To send a boiled egg to school?

I've just read that boiled eggs last for a week in the fridge. WIBU to cook 5 eggs on a Sunday and send my son in with one each day for his morning snack?

In his words he's "so lucky" any time I give him an egg so I'm not concerned about that... Just about if you would think that by Friday if the egg would still be okay? Taking into consideration being out of the fridge for 2 hours or so before it's eaten...

YABU - that's a terrible idea and the egg will be nasty by then

YANBU - go ahead and feed your egg fanatic 4 year old that cheap snack every day and save time on prep (🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻)

They go grey after about 20 hours. I still eat them but some people might be turned off?

9thlife · 04/09/2022 02:10

Yabu, they smell disgusting.
hard boiled or egg mayo. I certainly would not be peeling any eggs and having that linger on my fingers!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/09/2022 04:10

Why not boil five eggs and try one each day yourself, and see how it goes?

It would be worth documented what you are doing as it will help a pathologist if they are called in later. (Could possibly form the basis for an episode of Midsummer Murders?)

flyingant · 04/09/2022 04:23

I love myself a hard-boiled egg snack and often take them to work, either in their shells or already peeled. DO NOT listen to the person upthread who said they last 5 days out of the fridge. They clearly haven't left a boiled egg out of the fridge for more than a few hours themselves. Hard-boiled eggs are only good out of the fridge for a couple of hours. You can google it. 😁

  • Midsomer not Midsummer

I thought you meant on its own 😂 Well I didn’t really but it was a funny thought.

If it keeps that long, why not? I’ve not idea if they do though.

(very unhelpful post I know)

That’s what I thought, too!
I had visions of a large boiled egg, with a little school cap and blazer, sniffling through the school gates…!

Mrsuntidy · 04/09/2022 06:26

If he is only 4 then I would be concerned about choking. A whole hard boiled egg can often be difficult to swallow and they will often have their snack on the playground etc. Maybe chop it up in a pot?

Mrsuntidy · 04/09/2022 06:27

I know he won't swallow the egg whole 😂 just re-read my sentence. But they can often take bigger chunks when eating from a whole egg.

CrustyCrotch · 04/09/2022 06:34

I think people are a bit precious when they think others need to adapt because people don't like something.

Eggs smell eggy, I mean it's not known as something that's used to freshen up your pants drawer, or to spray on yourself as an aphrodisiac, but it's just a whiff at the end of the day.

It's wrong to deprive this boy of his eggs, because it's just adorable that he thinks it's lucky to eat one.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 06:34

they dont always smell,
dunk them in cold water as soon as you can them out of the pan

Username917778 · 04/09/2022 06:47

YANBU! My eldest takes a peeled boiled egg or two, pre chopped in half, some days as part of her lunch. She loves them and would definitely have told me if it was smelly!

MRex · 04/09/2022 06:50

In general, I think it's best not to have children get used to the exact same thing for lunch every day, variety is best. I also wouldn't trust them to taste fresh after 5 days, there is a difference between safe and tasty! Just do it fresh in the morning say one or two days each week. Other days give him a yoghurt (we buy big pots and DS picks the topping to stir in), cheese, savoury pancake slice (egg, cheese, flour, milk, veg), omelette slice, sandwich, crumpet or other snacks. Pancake and omelette can freeze then defrost in the microwave in the morning.

this will make me giggle for days

lurker69 · 04/09/2022 06:56

not unless he is likely to be unfazed by other kids being rude and mean about it, because unfortunately they will be.

Boiled eggs are only smelly when they’re
over cooked, if you cook them soft boiled so the yolk isn’t hard but medium instead, they won’t smell. Peel them all hot, they’re much harder to peel when they go cold.

My son and I have eggs in our pack up each day, I boil and peel 14 eggs on a Sunday and put them in a jug of very slightly salted water in the fridge to stop them drying out.

KangarooKenny · 04/09/2022 07:17

It’s a great snack, full of protein so will fill him up, and has its own biodegradable packaging if you don’t peel it.

InChocolateWeTrust · 03/09/2022 22:50

Eggs don't even really smell that bad. All food has some odour! It smells like tasty egg to me.

Surely they smell bad when they have.... gone bad.

They don’t. Someone used to bring two into the office every day 😂 we also had someone who loved microwaved fish on toast…. at 7am.

Suzi888 · 04/09/2022 07:19

Sorry- meant eggs do whiff!!

Lightningrain · 04/09/2022 07:23

If it’s to be eaten in the playground I can’t see smell being an issue.

i rink as a nation we have too many issues with ‘smelly food’. I draw the line at microwaved fish which stunk out the office for an entire afternoon, but some people are so precious and the list of non-smelly acceptable foods would be a handful of items. One ex-colleague actually used to wrinkle her nose, stand up and shout ‘who’s got smelly food?’. Anything that had been in the microwave set her off.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 07:28

if you are concerned why dont you boil them in advance so he can have them when he gets home from school?

JennyForeigner · 04/09/2022 07:37

Buy an egg boiler?

Then there is no trouble and your lovely sunny side up boy can have all his eggy dreams come true 😄

Snibril · 04/09/2022 07:41

I'm going to be taking a boiled egg to school (not a pupil!) in one of these from Lakeland. I love a boiled egg. It satiates my hunger more than a apple and is a great option for a growing child.

To send a boiled egg to school?
BusySittingDown · 04/09/2022 07:44

YABU just for the fact that you've brought back the memory of my friend bringing egg sandwiches to high school for lunch. Honestly, it smelled like someone had shat on our table! 🤢
