To say DS won't comply with school uniform?

LegoVsFoot · 31/08/2022 08:55

For context, school has been terrible about communication so far - not responding to any emails, cancelling a registration day only an hour in advance, etc.

I checked the uniform policy - nothing on website. On the uniform retailer page, there were guidelines, but nothing about boys' trousers and nothing for sale, so I figured there were no restrictions. I bought DS some plain trousers over the summer.

It's now about a week before school starts and a school Whatsapp has been set up. I asked about the uniform just to make sure and a parent with a child already enrolled has replied saying they're only allowed to wear grey uniform trousers from Next or M&S.

It’s too late to return what I bought and I don’t have the funds to buy all new clothes simply because school didn’t bother to tell parents the uniform.

AIBU to send him in in what I bought because there is no information stating differently?

@mattressspring

That seems like a complete ott reaction

It would never occur to me that my child would be bullied for the wrong colour trousers

its really sad you're so terrified of being different

My kid asked for a t-shirt at 350 quid the other week cause his mates had 1.

He was told to beat it.

Someone better call ss

🙄

LockAqua · 31/08/2022 13:05

Frankly the school has a uniform policy and your DS will need to comply. Specifying a pair of grey trousers is hardly unreasonable.

The DCs’ school is much more prescriptive- it’s grey shorts which have to be purchased from the school outfitter for the boys all year round until year 6. Non compliance is simply not tolerated.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:06

@LockAqua

How would they enforce it?

spirit20 · 31/08/2022 13:07

I work in a school and I think it would be quite bizarre, and completely inappropriate, for a school to specify a uniform has to come from two generic brand stores (sometimes they might say it has to come from a specially chosen independent supplier who they work with to design the blazer/tie etc. but not a large scale commercial chain store..). As long as it's the correct colour, there shouldn't be a problem.

LockAqua · 31/08/2022 13:09

@Topgub

At the DCs’ school detentions are given for non-compliance right from reception. Ultimately a DC would be sent home for repeated refusal to comply.

LockAqua · 31/08/2022 13:10

At the DCs’ school even an undone top button or blazer removed without permission is automatic detention, never mind refusal to wear the uniform at all!

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2022 13:11

@LockAqua is that a Primary School?

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 13:12

My reaction was to the fact that you said it would be for school to deal with, there was no empathy for a child.

its really sad you're so terrified of being different

Oh fuck. I'm not terrified of anything, and you don't know me at all. I am different. Having lived through school as 'different' I know only too well how awful it can be. It's very different now I'm an adult, but like I said, empathy.

My kid asked for a t-shirt at 350 quid the other week cause his mates had 1.

Not quite sure what this has to do with anything. Do you want some sort of s prize for not buying a £350 t shirt which bear no relation to a £5 pair of school trousers?

gogohmm · 31/08/2022 13:12

Take the trousers you bought back to the shop and explain - most will let you exchange. Grey is the normal school uniform trouser colour

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:13

@LockAqua

That's absolutely ridiculous.

I'd kick up shit. No chance would I be putting up with that.

What if your child has sensory issues?

Can’t believe we’re 13 pages in and still going, on a thread which is unbelievable but also very easily sorted.

Has anyone else ever come across a school with no contact phone number, and no uniform policy online, or in any literature given out to new parents?

The situation is very easily remedied but OP continues to refrain from this.

OP never posted for help though: I think Op has got exactly what they wanted from this thread.

LockAqua · 31/08/2022 13:15

@Topgub

Then your DC wouldn’t last long at the school! They believe in a culture of high standards and expectations and no excuses. The vast majority of parents support this and those who aren’t willing to comply are quickly shown the door.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:15

@mattressspring

You misunderstood my point.

I'd expect any school to stamp out and immediately deal with any bullying. That has nothing to do with empathy for the child.

And you misunderstood my point about the t-shirt too.

You think not being different is kept to low cost items?!

Oh dear.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:16

@LockAqua

Shown the door to where?

dreamingbohemian · 31/08/2022 13:17

So you live in central London but can't afford £5 for trousers.

Right.

I didn't misunderstand you at all. Oh are just so determined to be right your crap is escalating. There is nothing wrong with OP taking the bloody trousers back and getting grey ones. We don't have to take a pudding stand for 'differences' over a primary school child trousers. Get a grip.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:19

🤷‍♀️

There's nothing wrong with her not taking them back either.

I wouldnt.

Not on the say so of a mum on WhatsApp.

CecilyP · 31/08/2022 13:20

mattressspring · 31/08/2022 12:05

Are you suggesting children don't get bullied for being different?

Maybe, particularly in girls’ secondary schools! However this is, presumably, reception. Anyway even with uniform, the kids will be wearing different things; boys in trousers or shorts; girls in trousers, shorts, skirts, pinafores and, as it’s still pretty warm in London, gingham dresses. Amongst that lot, I doubt if black rather than grey trousers would be all that noticeable.

Topgub · 31/08/2022 13:21

@CecilyP

Exactly!

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2022 13:22

@LockAqua are you saying a child will be permanently excluded if they wore the wrong uniform

CecilyP · 31/08/2022 13:24

newbiename · 31/08/2022 11:58

You should say the school name. Not outing unless your child is the only one going there.
Prove some if these PPs wrong who are convinced you didn't look properly .

Yeah it really wouldn’t be outing at all. You really wouldn’t be the only confused non-British parent with a child starting there shortly.

TheOrigRights · 31/08/2022 13:27

This is either a private school or a State school which is not conforming to the government statutory guidance.
If the former then it's not really relevant to the OP's position and if the latter then you could complain.

cansu · 31/08/2022 13:27

Surely the colour was obvious. There would have been pics on the website of the kids. Very odd to buy two random colours. Exchange for grey. Shop irrelevant but colour will matter

Look we aren't really owed a name.of the school. Theres no way to know any thread is real

If it bothers you dont post/invest your time and thoughts. Take responsibility for your own risk you chose to take when responding.
