Friends a thief ...aibu to be disgusted?

neepop · 27/08/2022 14:53

Friend rang me this morning all bright and cheerful.
Told me she placed a order with a online retailer (huge company )
They delivered her order late after paying for next day.
The box arrived all damaged but luckily everything was there.
She contacted customer services and said one item (£20 make up item ) was missing (it wasn't)
So they've refunded her
Aibu to be a bit disgusted ?
Her response was "I'm struggling with money at the minute "

You feel how you feel, so yanbu. But I think things are really hard for people atm, and what's she's done is so small compared to how disgusting our government are behaving. If you want to look at who the actual crooks are, I'd look there.

Maybe think about what about it makes you feel so disgusted? That's a very strong word for a v minor thing

Because it is morally wrong. End of.

Ottersmith · 27/08/2022 18:34

Why are you all up in arms about someone stealing an item from Jeff Bezos who is a sociopath billionaire who doesn't pay tax and exploits his workers. If you buy from Amazon you are directly contributing to the miserable conditions of those workers so you can all get off your high horse. Hope your disdain keeps you warm this Winter.

Pottedpalm · 27/08/2022 18:58

Keyansier · 27/08/2022 16:22

It wouldn't be an issue to me tbh. I have done similar also. I don't see it as stealing if you present an opportunity and the company agrees to it - they don't have to say "yes" to a refund just because you ask. But if they do, then they agree to it.

What sort of f*ed up logic is this?

BaileySharp · 27/08/2022 19:04

I wouldn't be impressed but I doubt I'd end the friendship over it.

EveningOverRooftops · 27/08/2022 19:22

if she’s short of money why is she buying make up?

Not necessarily from Bezos tho is it. Most of the stuff on Amazon is independent sellers who use Amazon as a “marketplace”, Bezos does the fulfilment (web platform, warehousing, delivery) and takes a cut.

BreakerOfBras · 27/08/2022 19:30

It's scabby behaviour and I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who did that. How could I trust them around my belongings if that's their level of moral values?

Mountainpika · 27/08/2022 19:36

Theft is theft and theft is wrong. No ifs nor buts. Why should I pay more for items in a supermarked because of other people's dishonesty?
Recently I ordered a book - it arrived. A few weeks later another copy arrived. I contacted the seller who said to keep it with their compliments. That was fair enough.

Firty · 27/08/2022 19:39

Yanbu.

If she’s struggling for money she shouldn’t buy £20 make up items.

When people steal from a shop, the shop averages out the lost profit and puts up prices for everyone. She isn’t stealing from
the CEO, she’s stealing from all of us.

Pathetic.

Bb16103 · 27/08/2022 19:47

A few years back I ordered some bits for people for Christmas from Debenhams & in the box was an urban decay naked 2 pallette, it was worth about £40! And it definitely wasn’t mine! I called them twice & emailed to find out how to send it back & they eventually told me to keep it (I know it sounds stupid but it wasn’t on the order sheet so I couldn’t tick that & send it back, I couldn’t tick another item & send it back in case they refunded me by mistake).
Even though they said I could keep it & initially I was thrilled because I really wanted one & really couldn’t afford it, I always felt a bit grubby & cheeky when I used it, thinking of someone out there who probably had to wait a week with the money taken out of their account to get the replacement. Always amazed by these CF stories. Always worry a bit that the packer at the depot could be told off for something they haven’t done

🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤦🏻‍♀️

Save your anger for the real criminals.

The Tory govt. and their cronies milking every govt. contract they can get their greedy mits on whilst paying as little tax as possible.

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 20:03

Behaviour like your friends just pushes up the prices for everybody.

pigsDOfly · 27/08/2022 20:03

It's the same mindset as people who claim more on insurance than they've actually lost; also theft.

And in the same way, everyone else is paying for their theft; in the case of insurance we pay with higher premiums and in the case of retail we pay more for our goods.

Very nice for the thieves, not so great for the honest ones amongst us.

There was a thread a while ago on here that I clicked on about ‘thrifty tips.’ Well, four kids, the economy, I’m always looking for thrifty tips! One of them was ‘use the self scanners and choose less than you have/click on bread rolls when you’re really buying expensive cakes.’ Erm, no, that’s not thrifty - it’s stealing!

That https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-55089146 went well for this police officer!

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 20:04

PS Can't be struggling for cash if she spends £20 on one makeup item.

If you think that this is coming out of Bezos' pocket, then you are very naïve.

This is fraud, and it's honest customers who end up paying.

GroggyLegs · 27/08/2022 22:50

boomoohoo · 27/08/2022 15:10

@GroggyLegs I don't know what a grifter is!

Do people have to have starving children before deemed acceptable to steal food? Not in my opinion.

I'm not saying it's OK and everyone should do it - but I don't think it's a big deal. You know how much profit Company's make? The mark up they put on, whilst paying staff minimum wage with poor working conditions. That I get disgusted about

grifter
/ˈɡrɪftə/
nounINFORMAL•NORTH AMERICAN
a person who engages in petty or small-scale swindling.

There you go.

Cas112 · 27/08/2022 22:52

I think your a bit OTT being disgusted. If my friend told me they did that I probably wouldn't think about it again but I just wouldn't ever do it myself.

Get over it

KittyKel · 27/08/2022 22:58

to all the posters saying it doesn’t matter, big companies make disgusting profits, think of all the retailers that went bust in the last recession and Covid, and all the shops that shut and thousands of jobs lost…the shareholders might not lose out but plenty of their workers did. Theft is theft, end of.

InWalksBarberalla · 27/08/2022 23:00

YANBU, I'd be pretty disgusted to discover a friend was a liar and a thief.

Hannakl · 27/08/2022 23:08

It is stealing. Blaming Jeff Bezos or the government doesn’t change the fact. Surely if you are so outraged by them, you shouldn’t lower yourself to their level.

Nancydrawn · 27/08/2022 23:15

It's not just taking advantage of a company's mistake, as when Amazon sends two of an item rather than one. I believe one should tell them, but the mistake is theirs, and the action one has to take is to correct the mistake.

Instead, she's actively lying in order to get more money. She has gone out of her way to lie in order to steal.

I think it's gross.

There seems to be a lot of people parroting this recently. But it’s lying at best and fraud at worst, as you are defrauding the company of items that you haven’t paid for. It’s like the person on MN recently who said they thought it was okay for people struggling with the current cost of living to shoplift from big supermarket chains. What is wrong with people??

Sugarplumfairy65 · 27/08/2022 23:29

tiggergoesbounce · 27/08/2022 15:39

There is a part of me who thinks it would depend on the company to how "disgusted" i was.

If its amazon or the likes, treat employees like shit whilst not paying proper tax...meh !! Just taking some tax off them. If its a decent tax paying, nice local company i would probably think its a bit off.

But im not sure where my logic stops, obviously legally its theft, but morally i appear to have factors that let them off BlushBlush

I have a small business, I sell on Amazon Handmade, You would not believe how many people try to claim that something hasn't been delivered or arrived damaged. Its getting to the stage where I'm going to have to stop selling through them, it just isn't worth it. Strangely though, I never get the same problem with my own website and Etsy orders. I usually employ a couple of students during the holidays but the theft by amazon customers has meant I could only employ one this summer and I'm not paying myself the wage that i usually would.
When customers pull this kind of stunt, it's the small businesses who lose out. Amazon don't lose anything.
