Unhappy with new Roman Blinds - thoughts..?

Bellysmackers · 29/08/2022 23:34

I had new roman blinds fitted today in my kitchen. I've had them previously in my last house and have always loved the look of them. After the fitters left I rolled them down. To me they don't look right (ie no visible pleating/folds you usually get with romans even when they are down)
It looks like a giant sheet hanging over my window, or as my husband put it "like a projector screen' 😟. I've attached a pic, but just wanted thoughts/advice. Would you be happy?
I'll probably call them tomorrow, but wondering if I'm being unreasonable and you think they look OK??? Ps sorry about the pile of dishes 🤣

Looks like you have covered your windows with hessian or cardboard

doesnt look like a design flaw, just a colour issue

A standard Roman blind does not have pleats when it is down.
There may be crease marks from the folds but when down it is usually a flat panel of fabric

This. Your photo is exactly how it’s meant to look.

inchoff · 29/08/2022 23:55

do you reckon the thing looking off could be the spacing? There’s a narrow clearance between the corner wall and the blind. Maybe that’s why it looks like a “sheet”

anderosonnmj · 29/08/2022 23:55

That's how they're supposed to look, but I've only ever seen them used with a lightweight fabric so that you can see the sections.

And is that a single blind? Or two side-by-side? It just looks a bit bulky from the photo.

itsCORN · 29/08/2022 23:55

did you not…google released Roman blinds before ordering them or…

Tippexy · 29/08/2022 23:55

But they’re folded up?! 😂

BruceAndNosh · 29/08/2022 23:57

If a Roman blind is down during the day, the light filtering through it can show horizontal lines of shadow where the rods are across the back.
This effect is lost at night

Bellysmackers · 29/08/2022 23:42

I thought it would look more pleated like this

But this photo doesn’t show them closed 😂🤣

BruceAndNosh · 30/08/2022 00:01

Some people make roman blinds with lines of machine stitching across them for the rods. This can "break up" the expanse of flat fabric.
But a decent blind maker will make them with concealed rod pockets in the lining and no machine lines on the front

A ‘hobbled Roman Blind’ sounds like a description of a tortured early Christian martyr after a stint in the Colosseum!

the ones in the pictures are half up/down - of course they have pleats. They'd only have pleasts when they're fully down if you'd had them made too long.
I have seen cheap ones that have the rods sewn into a single piece of fabric - you cab see the horizontal seams of those when they're fully extended.

Oh dear, it does!

snowflake29 · 30/08/2022 00:09

Yeah as PPs have said already, they don't have pleats when they're fully down! Please don't complain to the company, they've done nothing wrong!

snowflake29 · 30/08/2022 00:11

It may have looked less sheet-like if you'd gone for recess fitting...

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 30/08/2022 00:15

Yes that is what they look like down. In your other picture they are up which is why they're ruched.

Agree that you could always get other hessian type accessories so it all matches. Like a teapot stand, placemats and such. You could probably get hessian art as well. Try car boot sales.

BruceAndNosh · 30/08/2022 00:16

Have you got any photos of previous house bkinds that you can show us?
I'm trying to think how to make your new blinds more acceptable to you.

I know you don't like people commenting on the colour and lack of pattern but unfortunately a large plain blind is always going to look like a sheet when completely extended. Your second photo obviously has pleats in because those blinds are not unfolded. I bet if you posted a photo of your blind in the up position it would look like that too. In your case, I would leave the blind partly up, maybe just above the level of the kitchen tap. Apart from anything else, in my house that plain blind would get dirty and splashed very quickly coming down right to the level of the sink/draining board

mamabear715 · 30/08/2022 00:23

Can we see a pic when open? I'm sure it looks great then. :-)

excitingusername · 30/08/2022 00:24

My daughter's looks like that but it is textured/patterned silver and on a plain wall so when it is down and one large block it looks more like a statement (it's not quite as wide). We love it. It looks beautiful and striking and lovely when half up. Just do it up slightly at the bottom rather than let it hang completely down.

They should have spoken to you about have the blind in the recess rather than over the top. I can't see that it's their fault if you've been there when they've measured up etc and approved it. If you don't like it you'll have to change it at cost to you.

abovedecknotbelow · 30/08/2022 00:25

You could have gone for recess fits. What's it like when you pull it up?

I do r like the colour but that's personal taste.

expat101 · 30/08/2022 00:27

I have roman blinds in my office and bedroom. As others have said, when fully down there are no pleats or folds.

the photo of the look you provided isn't showing those blinds as fully extended however if you wanted a pleated look, I would think the blind would have had to be made oversize to start with....?

I think you misjudged unfortunately. Do you have another window you can move this blind to, and start again? I went with a UPVC white wide blade blind at our kitchen window and I am very happy with it. Wipes down so easily too.

Reading with intrigue

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/08/2022 00:28

I think if it had been fitted into the window it might have looked less projector-screen like. I do understand what you mean, I'm sorry it's disappointing.

The ones I think of with visible pleats when down are called festoon blinds I think.

Well pull it half way up problem solved
