Previous occupant of my house

I have NC for this as don't want it linking to previous posts I have made.

I have just returned home and found a note from someone who says they used to live in my house. They are asking if I would allow them to show the house to their daughter who was born here. They are staying nearby for the next few days. They have given the years when they say they lived here which mean nothing to me. I know how long the previous couple owned the house but not whether they lived here the whole time or rented the property out. My initial reaction was to ignore the note as I thought it was probably a scam of some sort. I then thought even if they are genuine and staying locally, I don’t want them in my house. There was a mobile number at the top of the note which I tried ringing to say nope not convenient, but the phone is turned off with no facility to leave a message.

I know IANBU to not want random people wandering around my house but is this a scam I haven’t come across before now? I don’t want to spend the next few days on tenterhooks every time someone knocks at the door and nervous of opening it.

I think you have to judge each of these things separately.

I had the most amazing latter from a lady who had lived in our house after the war, with photos! they were incredible and the letter made me very emotional - she said she had gone past and seen that a family were living there and it looked well looked after; I woul dhav eloved to show her round and hear her stories - but she hadn't left an address or anything. I actuall looked them up in the local electorsal role and she had a very comon surname so no way to look her up. The pictures told a great story of her as a young girl playing in the garden.

I alos had contact from the descendent of hte person who built the house - who now lives in the US. He sent me pictures of the man and woman who built the house! (1860s) - I sent him photots of the house and told him all about the area. I would have welcomed him adn enjoyed showing him the area if he had ever been in the area.

Btoh times it coudn't have been a scam due to teh info given - and very fascinating, but a cold call woudn't be so welcome

I can’t believe you reported them to the police!

Ignoring the note could be reasonable - but you’ve totally overreacted.

Given they’ve lied about the years they lived in the house, I think an online report to the police isn’t an overreaction. Maybe it will help the police with others being scammed.

It’s not like OP called 999 Hmm

We had this happen to us one dark Sunday night at about 8.30pm several years ago. Random woman knocked on the front door of our cottage asking to see what, she said, was her grandfather’s house. Before I had a chance to object my DH had let her in. I think that she was genuine as she knew the weird layout of the place but I did think that it was all a bit odd.

If this happened to me and like you I had decided that I didn’t want them coming in the house I’d just tear it up and forget about it. Not start a MN thread.

The police have enough to do without pointless reports

I reckon the police hate mumsnet

The amount times I see posters suggesting an OP go to the police about something quite mind boggling trivial.
