To think if I don't wear heels to an office job then what?!

NewJobSoNewName · 27/08/2022 18:07

Because flat "smart" shoes look so weird and crap on me.

But I can't wear heels as will have a lot of walking around campus.

It's been YEARS since I worked in a "smart" office.

What do you guys wear on your feet with skirts and dresses please?

Are sandals ok?

Private hospital office - a very posh one.

First day I'll do black trousers and black flat loafers. But the black loafers look so twattish with skirts and dresses.

Have a look at Clarks. They do some chunky flats like these: www.clarks.co.uk/c/Orianna-Derby/p/26161402

Knee boots
ankle boots
Chunky flats
Ballet style flats
brogues
pointed flats

If all your skirts were bought for heels you may have to do some hem alterations on some and maybe buy a new skirt or pair of trousers, but you just need to adapt a bit,

Queenoftheashes · 27/08/2022 18:49

I wear white trainers in summer. Everyone gave up changing out of trainers. I do have some ballet pump style flats in the office. Black flat boots in winter.

Samanabanana · 27/08/2022 18:51

Smart trainers/loafers/brogues/ankle boots (flat or with a low heel). All look good with skirts and dresses and look more modern than ballet flats imho.

cardibach · 27/08/2022 18:54

Jesus. So much mind space. Wear trousers and DMs. Comfortable and practical. Why do women have to be ‘pretty’ all the time and worry about this shit? If you like skirts dresses -still wear DMs.

StrawberrySquash · 27/08/2022 18:55

Brogues. Although post covid no one cares, so mostly trainers.

I think you only think loafers and other flats don't work because you're not used to wearing/seeing/styling them.

I've never worn heels due to an ankle injury as a teenager, general style and working on construction sites. For smart office shoes, I wear brogues and loafers, with trousers and dresses. I've been back in the office a year now though, and have mostly worn trainers and more casual shoes.

It's a brave new world of flats!

No, I agree with OP, I'm following as I look dreadful on flats, tried countless pairs, different styles and colours, tried them on with various other people's opinions and we have all come to the same conclusion, they just do not suit me, I'm a heels girl through & through, or boots in the winter. So I am following with interest.

DragonsAndMoons · 27/08/2022 19:00

I wear my converses a lot 😂
Ballet shoes

Rarely rarely wear heals,

gatehouseoffleet · 27/08/2022 19:02

I really don't wear skirts and dresses, but on the rare occasion I do, I wear knee length boots. That only works in the winter of course.

In the summer I might wear flat sandals. They look frumpy but i don't care. But it is a reason I generally wear trousers because I just can't find shoes I like with skirts and I don't think ankle boots go with skirts or dresses unless they are very long.

MarshaMelrose · 27/08/2022 19:02

Loafers. I've got some in white and and in olive green. They go with everything.

TheKeatingFive · 27/08/2022 19:02

There are lots of different styles of flat shoes. They can't all look crap on you.

Stinkbag · 27/08/2022 19:03

Brightly coloured brogues!

AdriannaP · 27/08/2022 19:05

No to sandals.

I've got into Deck Shoes this year - I think they look fine with everything - with skirts, dresses, cropped trousers etc. www.marksandspencer.com/wide-fit-leather-bow-boat-shoes/p/clp60543496 and I have a tan pair similar from somewhere else.

Exactly! No-one "looks dreadful in flats".

This ^^

And why on earth would you 'never wear sandals in a professional environment'?

Bonkers. Thank goodness the women I work with all look smart and comfortable and don't worry about this shit.

MarshaMelrose · 27/08/2022 19:15

When you say campus, are you talking college or university campus? I've worked in both and nobody cared what you wore on your feet. I wore sandals regularly. (Not flip flops) I don't understand what MN has against sandals at work unless for H&S reasons.

BaileySharp · 27/08/2022 19:15

With a dress I usually wear some ankle boots with a low heel. When I wear trousers I wear some flat shoes (a bit like school shoes tbh)

ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 27/08/2022 19:15

I wear these to work flat, don't lace up and the bottom are so soft you feel like you're walking on clouds.

Perfect summer flats IMO.

To think if I don't wear heels to an office job then what?!
ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 27/08/2022 19:16

I wear a smart dress with them and it makes it all look smart enough.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 27/08/2022 19:17

I wear trainers, sandals, pumps (not ballet flats) or boots

NoseyNellie · 27/08/2022 19:17

Can you do a low heel? If so a chunky wedge is comfy:

www.beggshoes.com/fly-london-biso-wedge-blu-P501305-red-leather

or I vote ankle boots

TheWayoftheLeaf · 27/08/2022 19:17

Try M&S for leather pumps they do some decent ones

thinkover · 27/08/2022 19:18

Very surprised at the amount of people saying ballet flats?! I’m mid 30s and thought ballet flats had died a fashion death a good 15 years ago.

RewildingAmbridge · 27/08/2022 19:24

I don't remember the last time I saw someone at work in heels.
Loafers, brogues, sandals (more leather with a reasonable amount of foot coverage than flip flops), Chelsea boots, biker boots (I love my rocket dog biker boots with black tights and a dress). We do all keep a pair of full coverage shoes in the office because some of the sex offenders have a thing about feet. Think teacher/social worker and that's the dress code for my office unless we're in court when we all bring out the obligatory suit 🙄
