Unhappy with new Roman Blinds - thoughts..?

I had new roman blinds fitted today in my kitchen. I've had them previously in my last house and have always loved the look of them. After the fitters left I rolled them down. To me they don't look right (ie no visible pleating/folds you usually get with romans even when they are down)
It looks like a giant sheet hanging over my window, or as my husband put it "like a projector screen' 😟. I've attached a pic, but just wanted thoughts/advice. Would you be happy?
I'll probably call them tomorrow, but wondering if I'm being unreasonable and you think they look OK??? Ps sorry about the pile of dishes 🤣

Could you get some fabric paint and do some lino printing on it?

Flat when down and then you can choose your cascade when up.

Please don’t phone them and complain about them not being pleated when fully extended. You’ll honestly be the talk of the office.

Mumsnet is so helpful really! I won't phone them. Its obviously because they are large and in plain material. My bad. I'll just keep them up most of the time 😊

I keep my Roman blinds at half mast to get the pleated look.

Oblomov22 · 30/08/2022 08:50

I think it's too plain. But that's not their fault.
It's not hanging very well. But they may say it takes time to settle. You pull it up and down every day for a couple of weeks, it takes time to find its place.

What does it look like when pulled up, post a picture Please.

chillipenguin · 30/08/2022 08:51

I like your lights btw

Oblomov22 · 30/08/2022 08:52

Love your kitchen btw.

Oblomov22 · 30/08/2022 08:57

Show us a picture of them 1/2 up.

isthismylifenow · 30/08/2022 09:00

I had roman blinds in my kitchen, once.

They are awful to clean, and mine seemed to absorb the cooking smells.

So I would not release it all the way down, just for maintenance/cleaning purposes.

But yes, that is how they hang when released.

Littlemissprosecco · 30/08/2022 09:00

You could always add some edging fabric if it really feels too plain.
say each edge and one down the middle

disneylover367 · 30/08/2022 09:01

your kitchen is lovely and the blind goes well with the style, I think you need to not let them down all the way? So that way they will have a fold at the top? I think the plain slightly heavy fabric is just a stark contrast against white kitchen that you need to get used to a bit.

knittingaddict · 30/08/2022 09:07

I've made lots of window coverings.

Rowan blinds are flat when fully down. It would have looked better in the recess. You might have got away with the flat, dull colour if you hadn't put it on the outside of the window.

Don't complain. You've got what you ordered. The company should be able to alter them to fit, but at a cost. Cheaper than starting again though (I hope).

WaltzingWaters · 30/08/2022 09:09

They look how they’re supposed to when down. They have the pleats when up. Mine have horizontal seams along them when flat. mine are also fitted inside the window ledge rather than on the outer part which I think makes it look better. Can you get some privacy frosting on your window and keep them up? But yes, they look just as they should when down.

Soontobe60 · 30/08/2022 09:10

OP, make sure the blinds are up when you’re doing anything at the sink, otherwise you’ll get splashes all over them and they’ll soon look pretty awful. I know that because I’ve had plain blinds behind a sink in the past!

Looks better up I think

Much happier when they are up! Guess it's only at night they'll be down so I can live with that. I'll have to 🤣

I definitely will thanks! This was one of our concerns really, but having in the recess wasn't an option as its a deep bay so I couldn't reach the cord :-(

Ohhh, up they are lovely. Definitely just pull them part way down, leaving a gap at the bottom. That way you will avoid splashing and get a slight pleat.

Luckymummytoone · 30/08/2022 09:21

I love them up and down!! Kitchen envy 🥰

We’re mid-reno, so excuse the unfinished windowsill and outside 😂
but you can see where the folds would be in our blinds, but that’s because they’re a fairly sheer fabric.

They look good when up but yeah not the best when down tbh. But that's the hemp/hessian material and the fact they are over the top of the window rather than inside if that makes sense. If it's what you picked then not much you can say really.

WireSkills · 30/08/2022 09:45

I used to have almost an identical blind in my kitchen that I didn't like when it was down either. It lived most of its life in an "up" position, unless the weather was really, really cold or really, really hot!

P.S. Is that two dishwashers I spy?! Proper kitchen envy now...!

Garman · 30/08/2022 09:51

I love the blind and love your kitchen, but I don't understand what your issue is? How the blind have pleats when it's down? The pleats are there when it's pulled up out of the way because it's folded up, when it's down it's lying flat. How could it be pleated when it's down/laid out flat?
