To feel really stupid being in A&E right now?

I’ve had really severe abdominal cramps and sharp pains that have doubled me over and got progressively worse over the past week.

It started near my belly button but the main pain is now in my lower right side. I feel like I’ve got a stitch/labour pains/trapped wind all at once! Intensified every few minutes.

It hurts when I walk, stand mainly. But the pain is agonising when I stand up from sitting. It comes and goes in pain strength but it always there.

I’ve come to A&E as it’s just not going away but I feel like they’re dismissing me and not taking it seriously, which makes me question whether it is serious at all. Triage said it’s probably a uti and why haven’t i been to gp. But I’m worried if it’s something such as appendicitis then it needs looking at straight away surely?

Sounds like when I had kidney stones. Just something to think about. Sorry your in pain

Midpmcoffee · 30/08/2022 21:43

9 minutes ago you posted that you felt daft and thought the nurse had dismissed you.

and 9 mins later…. Bloods and urine sample done?

I know, I’m shocked too.

Does it hurt when you cough op? When I had appendicitis I would get a really sharp pain in my lower right side whenever i coughed. The doctors all did the same test, I think it was called a spring test? They would push down hard where I felt the pain for a few seconds then quickly pull their hand away. If the pain suddenly increases (which it did!) it's a classic sign of appendicitis. This wasn't in the UK though so no idea if that's done here.

BaileySharp · 30/08/2022 21:46

I had something similar when I was pregnant. I went to GP and A&E. In my case A&E did the urine dip and said uti, but it hurt more near the back so I thought maybe kidney infection. I got stronger pain meds and it did eventually get better but I ouldnt believe pain like that could be a uti, I've had uti before that were fine. Hope yours is nothing serious and they are able to help you

Daisy95 · 30/08/2022 21:46

@PonyTime will you shut up, you literally have no idea do you??

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 30/08/2022 21:47

This is how my appendicitis was. A gp dismissed me 4 times.
As they operated they burst before they could get them out. I was quite ill for 2 weeks after.

Slipslops · 30/08/2022 21:47

Please stay. Don’t be fobbed off. I had similar last year, it was really very painful. The triage nurse at minor injuries tried to fob me off too but the senior nurse took one look at me and I was sent straight to the surgical ward at the local hospital. Doctors initially thought it was diverticulitis but a scan confirmed it was appendicitis and so I had an appendectomy that night. I hope you are ok OP. If you need an appendectomy it’s nothing to worry about - and you’ll feel so much better when it’s out. Good luck.

@Cigarettesaftersex1

It's called replying to questions

Odd you don't get that

Another poster asked what she could have done in France

I responded

The Op asked (wanted to seek attention) on AIBU, i and other posters think she is being unreasonable

Some, like yourself, seem to take issue with this, not sure why as it's how online forums work

It is a really worrying state of affairs when the health system is so broken that someone in severe pain is being bashed as a time waster for going to the hospital. To some people on this thread - why aren't you angry at the government, instead of the individuals? OP shouldn't have to wait until she's dying to visit a&e, and she shouldn't have to struggle in a French hospital where they don't understand her and she likely would have been charged out of pocket. If she'd waited til morning and gone to the GP, I highly suspect GP would just send her to a&e!

Stay where you are OP. You've done the right thing. You might have to wait all night, which is appalling in itself, but you don't want to go home and risk becoming critically ill if whatever it is gets worse. I wish you all the best.

LLMS2022 · 30/08/2022 21:49

I have'nt read all of the previous posts, but sounds like it could be appendicitis. When I had it, it started in the middle of my abdo then moved to the right. Might sound silly but my GP made me hop on my right leg and it was excruciating, and he knew for sure then

monkeysox · 30/08/2022 21:49

@Offandonagain don't leave if pain goes it might be appendix popping. Mine did and I had peritonitis.

HalfBloodPrincess · 30/08/2022 21:49

Glad you stayed OP.

My notes from when I had a heart attack say ‘anxiety’ on the triage form. I almost left but bloody glad I didn’t.

Ship · 30/08/2022 21:50

Op you are in the right place. Appendicitis can get very serious and you have many of the symptoms. It’s not going to be a fun night but stay there and make sure you get sorted.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/08/2022 21:52

It could also be related to your pancreas. Don't be fobbed off.

IrisVersicolor · 30/08/2022 21:53

These were my symptoms when I had appendicitis. Pain that starts in the middle and moves down right is typical. I had really bad cramps and couldn’t pee though. The only thing that touched the pain was morphine.

I have to say that they were really nice.

JimmiChoux · 30/08/2022 21:53

Feel well soon @Offandonagain 💐

Darkness22 · 30/08/2022 21:54

Good luck op. Don't let this thread stress you out. You're in the right place.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/08/2022 21:54

Glad they've taken samples now
You've definitely done the right thing
With Severe pain like you have, it could be an infection progressing into sepsis or something on the point of bursting causing peritonitis
I hope you're made comfortable and treatment is started soon

mothertrucking · 30/08/2022 21:55

There are some self righteous replies on this post.

OP don't leave, please stay until you have been properly checked over.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/08/2022 22:02

@Offandonagain
I retired not long ago after a long career as a A&E nurse and triage consultant.
You have persistent and worsening abdominal pain. A&E is the right place to be examined and assessed. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I hope MNHQ bans @PonyTime for their dismissive, dangerously ill-informed and gleefully unpleasant comments.

LarryTrotter · 30/08/2022 22:03

Hopeandlove · 30/08/2022 21:39

I had this and did seek advice from my GP. Told it was everything settling down after a m/c two months before. Then probable UTI. I was struggling to walk and stand and hunched over -bad pain.
Then the GP put me in for a scan saying it was probably an ovarian cyst. 4 hours later I was in A&E -and I wasn't screaming -I was in so much pain I just simply wanted to die. I just didn't care.

They took some bloods -by then I didn't recognise my sister who came to visit me as she was a surgeon in the same hospital. She asked the Head of Surgery to do a 'look see' -I had a burst gangrenous appendix. I was 6 hours in surgery. My parents were told I probably wouldn't make it.

This is awful. So sorry you went through this.

So typical of being a woman though - "oh, you're a woman, it'll be a pregnancy/MC/UTI/ other reproductive related issue"

I'm so glad your sister was there to fight for you.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 30/08/2022 22:11

@Offandonagain

STAY

I won't bore you with all the details, but I went to A&E with suspected appendicitis, I practically ran in. Though several hours before I'd been in agony, I wasn't at that point. I too felt a fraud, 'reception/triage' was cold & dismissive, a few hours later I'd been admitted, had my appendix out and was told I was very lucky I'd gone in when I did as it was on the verge of rupturing septic shite everywhere.

ThirteenLuckyForSome · 30/08/2022 22:13

Personally I'd be going to a+e with those symptoms (and it takes a lot for me to seek medical help!), my dad nearly died from a burst appendix. He actually went to the GPs and was misdiagnosed with a slipped disc as his pain was in his back too. He only survived because he was very fit, he was very poorly for a long time. So I'd stick around and wait to be seen, if they do dismiss your pain and send you away and things don't improve go back. My dad didn't until his burst and it was very nearly curtains for him.

Mum233 · 30/08/2022 22:14

Stay there OP! My mum had a ruptured appendix as she was fobbed off by the GP. Don’t risk it xx
