To say DS won't comply with school uniform?

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 08:55

For context, school has been terrible about communication so far - not responding to any emails, cancelling a registration day only an hour in advance, etc.

I checked the uniform policy - nothing on website. On the uniform retailer page, there were guidelines, but nothing about boys' trousers and nothing for sale, so I figured there were no restrictions. I bought DS some plain trousers over the summer.

It's now about a week before school starts and a school Whatsapp has been set up. I asked about the uniform just to make sure and a parent with a child already enrolled has replied saying they're only allowed to wear grey uniform trousers from Next or M&S.

It’s too late to return what I bought and I don’t have the funds to buy all new clothes simply because school didn’t bother to tell parents the uniform.

AIBU to send him in in what I bought because there is no information stating differently?

Did you not see any kids on the school website?

suzyscat · 31/08/2022 09:28

Is there really no school phone number? Even on the website.

I know the office isn't staffed all summer so not helpful, but I find it hard to believe their is no phone number for a school.

I'm afraid you've got to suck this one up. It's not your fault as such but you took a risk and it didn't pay off this time. If you can't return the ones you bought sell them on eBay/ Facebook market place. You could be someone's last minute uniform panic hero.

Get him a cheap pair of grey ones asap from Aldi or similar, you can buy another pair another month, or if that's out of reach rn have a look at any school Facebook pages/ marketplace/ local WhatsApp groups as people often give away or sell on old uniform bits, book bags etc. there's buy nothing pages too. If you can find a phone number for the school they may have old lost property or similar that could be borrowed until you can get your own.

Another time you could Google the school and do an image search, if there's no pictures of the kids on their website, you often get pictures of school kids in the local press etc and could see the uniform colours that way.

Good luck!

Confuzzlediddled · 31/08/2022 09:28

OP I would just go to Asda or Tesco, they have grey trousers for about £4 a pair, easier than stressing over it

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:03

It's primary school
They're not grey, I bought blue and black
I didn't misplace any information, there wasn't anything written
The mum also said the trousers used to be available on the website but aren't anymore 'and school hasn't offered any information on this'
Lots of other parents had questions about last minute buying so no one had any guidelines, it wasn't just me

Is it a brand new school that you had Monisha about their school colors?

Surely you’ve been looking at the school for a while, been there on tours, seen their students etc so why would you buy blue trousers?

Yes the school should communicate better but common, you just decide to buy blue based on what? Tossing a coin?

Topgub · 31/08/2022 09:28

@converseandjeans

Why does she?

WhereshouldIgo · 31/08/2022 09:28

What school doesn’t have their phone number listed??? Our has main number plus other numbers for main contacts, and teacher email addresses.
it bizarre that they don’t tell you the uniform?

Is that other parent correct?sounds like she might be making up her own rules…
our primary school day is black or grey shirts skirts or trousers. They don’t care where from

DappledThings · 31/08/2022 09:29

Half term referring to any school holidays has only appeared in the last few years.
And makes no sense. Half term, as in halfway through the term. Calling all holidays half term is just ridiculous. I've heard people call the Easter holiday half term which is silly enough, never heard anyone call the whole summer break half term.

Mind you Kent schools have started calling them terms 1-6 instead of 1-3 so each half term is a term. But they still call the October, February and May week long breaks half term. So they want to call it the holiday half way through the term but at the end of the term. Annoying.

Back, almost, to the point of the thread but I've never even seen blue school trousers.

maranella · 31/08/2022 09:29

Why did you buy blue and black when he needs grey?

I would get some grey ones. They are very inexpensive if you go to a supermarket. If you make him go in wearing blue and black when every other kid in the school is wearing grey he'll stand out and he'll hate it. Kids like to blend in. You made a mistake and you need to fix it, not do a flounce.

Flowers It’s a pita kids starting school in a country you’re not from; there’s so much that you’re assumed to know- you don’t know what you don’t know 💁🏻‍♀️ I sent mine in without food on their first day in Australia. I didn’t know to get school lunch you had to send them in with a brown paper bag with their order written on it and the exact cash inside- how would I?

Thank you! It is stressful, this is my first time dealing with primary school so it's all a bit nervewracking! I feel like it's my own first day at school all over again 🤦🏽‍♀️

They cannot specify retailers and how would they check anyway.

As long as they are grey you will be fine.

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 09:31

That because you are acting like a child. You don't need to stamp your feet and shout that you didn't know. You can take the new information you have and sort it out.

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:09

There was uniform info but trousers not mentioned
Not from the UK so not familiar with uniforms
As mentioned there is no school phone number and emails are not answered

What type of school does not have a phone number listed on their website? And this school is rated outstanding?

were there no pictures of students on the school website?

Underhisi · 31/08/2022 09:31

If there are no specific uniform trousers then any brand will do.

This! It doesn't make sense at all. Also why blue? That is such an odd color.

DappledThings · 31/08/2022 09:32

I’m intrigued how a class WhatsApp group has been set up already. Did you give your permission to have your details shared
We have had one for those about to start reception since July. There was a picnic event for parents and children and one of the parents set it up then asking everyone if they wanted to be included.

Abraxan · 31/08/2022 09:32

I'm surprised there is no school telephone number. Never known that.

Do they list any other forms of communication, bar the main email? Social media accounts? Year group emails? We have all of the above, all are monitored on and off throughout the holidays though not daily.

Re the poster and half term. It isn't half term. It's the summer holidays. There are three half terms in an academic year in England - at the end of October, mid February and end of May. At Christmas and Easter there are school holidays (Christmas holiday, Easter holiday) and then in the summer there is the longer break.

School websites are filled with pictures of kids.

These days many have stopped adding photographs of the actual children at their school, having moved to online password protected learning journals, etc. The whole photo permissions thing, when the child is at the school and then again when they leave, is often too much hassle to keep up with. I maintain our website and almost all of the photographs are stock photos. I, along with our head, selected ones which most closely reflected our uniform and children but they aren't exact.

We do have a uniform page though, and we send the list out as part of the general welcome to school pack.

knackeredagain · 31/08/2022 09:32

There’s still time to exchange them. Or if they have been given by a well-meaning family member or friend, to source some in the right colour.

Somewhere down the line, a mistake has happened. It’s not the end of the world. It happens, and can be easily remedied.

But no, I wouldn’t send him in the wrong colour trousers.

Sidisawetlettuce · 31/08/2022 09:32

Christmasiscominghohoho · 31/08/2022 09:17

What are you talking about?!

if you are in the UK then it’s the 6 week half term. The staff are not working in the office at the moment as they are on break.

You could of went up the school if they didn’t answer your emails.

Half terms last one week usually, and are occur halfway through a term. October/February/May. This is the 6 week Summer break. What are YOU on about?

Tulipvase · 31/08/2022 09:32

My school wouldn’t care if he wore the black trousers, certainly not for a few days at least. Just explain when you drop him off.

HowzAboutIt · 31/08/2022 09:32

@Christmasiscominghohoho I have literally never met anyone who calls the Summer Holidays "half term". It is the end of the school year, summer break, school holidays etc ... Which term is it half way though 🤔Bizarre.

@LegoVsFoot - can the other mum link the grey trousers info to you? If not, just put him in black or buy cheap grey ones from Asda - no one will know!

Topgub · 31/08/2022 09:32

Christ if this is how parents react at the idea of kids not conforming no wonder bullying is so bad.

Cantstandbullshit · 31/08/2022 09:33

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 09:18

OP, on the website, when you see pictures of children, what colour trousers are they wearing? Doesn’t the uniform policy specify colour at all?

I looked all over the website and the pictures are all either of the kids sitting at desks or a big all-school photo that I tried to zoom into but it was too grainy to make out what they were wearing. I tried it!

The policy stated nothing on colour so I assumed there was no rule. I don't magically know the standard colour is grey!

Based on this post I conclude this is a troll post. Really?

I would say you are correct!

lunar1 · 31/08/2022 09:33

You need to go to the cheapest local supermarket and buy some grey trousers. The only person who will suffer otherwise is your DS.

They are the most common colour so available really cheaply, you probably paid quite a bit more for blue.

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2022 09:34

Have you checked with parents in the group what else they need to take? Are you having a staggered start so not doing full days and possibly not all starting on the same day?

Most schools have inset days at the start of this term to do safeguarding training etc so the office maybe open before your little one goes in, so hopefully they will be in contact soon.

Can’t believe they don’t have a phone number, who does OFSTED call 😀
