To think if I don't wear heels to an office job then what?!

Because flat "smart" shoes look so weird and crap on me.

But I can't wear heels as will have a lot of walking around campus.

It's been YEARS since I worked in a "smart" office.

What do you guys wear on your feet with skirts and dresses please?

Are sandals ok?

Private hospital office - a very posh one.

First day I'll do black trousers and black flat loafers. But the black loafers look so twattish with skirts and dresses.

I’ve found Fly shoes with chunky wedges really comfortable or some DM’s but I think Fly will be more suitable for a smart environment

NotMeNoNo · 27/08/2022 19:37

Try

Wedges
Block heels
Fly London type shoes
Knee or ankle boots
Low heel brogues/loafers
Lace up or strap shoes rather than pumps

Try different combinations of tights/skirt/trouser length to get the proportion right.

EllaBella41 · 27/08/2022 19:39

I've always worked in an office and I don't wear proper heels normally. I quite like boots to be honest, a bit of heel but not ridiculous - can run if you need to!

ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 27/08/2022 19:15

I wear these to work flat, don't lace up and the bottom are so soft you feel like you're walking on clouds.

Perfect summer flats IMO.

See we wouldn't be allowed to wear those, and not allowed sandals or open toes either!

These are my "flats" Clarks loafers, they're v bouncy and comfy

Ballet pumps with everything for me

bridgetreilly · 27/08/2022 19:52

Who cares whether your work shoes suit you? Wear something comfortable, which is going to mean flat shoes.

bellamountain · 27/08/2022 19:56

Chunky loafers are very in right now.

There are lots of different styles of flat shoes. They can't all look crap on you.

Believe me, they can, any type of smart flat shoe look hideous! I have hunted countless shoe shops and tried every different style going. Brogues, loafers, ballet pumps, flatforms, they just don't look good! Everyone thinks the same until I try countless different pairs with them all to come to the same conclusion!

DappledThings · 27/08/2022 20:04

I wear flat ankle boots in the winter, sandals or flat pumps in the summer. I very much doubt you look weird in flats. Nobody does. And I doubt anyone else cares at all what is on your feet.

Nothing wrong with sandals in the office.

PureBlackVoid · 27/08/2022 20:12

When I used to work in an office, I would go for ballet flats with those ankle straps. It just added a bit of something to usual boring pumps.

I don’t like chunky shoes at all, so most loafers and brogues are out for me but New Look used to do some suede ones that were much ‘slimmer’ than the usual style and really comfy.

Can you identify what the problem is? It does seem strange that nothing suits apart from high heels.

See now THESE would go great with lots of my dresses/skirts.

But I think it's been so long since I was in an office that I think they won't be acceptable.

I was hoping maybe totally white leather converse or similar might be ok.

And for sandals I have a couple of pairs of saltwater - was thinking specifically of these which I have in brown.

I go for brogues - I think they look fine with trousers, skirts and dresses. But then I’m not very fashionable….

Those are lovely.

CantFindTheBeat · 27/08/2022 20:31

God, it's the flippin holy grail, isn't it!

I've moved summer. I'm pretty senior in a semi-creative field so I've been able to wear reasonably fashionable trainers with a lot of my trouser/jacket combos.

Winter is harder.

I now go for arch support brands , like Vionics:

So much choice of flats especially right now.

Brogues, Chelsea boots, dealer/Derby boots, chunky loafers, penny loafers, driving shoes, Mary Janes, t-bar shoes, fisherman sandals, pointed flats, square toe flats, sling back flats, ankle strap flats, DMs, those that look like men's slippers, riding boots, clogs, absolutely loads.

Go for low block heel court shoes if you need something smarter, and aren't too concerned about fashion think of something the Queen would wear. I have some for court appearances, the rest of the time I go more casual.

Look at M&S or Clarks for a good range of smart flats.

notquiteruralbliss · 27/08/2022 20:38

I wear trainers

oviraptor21 · 27/08/2022 20:38

gatehouseoffleet · 27/08/2022 19:02

I really don't wear skirts and dresses, but on the rare occasion I do, I wear knee length boots. That only works in the winter of course.

In the summer I might wear flat sandals. They look frumpy but i don't care. But it is a reason I generally wear trousers because I just can't find shoes I like with skirts and I don't think ankle boots go with skirts or dresses unless they are very long.

This. Except I pretty much always wear skirts or dresses.
Winter - no problem - longish boots
Summer - no problem - Doc Marten style sandals
It's that inbetween period. I think some PP have it though - Doc Marten style shoes or very smart trainers could be the answer.

PS. Women don't have to be pretty - but it's nice to be comfortable and professional.

I care whether they suit me!

RaininSummer · 27/08/2022 20:43

Ballet flats are a good way to ruin your feet. They are responsible for many painful cases of plantar fascitis. I struggle with shoes so if it isn't sandals it has to be boots or trainers

Cyclebabble · 27/08/2022 20:53

For many years working in an office heals were sort of expected as part of smart dressing. In my experience this has changed over the last five years. My shoes are now smart but low with a very small heals. Most days we where smart. Some younger women wear trainers. Not for me, but I think this is fine. Higher heals have their place, bit for day long wear they were awful.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/08/2022 21:03

Surely a court shoe with just a low heel would be appropriate?
