To feel really stupid being in A&E right now?

Offandonagain · 30/08/2022 20:39

I’ve had really severe abdominal cramps and sharp pains that have doubled me over and got progressively worse over the past week.

It started near my belly button but the main pain is now in my lower right side. I feel like I’ve got a stitch/labour pains/trapped wind all at once! Intensified every few minutes.

It hurts when I walk, stand mainly. But the pain is agonising when I stand up from sitting. It comes and goes in pain strength but it always there.

I’ve come to A&E as it’s just not going away but I feel like they’re dismissing me and not taking it seriously, which makes me question whether it is serious at all. Triage said it’s probably a uti and why haven’t i been to gp. But I’m worried if it’s something such as appendicitis then it needs looking at straight away surely?

DD had the same 2 months ago and they were lovely at A&E even though it ended up being bad constipation! Hope they sort you out soon.

That’s what I’m worried about. That it’s just a complete waste of time

Could it be a cyst on your ovary. I had one and it was queried as appendicitis. It was incredibly painful on moving

Drunkencrow · 30/08/2022 20:59

You are in the right place. Quite typical symptoms for appendicitis but at the same time could be a UTI, could be a twisted ovarian cyst etc. I would wait for a review by the doctor and its likely they will take your bloods. Following that if they ask the surgical team to see you they may consider an ultrasound tomorrow if things still aren't clear. Don't have anything to eat until your review just in case they consider an operation.

LunchBoxPolice · 30/08/2022 21:00

Time wasters are the worst, yes. But I don’t think you can assume the OP is a time waster under the circumstances, sounds like she’s in a lot of pain.

walsphbvc · 30/08/2022 21:01

Stay and get checked OP, I was in A&E around this time last year. I was dismissed as wasting time and not sick enough to be there until they got my last blood test result back which showed a serious problem with my liver, the doctor went from rolling his eyes to visibly panicking in-front of me. I was in and out of hospital for the next 3 months until I was fully better.

The staff are run down and over worked OP. Do not allow them to fob you off. Yes it could “just” be a UTI but you have a right to be seen and you’re waiting your turn like everyone else. Given your update about why you couldn’t see a GP in normal hours, surely it’s understandable how you ended up there. Ask yourself if you’re up A&E lots of times for little things or whether you only go when it’s necessary. I’m pretty sure the answer is that no, you avoid A&E unless absolutely necessary, like most others.

Hope you feel better soon!
Don’t feel bad if it’s nothing serious, just be thankful.

What makes you so sure this is not serious?

But you’ve presumably not been through years of medical school and training to decide that, which is why you’ve come to get an experts opinion as you’re doubled over in pain.
Please wait, let them assess you properly, tell them what you’re worried it might be and they can consider it and get you sorted.

Arbesque · 30/08/2022 21:06

PonyTime · 30/08/2022 20:50

If it's progressively gotten worse why haven't you sought help from your GP?

You're not going to get prioritised with a bad tummy ache

Time wasters are the worst

She hasn't gone in with a sore throat or a pain in her toe. The last time I had bad stomach pain my GPS office told me to call an ambulance. She is not time wasting.

ChunkyLegsandKinderEggs · 30/08/2022 21:06

With those symptoms, a GP would likely send you to a&e anyway. It’s classic suspected appendicitis. Nothing about this is time wasting.

Christ, how seriously patronising are you?

You have not given OP a blood test. You have not tested OP’s urine sample. You have not taken OP’s blood pressure or temperature.

Do not tell someone to leave A&E unless you are an acting doctor on shift who has seen to them and gone through protocol.

OP, please do not listen to this vile idiot. Stay where you are. Yes, you may be waiting a while. Yes, A&E isn’t the nicest of environments and yes, some staff may seem like they’re rolling their eyes. But stay put. It’s better safe than sorry. You came here for a reason. Stay until you are seen. If you require pain relief then ask.

badgerybadgerboo · 30/08/2022 21:08

Well I had a UTI. I went to A&E as the pain was so bad everyone said it sounded like appendicitis.

Triage nurse was rude, cold, eye rolled, tutted and humiliated me. Declaring it a UTI.

She made me feel like shit.

Not as shit as she felt when I later returned with Sepsis though......

Get well soon OP. Pain is pain.

Karwomannghia · 30/08/2022 21:09

Don’t take it personally, they’re just busy. Hope you’re not waiting too long!

Oh bore off. It's impossible to see a GP at many practices. Even the emergency appointments are gone by 8:30 on a morning.

I've been trying to get an appointment for weeks now and the first one I could book is at the end of September.

Uti, constipation, appendicitis, whatever it is needs to be sorted ASAP.

You're in the right place @Offandonagain . Don't worry about being a time waster, you're not. If you'd pitched up with a broken nail or something that'd be different but abdominal pain should be checked out.

Offandonagain · 30/08/2022 20:46

I would have done but I’ve been in France. I tried to go to a french hospital a couple of days ago but struggled with the language barrier and me feeling quite vulnerable.

I have been on the ferry and train from dover all day today, then broke down in tears when I got here just out of relief.

I’m thinking of just leaving and going to gp in the morn

Please don’t leave OP. Your symptoms are classic of appendicitis which is horrendous and needs treating. Ignore any huffy looks and looking peeved. If you even suspect you have appendicitis you need urgent care. Worst case scenario you have an infection and are sent home with antibiotics.
I feel very sorry for you. It must be horrible trying to access emergency healthcare when you don’t speak the language or understand the system. Please keep us updated but stay where you are!

TwitchyJerk · 30/08/2022 21:12

I think triage are just tired and becoming dismissive.

In a&e a few weeks ago when I was triaged I could bearly talk with headache and nausea (was sent to a&e by gp as I deteriorated from being able to talk to him for telephone appointment and "come in this afternoon for me to examine you" And was vomiting "coffee grounds").

Triage asks me if I need any pain killers. I said no and without giving me a chance to explain I'd taken 60mg cocodamol 90 mins ago she said " oh good so you're not in too much pain then!" I managed to correct her.

Jules912 · 30/08/2022 21:12

My friend had really bad stomach pain, she thought it was just constipation until she collapsed and was rushed to hospital with a ruptured etopic pregnancy. You're in the right place.

iklboo · 30/08/2022 21:12

They are the classic symptoms for appendicitis - sounds exactly like mine. Stay put and ignore idiots saying you're a time waster with a 'tummy ache'.

figmaofmyimagination · 30/08/2022 21:13

Ex medic here saying I think you warrant seeing and should stay put.

onmywayamarillo · 30/08/2022 21:14

Friend had the dame recently turned out to be a kidney infection

So you stay put, as boring as it is you are in the right place

user1471556818 · 30/08/2022 21:15

Retired nurse 38 yrs including working in a.e
Don't leave stay and be seen ,including blood tests
Good luck and let us all know

HelloThereObiWan · 30/08/2022 21:15

Mumsnet is so weird sometimes. OP has appendicitis symptoms which would constitute a medical emergency. She's explained why she didn't seek help earlier and yet she's being accused of time wasting Hmm Bloody ridiculous!

OP, stay where you are. You need to be checked out properly to rule out appendicitis.

Lesina · 30/08/2022 21:15

Stay there and ask for a blood test, not urine blood. My daughter thought she had a UTI, actually was a severe kidney infection, with abcesses which needed drained and has caused long term damage.

Midpmcoffee · 30/08/2022 21:16

Have you had a bowel movement?

i would put money on trapped wind
