AIBU?
Builder nightmare ....aibu?
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:16
I'm having work done to my house,I rent through housing association.
It's been one thing after the other.
I've been getting new bathroom /kitchen /rewire and windows.
First of all she didn't tell me I could get my things put into storage.
Friday they were meant to turn up and didn't and nobody told me.
Yesterday was full re wire...so as you can imagine holes everywhere.
Today plasterers were meant to be here to sort holes out.
3 turned up at 8 am and 2 left saying
I'm allergic to cats
The other one left with headache
The 1 remaining said he can't do it all by himself and will do 1 room.
He said they can't come back till next Friday as other houses to do.
So have left me for a week in this state.
I have kids and cats and exposed wires ,holes in ceiling /walls etc
Aibu to be annoyed?
Unbridezilla · 01/09/2022 11:36
Honestly, yes it is disruptive, but that is the nature of rewiring. It's a dusty, messy process. Your builders should about as reliable as many of them are, particularly as they work for a housing association. It's not a profession known for good time keeping.
New kitchen and new bathroom are also very disruptive.
ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/09/2022 11:36
Did you think a new kitchen/bathroom/windows and full rewire was going to be a quick, clean easy job?
Yes its stressful (Im on year 6 of reno) but it will be lovely when its done, its just one of them things, jobs do have snags. Did you offer to lock your cats away?
Threelittlelambs · 01/09/2022 11:39
Housing association near here have a couple of safe houses remnants moving into whilst the work is carried out and then the next two move in
I would contact your landlord with photos
AverageJoan · 01/09/2022 11:40
I think YABU, the jobs you've described aren't quick or clean to sort and a week is hardly any time
ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/09/2022 11:43
3 turned up at 8 am and 2 left saying
I'm allergic to cats
The other one left with headache
The 1 remaining said he can't do it all by himself and will do 1 room
So 3 turn up, 2 leave as allergic to cats, 1 leaves with a headache, Where did the other one come from?
CantFindTheBeat · 01/09/2022 11:45
You are definitely not unreasonable to be annoyed.
Building work and repairs are necessary but messy and intrusive. No one enjoys them, even when the trades are reliable and consistent.
The not-knowing and dragging on is unacceptable. Have you got in touch with the organisers?
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:46
Today was meant to be the day they did the plastering ....not next Friday, today.
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:46
That was meant to say 2 left
1 allergic to cats
1 headache
Testina · 01/09/2022 11:46
Well it all sounds worth it.
Annoying to have the cancellation, but part and parcel of this kind of work.
I would be feeding back to the HA that if they have people who can’t work in a household with cats, they need to be managing that better.
You were always going to have exposed wires during major work like this though, so I think that’s on you to manage the kids and cats.
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:48
@Testina I did manage the kids and cats
They have now added a extra 8 days of exposed wires to the mix when it was meant to be done today
ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/09/2022 11:52
Ive had exposed wires in my bedroom for the last 2.5 years. What do you think will happen?
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 11:54
It doesn't matter what will or won't happen
They gave me a timescale of days and jobs to be carried out ...I shouldn't have to wait a extra 8 days and have to take more days off
ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/09/2022 11:56

ok so what do you want people to say? Honestly you are extremely lucky to be getting all this work done, some people fight for years for tiny repairs on their homes. You sound really ungrateful tbh.
loves2plan · 01/09/2022 11:57
I would hardly call this a builder nightmare. Things don't always go to schedule, 8 days is hardly any time to wait for it sorting compared to some building nightmares I've seen.
catmum134 · 01/09/2022 11:59
I agree with everything @ZeroFuchsGiven has said. Some people fight for tiny jobs, much longer than 8 days. At the end of it you will have a new kitchen, bathroom, windows and a rewire??? Get some perspective. Having a few holes in your walls for a week longer than you were expecting is such a small issue.
Testina · 01/09/2022 12:01

So just continue to manage the kids and cats then. It’s really annoying, yes - but it’s really not the end of the world. And it’s worth it.
Lippyass · 01/09/2022 12:02
Just buy your own place Op. Then, when you spend thousands on building work, you can dicate the terms of the build.
ItsSnowJokes · 01/09/2022 12:05
God there are some arseholes on here. OP is paying full rent to her HA and is getting a crap response from the builders, she shouldn't have to put up with that at all. OP get on to the housing association and see if they can help out. They may have something they can do.
PianoHouseBanger · 01/09/2022 12:07
Some dick responses on here.
If I had tradesmen booked in, and was given feeble excuses like OP was, amd 2 of them buggered off home, then I wouldn't be happy either.
It doesn't matter if OP rents from a HA or a private landlord, if someone's committed to do work in your home, its reasonable to expect it to be completed when you've been told it will.
wardrobess · 01/09/2022 12:12
I pay full rent £480 a month
Being a housing association tenant or private or bought house doesn't mean you should be messed around.
If you had paid £1000 to builders and they didn't do the job on the day you said you wouldn't be angry ?
Oh that's fine just come back whenever...doubt it
BuildersTeaMaker · 01/09/2022 12:12
Building work is a nightmare currently. Trades are in short supply, so any issues with delays in one trade, or illness, or even planned holidays has a massive knock on. Project planning is virtually a waste of time. We are on the 12 iteration of my critical milestones in 16 weeks. My job was estimated as 8-10 weeks, were 16 weeks in and at this rate I think we’ve 6-8 weeks more.
most of time no one is on site at all, or maybe 1 person. I then get flurries of 3-4 days when stuff moves ahead because the stars align or something. I get people coming in on Saturdays or Sundays or bank hols to try to get jobs done- a few of my trades bods are exhausted and working really stupid hours.
I have not been able to use my kitchen now for 4 weeks. It wasn’t planned that my kitchen would be out of use at all. The roof needed replacing. Not the ceiling. Roof came off. Roofer cancels At last minute on day he should start. . Roof leaked in heavy downpour next day. Ceiling and walls damaged. Ceiling started to be pulled down . Possible asbestos found. Wait for test results - no asbestos. Ceiling pulled down. Roofer goes completely awol . Roof leaks again with more damage. Roof now on, but electrics have shorted due to water leaks and electricians on hols till next week. Still no ceiling, crap falling down all over kitchen, and room (which is my open plan kitchen, dining, lounge) smells of Damp and all windows covered with tarps until gutters fitted next week. So can’t use lounge either.
and so it goes on. My builder project company has been left out of pocket by their tried and trusted roofer going awol. Builder is furious and very frustrated. Roofer was paid by my builder for materials and is trying to get the money back. The roofer has worked reliably with my builder for 5 years, my builder thinks he is making a packet of picking up last minute panic jobs where other roofers fail to show up.
put bluntly, it’s a shit show for everyone. Sorry you’re in the mess…I know how it feels…but most of it is just beyond anyones control given covid, brexit and lack of skills investment - all of which sits with the government to sort.
as people keep saying to me, try to focus on what it’ll be like once done. You will get there. You need to keep the trades that do show up on side and bite back your frustrations. Pissing them off could mean they just walk and then you’re incurring even more delays.
WonkasBooboofixer · 01/09/2022 12:13
Hi I have actually managed the kind of project that you are part of. You won't have been told about storage if you just have a standard home with an average amount of belongings it cost hundreds of pounds per household and not everyone gets it. Give your liaison officer a call about the delay to the plastering - be polite and nice if you gob off at her you can expect to wait the full 8 days.
Yes the wires are bare but they will be safe. They have a fixed amount of time to complete the project for the
HA it will get done.
BuildersTeaMaker · 01/09/2022 12:21
I should also add, talk to your property mamangment/landlord about compensation for storage
get them, or. Yielding project mama gets if you know who they are, to give you a project plan with critical milestones- okays I said it’s a moving target right now, but at least they’ll know you are trying to get some insight over what’s happening when . Make sure they know, in a polite way, the impact it has on you and urgency.
for instance, I stated clearly to builders that roofs and ceiling had to be in place, water tight and insulated before 15th September. As that’s when I usually have to put heating on - and at prices of energy I can t afford to heat fresh air I can see through my joists where there is still no ceiling or insulation. I’ve told them I have visitors at end September and kitchen must be fixed and redecorated and habitable by then.
YelloCar · 01/09/2022 12:21
I sympathise with the building works. It’s a stressful time. But it sounds pretty average unfortunately.
First of all she didn't tell me I could get my things put into storage.
Who is ‘she’? It isn’t really anyone else’s responsibility to decide what to do about your belongings.
