To say DS won't comply with school uniform?

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 08:55

For context, school has been terrible about communication so far - not responding to any emails, cancelling a registration day only an hour in advance, etc.

I checked the uniform policy - nothing on website. On the uniform retailer page, there were guidelines, but nothing about boys' trousers and nothing for sale, so I figured there were no restrictions. I bought DS some plain trousers over the summer.

It's now about a week before school starts and a school Whatsapp has been set up. I asked about the uniform just to make sure and a parent with a child already enrolled has replied saying they're only allowed to wear grey uniform trousers from Next or M&S.

It’s too late to return what I bought and I don’t have the funds to buy all new clothes simply because school didn’t bother to tell parents the uniform.

AIBU to send him in in what I bought because there is no information stating differently?

Most uniforms are grey by standard.

did you look at their website at the pictures of the kids already on there to see what colour they wore?

Just return the black and get grey. I presume you didn’t take the tag off as you wasn’t sure

Soubriquet · 31/08/2022 09:12

Exchange them for grey. I’m surprised you bought blue and black. Primary schools trousers are usually grey

Christmasiscominghohoho · 31/08/2022 09:12

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:09

There was uniform info but trousers not mentioned
Not from the UK so not familiar with uniforms
As mentioned there is no school phone number and emails are not answered

It’s half term. Of course most emails won’t get answered.

Hugasauras · 31/08/2022 09:10

Do you have any clothes from M&S or Next? Cut off the label and sew it onto the trousers so he can show them Grin

But yes that's incredibly annoying. If they want specific things then they need to actually, you know, tell parents about them.

They are the WRONG COLOUR.

Houseplantmad · 31/08/2022 09:13

Don’t send him in black or blue trousers.
Emails won’t be answered during the holidays. Staff are back in my area on Thursday. They may have some spares in school they can give/loan you. Otherwise I’d try a local charity shop or Vinted or a supermarket. One pair is enough to start with as you can wash and dry each day at the moment and then buy more when you can afford to.

KyaClark · 31/08/2022 09:13

I've only ever bought my son black trousers. I had no idea it's "usually" grey.

It's summer break, not half term. And emails haven't been answered since he was accepted to the school well before school broke up.

Surely there’s photos on the website showing the children in their school uniform? You can’t send your child in in the wrong colour trousers but I’m absolutely sure those trousers could be from any supermarket and the nonsense about Next or M&S sounds like BS.

School offices tend to close over the summer holiday. Was there not any information prior to the summer when you were informed of your place? I also can't believe the school doesn't have a phone number? Are you talking about a UK school?

ilovesooty · 31/08/2022 09:15

Don't send him in the wrong colour. Not fair on him.

Totally depends on the school - I think most are grey (just based on what is in the shops), but of the two senior schools in our area, one is black and one is blue. Massively annoying as they are much harder to find.

OP, on the website, when you see pictures of children, what colour trousers are they wearing? Doesn’t the uniform policy specify colour at all?

Denny53 · 31/08/2022 09:16

I’d try selling the wrong colour ones you have bought, then buy some supermarket grey ones. There not expensive anyway. They definitely won’t check which shop they are from Please don’t send him in the wrong colour ones

What are you talking about?!

if you are in the UK then it’s the 6 week half term. The staff are not working in the office at the moment as they are on break.

You could of went up the school if they didn’t answer your emails.

Ragruggers · 31/08/2022 09:18

I suggest you put a want on Facebook for school grey trousers.Someone will most likely gift you a couple of outgrown ones.Any supermarket has them .

girlmom21 · 31/08/2022 09:18

Are you saying you've never seen a child in school uniform, the website has no pictures etc? Come on - there's buying a style that's slightly different but you bought two colours that are wrong. I get that you bought black if you genuinely had no clue but why blue? They're loads harder to find than grey!

Sswhinesthebest · 31/08/2022 09:18

You can exchange for longer than the period you can get a refund.

RiftGibbon · 31/08/2022 09:18

If its not published on the website, and a list hasn't been distributed, then there isn't anything they can say about it being wrong.

If its primary the kids won't care about the colour (thought some may be more 'fashion conscious by y5), and nobody will notice what brand the trousers are.

However, if you have the receipt you could try changing the trousers for grey.

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:18

OP, on the website, when you see pictures of children, what colour trousers are they wearing? Doesn’t the uniform policy specify colour at all?

I looked all over the website and the pictures are all either of the kids sitting at desks or a big all-school photo that I tried to zoom into but it was too grainy to make out what they were wearing. I tried it!

The policy stated nothing on colour so I assumed there was no rule. I don't magically know the standard colour is grey!

Well, it’s been the school holidays so when did you try to contact them? Why on earth did you buy blue trousers?
YABU. Buy him school uniform.

milkysmum · 31/08/2022 09:20

You need to just go to a local supermarket and pick up some grey trousers. Then either return the others or try and sell them on. Please don't send him in the wrong colour.

NLondondiva · 31/08/2022 09:20

I know it’s massively frustrating when schools don’t reply to emails etc and I get that you are feeling really annoyed with them. However, you do sound a bit like you are now determined to stay annoyed and to be difficult in return - making a point by sending your son in the wrong colour trousers when you could get some from Amazon for under a tenner.
Honestly, I’d try and take a step back and consider that your son is going to at this school for a good few years so if you can start with a positive attitude and a good relationship with the staff it will make it a lot less stressful for you, and, importantly, for your son.

Creativecrafts · 31/08/2022 09:20

I find it very odd that you haven't checked what colour trousers are worn. Even without a comprehensive uniform list, the boys shown on the website will be wearing grey trousers.

Just buy him some standard grey ones from a supermarket. It's hard to believe that you can't afford a couple of pairs of trousers, to be honest.

Sending him in the wrong colour will make a stressful event such as starting a new school even worse for him.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 09:21

My kids primary school uniform was officially grey.

No one really followed it.

I cant believe folk are saying don't send him in black like anyone will actually care

🤣

How can it be half term when the term ended in July? Half term is October/February/may, then there is the Christmas end of term break, Easter end of term break and summer end of term break

Half term is (usually) a one week holiday halfway through a term ie October, February and May. OP is correct that it is Summer Break, or Summer Holiday.

The other breaks between terms are at Easter and Christmas. These again are not half-terms.
