Unhappy with new Roman Blinds - thoughts..?

Bellysmackers · 29/08/2022 23:34

I had new roman blinds fitted today in my kitchen. I've had them previously in my last house and have always loved the look of them. After the fitters left I rolled them down. To me they don't look right (ie no visible pleating/folds you usually get with romans even when they are down)
It looks like a giant sheet hanging over my window, or as my husband put it "like a projector screen' 😟. I've attached a pic, but just wanted thoughts/advice. Would you be happy?
I'll probably call them tomorrow, but wondering if I'm being unreasonable and you think they look OK??? Ps sorry about the pile of dishes 🤣

We’re mid-reno, so excuse the unfinished windowsill and outside 😂
but you can see where the folds would be in our blinds, but that’s because they’re a fairly sheer fabric.

They look 👌 I think this is the vision I was expecting but I guess our fabric is much heavier so you don't see the seams. I get used to it hopefully. We've just finished our reno thank God! 🥴 Good luck with yours!

Why didnt you have them fitted in the recess? I personally think it would have looked so much better/neater when they are down.

Saz12 · 30/08/2022 10:08

Its how Roman blinds are supposed to look - I think once you’re used to them you’ll love them. Just now they’re not as you imagined hence you’re unsure.

I'm sorry, I know what you mean and it's such a large window, I'm guessing it's to do with the fabric you chose aswell. Any Roman blinds I have are almost curtain like in the fabric (also lighter in colour and patterned) so you can see the creases a little but only up close..
I also think they're being made much better now so hang without much creasing/folds been seen.
Is that a hessian fabric? Very light?

Floralnomad · 30/08/2022 10:14

It does look lovely when it’s up @Bellysmackers .

Wexone · 30/08/2022 10:15

Kitchen is fab however actually i don't get these blinds. My in laws has done up their house with lovely big windows out the back. They let in amazing light then they have spent a fortune putting these type pf blinds in and now the blinds block out half the light ?? The rooms are dark now. I am like what is the point then as the idea of was to allow lots of light with the windows ?? What blinds can you get that dont block the light ?

Seeingadistance · 30/08/2022 10:15

I think both kitchen and blind look lovely, OP.

Wearpantsffs · 30/08/2022 10:20

The only thing you could do is have them altered to fit into the recess and have an electric control. That would solve the problem and avoid them getting damaged from the sink but £££££.

OGLittlePickerWithTheMassiveKnickers · 30/08/2022 10:24

OP - my romans started that way but installer told me to leave them up as much as possible for first few months and the pleats do get more 'embedded'. I think yours look really good. I like the colour, probably just feels like a big change from what was there before.

Meraas · 30/08/2022 10:29

I bet it looks great when you've got them rolled up, even a third of halfway.

I would perhaps have had 3 smaller blinds rather than 1 big one, in the same colour.

I wanted a sack cloth/hessian colour. The colour is not in question, I'm asking if there should be pleats/folds when down. Having flowers all over it wouldn't make a difference would it really, but thanks for your help 🤣

I have made Roman blinds, I think it’s maybe how they’ve been constructed.

normally you make the blind and lining in one go (sort of like an inside out bag that you then turn right way out) and then sew on the casing for rods through both layers as top stitching. You then insert the rods into the casings. The cords then attach to the casing the rods sit in . This means from the front you see top stitch lines and a raised bump of rods/casing across the blinds at the regular spaces. They’ll be 2 rows of stitching show for each casing strip. When the blind is pulled up the rods are effectively being pulled up togther and the folds in the lining and front fabric occur neatly half way between each rod. On a new blind you can’t see folds when down, but over time you will gradually see creasing. However, most of the lines across you see are the sewn casing top stitch.

however, if they actually stitched the casing JUST to the lining, before it was attached to the front fabric hessian you are not going to see any of these typically stitch lines or rod bumps form the front- all you’ll see is a single flat piece of fabric.

without a close up it’s difficult to tell- but this could be why it seems just a piece of fabric as essentially that is what would happen.

it’s not saying putting in the rod casing into lining first is wrong- just not normal and in my personal opinion does not hang as well- the lining is in effect taking all the weight and creasing action for the flat front piece- it will never hang as neatly when up in terms of nest creases/folds on the front. Sort of like if you score a piece of card first then fold, you get a very sharp fold line, without scoring it’s never as neat.

send a detailed picture of front in place where rod casing is on the back and we can see more clearly how it’s constructed

The bay was way too deep

Ooh I'll keep them up and hopefully over time creases will bed in a bit 🤞🤞🤞

This window is at the front, we are a bungalow facing a road. If we didn't have this blind we would have a goldfish bowl effect! We have 6 meter full width bifolds at the other end of the room which you don't see in my picture hence plants of light

Look lovely up, really nice splash of colour and like PP have said, no need to have completely down anyway, they’ll look fine.

Ex professional maker of Roman blinds here.
Making the rod pockets by sewing channels in the lining then attaching lining to face fabric to avoid lines of machining across the face fabric is normal in bespoke blinds from an experienced seamstress. It involves a lot of hand sewing which is why a lot of "made to measure" companies will machine everything.
The only time I've been called back to "fix" a blind I've made has always been down to user error...

Oblomov22 · 30/08/2022 13:07

Lovely when up OP. Like I said I think they'll take some settling in. I'd put them up and down at different heights, 1/2 down, 3/4 down, many times per day, throughout the next week, and this'll help them settle.

BruceAndNosh · 30/08/2022 14:27

They look lovely up OP and the colour looks great with your island stools.
I'd never lower them all the way because of splashes but I'd put a few things on window sill to "block" the view in at night when it's most of the way down
