To say DS won't comply with school uniform?

For context, school has been terrible about communication so far - not responding to any emails, cancelling a registration day only an hour in advance, etc.

I checked the uniform policy - nothing on website. On the uniform retailer page, there were guidelines, but nothing about boys' trousers and nothing for sale, so I figured there were no restrictions. I bought DS some plain trousers over the summer.

It's now about a week before school starts and a school Whatsapp has been set up. I asked about the uniform just to make sure and a parent with a child already enrolled has replied saying they're only allowed to wear grey uniform trousers from Next or M&S.

It’s too late to return what I bought and I don’t have the funds to buy all new clothes simply because school didn’t bother to tell parents the uniform.

AIBU to send him in in what I bought because there is no information stating differently?

there is no school phone

Really???
Have you not been anywhere near the school yet? If you you've seen it did you not notice what the kids were wearing?

MissPankhurst · 31/08/2022 09:34

You don't have to send him to that school but as it's been rated "outstanding" I guess you want to do so.

One of the reasons, it will be outstanding might be because they enforce rules. If you are going to be so petty-refusing to swap or buy a cheap pair-then give up his place at the school and let another child have it it.

Otherwise, obey their not unreasonable rule and get him a pair of grey trousers. Asda and Sainsbury's have them-not to mention Amazon and Ebay.
Don't be a twat.

knackeredagain · 31/08/2022 09:35

It’s not how parents react, it’s how schools react. Uniform policies are ridiculous - but especially in ‘outstanding’ schools, teachers often get hung up on them. One of my kids was out in exclusion for having the wrong haircut.

Enko · 31/08/2022 09:35

I agree it's a pain to learn about uniform when you are not familiar with it. However as a mother who did this it would never have occurred to me to guess. Exactly because it was unfamiliar to me.

I struggle to see how a outstanding school 20 mins away from your house.....in London. Has
No telephone number available.
No uniform code
No pictures of their children on their website.

Unusual for a outstanding primary school in London to have that wide a intake.

With regard to the trousers IMO you need to buy some grey ones. Like said before on the thread. Sell the others on ebay or vinted if you can't return them.

thewatermeloncarriedbybaby · 31/08/2022 09:36

I would think you'd be fine with black trousers. Our primary states "dark grey/charcoal" for trousers and skirts, but lots of children wear light grey or black and no one bats an eyelid. Some also wear a different colour of cardigan/jumper (navy instead of royal blue) and no one seems to care, including the children.

Namechangehereandnow · 31/08/2022 09:36

Literally the most bizarre thread - never in my life have I come across a school that doesn’t have a phone number and doesn’t give explicit uniform rules 🤷‍♀️ I think all is not as it seems 🤔

unicormb · 31/08/2022 09:36

Baffled that people on here are certain that the six week holiday is 'half term'. Half term is the week holiday halfway through a term. Hence the name half term. Summer, Christmas and Easter are full term breaks, and therefore longer. Just because 'everybody calls it half term' doesn't mean it's correct. Lots of people think respite is actually called 'rest bite' and just because enough people are ignorant enough to think that it doesn't mean it's true.

Cantstandbullshit · 31/08/2022 09:36

Christmasiscominghohoho · 31/08/2022 09:25

I think anyone can call it whatever they like.

everyone calls it half term round here. It doesn’t make any difference.

The staff still are not in the office as they are on holiday!

You’re not making any sense, the other PP is right and it’s in the name, half term break is in the middle of the term not at the end of the school year.

PrtScn · 31/08/2022 09:37

I’ve never seeen a school uniform with grey trousers, it’s all black around here.
personally I’d just send him in with black trousers if it’s primary school. Then pick up some grey trousers IF they are strict with uniform policy. Pointless getting grey if there’s a mix of black/grey trousers, especially as they grow quite fast that age.

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 09:37

@Underhisi

If there are no specific uniform trousers then any brand will do.

Any colour won't though.

Where on earth do you live that people call the summer holidays half term, no one does that. It's stupid and makes no sense at all. Of course you can call it what you like but you're still wrong

It's hard to generalise about uniform policy as ayone who has children at different schools an under different HTs must know, also if you aren't from the UK how would you know if the school website doesn't say

Out of interest I've just had a look at the website of my local primary school, the uniform information is over 2 years out of date so no use at all to a new parent. Not all schools are good at communicating

unicormb · 31/08/2022 09:37

Re: OP.

Just buy him some grey trousers.

Cantstandbullshit · 31/08/2022 09:38

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:27

^And I live in central London, there are lots of schools and I live 20 minutes away from this one not in the typical catchment area, so haven't seen students on the school run.

Hahaha the more I ready your posts the more convinced I am you’re one of those trolls hoping your fake story gets picked up by the daily mail.

Yesh you know nothing about the school except it is outstanding, yeah makes sense.

Abraxan · 31/08/2022 09:39

Schools must provide a contact telephone number on their website. It's a legal government requirement.

To say DS won't comply with school uniform?
HailAdrian · 31/08/2022 09:39

KyaClark · 31/08/2022 09:13

I've only ever bought my son black trousers. I had no idea it's "usually" grey.

Same

Topgub · 31/08/2022 09:39

Jeeze you're all so serious.

Riled up about wrong coloured trousers and what to call holidays.

No one here says half term at all. They're all just school holidays.

Summer, Easter Christmas or are the fucking schools aff again?!!!

viques · 31/08/2022 09:40

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:18

OP, on the website, when you see pictures of children, what colour trousers are they wearing? Doesn’t the uniform policy specify colour at all?

I looked all over the website and the pictures are all either of the kids sitting at desks or a big all-school photo that I tried to zoom into but it was too grainy to make out what they were wearing. I tried it!

The policy stated nothing on colour so I assumed there was no rule. I don't magically know the standard colour is grey!

It’s a primary school, surely you have walked past it at playtime/ home time and seen the children playing/ walking home?

and why blue trousers? I can understand black, very common as a uniform colour, but BLUE?

Enko · 31/08/2022 09:41

What maintained schools most publish online..

your school's postal address. your school's telephone number. the name of the member of staff who deals with queries from parents and other members of the public. the name and contact details of your special educational needs co-ordinator ( SENCO ), unless you're a special school.

What academies, free schools and colleges should publish online

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:42

To the people doubting what I'm saying - I would give the school name and website and let you see for yourself, but that would be outing.

If that many people are seeing the situation as ridiculous, then I agree and take it to mean it is unacceptable.

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:23

You bought blue over grey for some reason too.

FFS. The reason is that they didn't TELL parents to buy grey.

Tbf to OP she isn't from the UK, she reasonably doesn't know most schools do grey or black as standard.

Can you return what you've brought? Otherwise I'd send him in in black as its more typical and explain nas you couldn't find the info that is what you guessed at and you'll buy grey as and when you can. Then I'd look online in Vinted or in the local charity shops and get grey ones as and when you can.

Oysterbabe · 31/08/2022 09:44

It's crazy to buy trousers in any random colour without checking first. You should have asked other mums before at least, some of them will have older siblings in the school. I'd put money on the information being available on the school website. You can't send him in the wrong colour trousers.

HowzAboutIt · 31/08/2022 09:44

@LegoVsFoot Name the school on here. It is hardly going to harm it, just means us MNetters can find the number for you. And shut the "troll hunters" up if this is a real thread

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 09:44

Can you return what you've brought?

OP does not want to do this. That's the whole point of the thread. OP wants to tell school her child will not comply. OP is being utterly fucking ridiculous.

Frances658 · 31/08/2022 09:45

Your son is complying with the uniform policy, because as they don't state what colour trousers are acceptable, any colour of school trousers must be acceptable. If anyone at school pulls you up on this (which I suspect they won't), just tell them that. Ignore the ridiculous parent on the WhatsApp group (may as well start ignoring now, you're going to need lots of practice in that!), they're just being an arse. There's no way a school can enforce certain brands of trouser only, and even if they could, it would need to be in the published policy.

thenightsky · 31/08/2022 09:45

Where on earth do you live that people call the summer holidays half term

Yes, this. Half term is when term is halfway through! DH calls every school holiday half term. It does my head in.
