To be actually really worried about you? NHS related

As a highly skilled NHS nurse of 15 years I had to leave my job due to the stress and not being able to provide the care I wanted to, I was burnt out following covid (my mum died), I have definaly save a fair few lifes in my clinical time, I loved my job and I was good at it (emergency department background). Reading the posts on MN has really upset me recently, the disrespect, dislike and darn right hatred for healthcare professionals really worries me. My friends are on their knees and this abuse doesn't help, people are getting crap care because there is no staff and this awful attitude is just adding fuel to the fire. I'm really worried about you, me and our families future healthcare.

People talk like this has only just started happening. There always been a mixture of good and poor care in the NHS. I remember in the 1980s my grandmother had dementia and had to go into hospital after a fall. When my mum went to visit, it was a cold day and they'd put her at the bottom of the ward with the curtains closed to the rest of the ward and opened all the windows round her. Presumably to see her off. Her care was so awful that my mum demanded her to be taken back to mums house and the doctors refused to let her go. Obviously my mum got her way andshe lived another 5 years.
In the early 2000s, my friends mum had dementia and was in hospital. My friend had to go away in business for a couple of days and went to see her as soon as she got back. Her tongue was black because no one had given her water.
I could tell you loads of stories spanning many years. Nothing to do with lack of money, staff shortages or covid. Just poor care and poor management.
It to balance that, I had an operation that transformed my life so I'm very grateful to the nhs and the wonderful things they can do.

If it wasn't for the wonderful care amd treatment I received with my tumour taken out (9 days in hospital )and my partners fantastic care and treatment with his cancer and chemo .I don't know where we would be thank god for the nhs

crabcakesalad · 31/08/2022 02:32

@Trying20 was this young lad disgusting? www.independent.co.uk/news/health/nhs-999-patient-death-sickle-cell-b1825992.html he died after being neglected and then calling 999 from his hospital bed.

I'm inferring from your comment that you are either male or not had children? Experiencing maternity care changed how I saw the NHS.

It is so good to hear about wonderful and fantastic care. It gives some hope.

I hope you are both doing well now and on the

I was getting "crap care" in A&E BECAUSE of the crap nurses. Humanoid uncaring creatures. There were plenty of them around and not one with a chance to give me some pain relief (apparently ain't a moment for that in the 13h I was there) or triage despite me being in acute visible distress.

Only strange how it all appeared (plus a cup of sweet tea, somewhere to lie down on, my first triage and even a Doctor ) when I called for an ambulance from the waiting room...

It's not finance that's the issue with the NHS - it's the fact that no one cares! Lessons will be learnt and all that....

Privatise. The crap nurses would lose their jobs and everyone would benefit (including the remaining employees).

I AGREE!. a lot of nurses simply do not care!. I waa in hospiyal for a month after a kidney transplant and some nurses are so workshy. I once was crying with chest pain and was not given paracetamol for 2 hrs!. Lots of other things happened
It was horrific. I find the phillipimo nurses amazing. They get on with things and ate very efficient!.

Both doing fine results for partner come in soon .I will add doctors failed to diagnose my tumour 3 times now .so I've had good and bad experiences but on the whole I'm eternally grateful to the NHS. My sons been to great ormand St a fair few times as well and honestly I'm in awe .you're all so amazing

RobertSmithsLipstick · 31/08/2022 02:40

I've had and seen the best of care, and the very worst of it.

Bexblue · 31/08/2022 02:48

Unfortunately and it was always be this way private or not .other people think they are entitled and all me me me and it takes the resources and staff away from other people .I wasn't entitled but while I was very high on morphine for the 9 days .I pressed my buzzer every rime I needed a drink (super polite about it but just didn't know any better .didn't realise I could get out of bed to get it myself ) but it takes staff away from others .they explained to me I could but just come out of major surgery so I forgot .point being I drained resources but wasn't even aware really I was doing it half the time .I saw visitors pester a nurse like every 5 mins over tiny things .

Onceuponatimethen · 31/08/2022 02:49

I’ve had excellent care - e.g. recently in A&E with dd. Staff were incredibly kind and excellent medically though the wait was gruelling (over 9 hours to be seen by the specialist).

Also had dreadful care - wrongly not advised by hospital specialist to have surgery before ttc. Not doing this may have led to a condition one of my dc has. Not diagnosed with a condition for years that GP blood tests clearly showed I had. Dreadful care for a mmc which I got an apology for. I’m therefore not grateful for the NHS in its current form.

Bexblue · 31/08/2022 02:51

Mrs Haversham. You should always be grateful .stuff happens that's life .ull miss it when it's gone and you have to pay to breathe

Don't blame the patients, blame the government who are decimating our NHS & privatising it through the back door. We have a right to be treated well by the NHS & a right to speak up when we aren't getting the treatment we expect. Unless everyone speaks up nothing will change, hospital staff need to speak up as well & feed the message back up the chain that unless things change then staff will leave & there will be nobody left to treat patients.

Lol trying .I think we should sing the nhs s praises .and cling onto it by our fingernails .we've all had bad experiences. But by and large we should all be eternally grateful

Bexblue · 31/08/2022 03:04

Trying 20 I couldn't agree more .and we should blame the general public as much as in part blame the people up top .everyone's far too intitled .I drained staff resources admittedly ( I was so high I barely knew my name ).but I saw some dreadful bratty people who thought the staff owed them diamonds and jewels .we should all look at ourselves as we helped to drain it

Bexblue · 31/08/2022 03:05

There's a difference between not getting the treatment deserved and a patient having a full blown hissy fit .because the pretentious prat couldn't get a cup of tea when he wanted and I've seen worse. We need to cut the nhs some serious slack

TheClogLady · 31/08/2022 02:11

my family’s recent experience (paediatric cancer care, big teaching hospital) has been nothing short of excellent.

when the NHS is at it’s best, it’s still utterly brilliant. I’m beyond grateful.

But why do you want to have to feel grateful? Why shouldn't a wealthy western democracy provide adequate medical care in the 21st Century? Oh wait for many people it is failing badly at the moment precisely because our expectations are so low that we express gratitude for the most basic level of care our taxes/government borrowing have funded.

I certainly don't want outstanding care, just civility would do, in some cases.
