To feel really stupid being in A&E right now?

I’ve had really severe abdominal cramps and sharp pains that have doubled me over and got progressively worse over the past week.

It started near my belly button but the main pain is now in my lower right side. I feel like I’ve got a stitch/labour pains/trapped wind all at once! Intensified every few minutes.

It hurts when I walk, stand mainly. But the pain is agonising when I stand up from sitting. It comes and goes in pain strength but it always there.

I’ve come to A&E as it’s just not going away but I feel like they’re dismissing me and not taking it seriously, which makes me question whether it is serious at all. Triage said it’s probably a uti and why haven’t i been to gp. But I’m worried if it’s something such as appendicitis then it needs looking at straight away surely?

U have been in pain for several days. Stay and tell them ur in pain and ur struggling with daily tasks. U cant leave without help.

Stand ur ground! X

ShowOfHands · 30/08/2022 20:41

If it is an appendicitis, you're right and it needs checking. I've had three friends who've had an appendicitis and their symptom in common (apart from pain moving from centre to right) was pain on trying to stand/walk. They were all hunched and shuffling on presenting at the GP/hospital.

Just hang on in there and let them assess you properly.

cstx89 · 30/08/2022 20:41

Oh - and I hope u get better soon. Pain is awful! X

custardbear · 30/08/2022 20:42

Good luck but it does sound like if you've had it a week that you could have gone to your GP today, perhaps they're peeved about that?!

I hope whatever it is it gets sorted as it can't be nice - good luck OP

chillipenguin · 30/08/2022 20:43

Don't worry you are there now they'll check you out

StrawberryPot · 30/08/2022 20:44

Well you're there now and clearly need to be seen. But I agree with the previous poster. If you've had it for a week you should have seen your gp.

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2022 20:45

I would explicitly ask why they don’t think it is appendicitis

I would have done but I’ve been in France. I tried to go to a french hospital a couple of days ago but struggled with the language barrier and me feeling quite vulnerable.

I have been on the ferry and train from dover all day today, then broke down in tears when I got here just out of relief.

I’m thinking of just leaving and going to gp in the morn

My first thought was possible appendicitis, it's not silly to want to be seen. Your symptoms are bad enough to warrant a visit. Appendicitis pain starts near the belly button then travels, so it seems a bit blasé of them to say it definitely isn't that!

FlissyPaps · 30/08/2022 20:49

Don’t feel stupid OP. Stay put. & hopefully they find the route cause and get you treated soon x

That would be very silly.

PonyTime · 30/08/2022 20:50

If it's progressively gotten worse why haven't you sought help from your GP?

You're not going to get prioritised with a bad tummy ache

Time wasters are the worst

Agree
hope you’re okay
you have done the right thing

Apl · 30/08/2022 20:50

A&E always sucks, and even the staff are finding it really really hard after the whole pandemic thing. Whether or not you should have gone to GP is irrelevant now, you have symptoms which could be appendicitis or uti or something else and they will assess you and try to help. I’d book in with your GP asap as well, they’ll be less tired and equally able to diagnose a lot of stuff.

Titsywoo · 30/08/2022 20:50

DD had the same 2 months ago and they were lovely at A&E even though it ended up being bad constipation! Hope they sort you out soon.

EarthlyNightshade · 30/08/2022 20:50

I don't see the point in telling people in A&E who are in pain that they "probably" have a UTI.
I was in not that long ago, crying in abdominal pain, they treated me really well - said it "might" be a UTI but that it could be appendicitis. It turned out to be an appendicitis and I was lucky to be treated quickly.
Will they do your bloods?
And good question above - why do they not think it could be an appendicitis?

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2022 20:50

I’d stay now you are there. A and e will have seen far more cases of appendicitis than your gp I suspect.

Dancingfairydreams · 30/08/2022 20:51

Any chance you could be pregnant @Offandonagain ? Sounds very similar to symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy. Reminds me of how mine started, triage tried to dismiss me too....I passed out 20mins later

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2022 20:51

If I’m worried about something in particular, I always ask why they don’t think it is that. It’s very helpful all round I find!

Iliveonahill · 30/08/2022 20:52

Tough for the A&E staff but it sounds like you are in the right place. A GP Would have probably sent you there anyway. It could be gull-stones or appendicitis. Good luck.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 30/08/2022 20:52

I had something that sounds similar, turns out it was stomach ulcers. GP didn't take me seriously, ended up in A&E and they took me seriously and said thank god I ended up there.

She didn’t say it wasn’t that. I’ve only seen triage nurse so far. She just said from my description it’s likely a uti as when she asked if I had blood in my urine I said no but it hurts when I pee.

But she was so dismissive that I didn’t
explain that it’s not the typical burning/pain you get with a uti. It was a pain in my
abdomen/right side.

I wanted to tell her more but the triage is in the waiting room so everyone can hear you!

Good luck OP. My Dad was admitted on Friday for suspected liver failure, but not before having sat on a chair in A & E for nearly 22 hours. He was treated like shit, he was in agony from rheumatoid arthritis, they wouldn't administer insulin (he's diabetic) before talking to his GP next day, and when he asked for a blanket (he was frozen) the nurse erupted at him in fury and told him it wasn't a hotel.

It was horrendous. They literally couldn't have cared less.

You can diagnose OP via your screen yes?

This is exactly what I mean!… I feel really stupid sitting here. The nurse has obviously dismissed me and i’m likely to be waiting all night
