To think personalised pricing is unethical?

I already thought that using a club card to get reduced prices on food items was a little close to the mark, but tonight on TV I saw advertised that a certain supermarket is now offering personalised prices on food items when a loyalty card is used (nectar card). AIBU to think this is neoliberalism gone mad. Surely food costs what it costs. Fancy Mary getting lurpack for 5 quid and John getting it for 2 because of some known algorithm. Bonkers.

Of course it's unethical. But people like to get all these 'discounts', when really they've sold themselves... And ultimately it probably will cost them more in the long run because they are targeted by advertisers more as a result.

What ethics are being compromised? Confused

Life’s life and you need to get off your high horse and understand that.

Yoi can't see past the end of your nose
We are in a cost of living crisis. Messing around with people's access to food is not just "life".

Really?
Being a mom vlicn card member stops you having access to food....?

Really????

Tesco aren't bumping up the price for those not using a Clubcard, but they discount some prices for those that do.

Quick look at Tesco's current branded clubcard offers.

Pringles, £2 reduced to £1.65 with a clubcard. £1.65 Asda.
Diet Coke £9, reduced to £7 clubcard. £7.50 Sainsburys.
Gordon's Gin 1litre, £21 reduced to £17. £17 Sainsburys.
Fridge Raiders Slow Roasted Chicken Bites 6. £2.80 reduced to £2.25. £2.00 Sainsburys.

and so on.

This is not a discount for clubcard users, who are paying the same prices they would in another store up the road. This is an excess charge for non clubcard users.

Yes so ripping non cardholders off

I have a card btw but they are chancing it with those who don't like a membership I suppose

Non store*

I don’t agree with it, but personalised prices is with us in all
sorts of ways.

Think loan, mortgage and credit card rates. Those who can afford the least get charged the most.

I don't feel it's immoral but I simply don't want the headache of it. I want the shop I walk into to sell items for a competitive price. End of our relationship.

Moreover, I have experience of putting loads items in my basket to get special deals on, then walking out without having used the coupons I was supposed to use. Arrrrgggh... Realise my oversight, Look back at every till & customer service desk with 5 people waiting at it. I'm not getting back in line for my foregone 50p, am I? But I was manipulated into buying stuff I might not have bought anyway. so screw that. Give me a supermarket that sells everything at competitive price. That is where I want to shop.

JangolinaPitt · 03/09/2022 16:43

So went to Asda today where I normally shop and signed up for the card I had never noticed before…
Really where I grew up in a small town in Southern Europe every knew absolutely everything about everyone -zero privacy which is the same in all small communities.
I would rather Asda knows what soap powder I use than my sister in law noticing that my period is two days late

Agree. I hate the Tesco's scheme. It's should be a blanket price. End off.

Why? If you can't be bothered to sign up for a club card, more fool you.

Culldesack · 03/09/2022 17:25

I an sure some people just sit and work out what they can worked up about next. I have a Tesco club card because I like discounts. I have a Co op card because I like money off food. What seriously is your gripe OP?

But I don’t care if I get targeted by advertisers. I rarely buy anything because I have seen an ad!! I always compare and research bigger purchases and food i aka ways compare price per 100g or buy what I like the look of etc. I don’t think I’ve ever gone ‘ooh I’ll get hienz beans today because I saw an advert for it’!!

This. Those of us who have club cards have sold ourselves 😂. Hope those taking offence at reduced products aren't the same moaning about the cost of living. Crazy thread, bitter in its tone as well.

Clubcard vouchers have always been tailored; the whole point of the existence of loyalty cards is so they can track all of your purchasing data, and sweeten the deal by giving you money off of stuff you actually want - plus some random temptations obviously so you widen your range of items

Exactly. We're basically getting money off in exchange for them selling all our shopping habit data. I don't like the idea. I know it's not new but this idea of personalised prices based on how much of a good consumer you are. As a pp says. Very black mirror.

So don't do it then?

roarfeckingroarr · 03/09/2022 17:59

I love nectar points. I have a nectar points Amex too that I put pretty much everything on, then pay off in full at the end of each month. They really add up.

"ripping non cardholders off"

It's hardly essential items though.... Pringles, gin, chicken snack and fizzy drinks. Hardly store cupboard staples...

Culldesack · 03/09/2022 18:25

It's not an excess charge for non card holders, it's discounting for those who can be bothered to apply for a card and collect points. What about staff discounts? Still cannot understand the point of this thread.
