weird at the mention of them. Unfortunately for me my children love them, I can't watch them eat them though 🥴

I was going to suggest home schooling!

MissMaple82 · 04/09/2022 01:13

If you want him to get ridiculed yes go ahead stick a smelly old egg in

Mouldyfoodhelp · 04/09/2022 01:17

How long are people taking to eat an egg? They don't smell that bad and it's gone quickly and presumably often in a playground or canteen with many different smells

Stripsorspots · 04/09/2022 01:23

A boy in my daughters class had a boiled egg every day and it was smelly and the kids all noticed.

Don't make your son smelly egg boy. He can have a boiled egg every day when he gets home from school instead.

He sounds like a total sweetheart.
